Ministry Gala Event!
Characters: OPEN TO ALL. Please tag with your own character(s) when you comment/they arrive.
Setting: The Ministry Atrium, Level 8, beginning at 7 PM and running until midnight
Summary: It's the Halloween ministry gala/party! Come in costume (muggle or otherwise), in elegant wear, or in dress robes. The event begins at 7PM with refreshments, appetizers, finger foods and cocktails. Desserts are served later in the evening, but the cocktails remain available all night long. There is no full dinner, as it would be quite unwieldy with the amount of people expected to attend. The dance floor is open, a live band is playing, and the atmosphere is almost aggressively pleasant. For safety reasons, wands are being checked (surrendered) at the entrances. Unless your character is on-duty at the party, he or she will not have her wand on his/her person after entering.
Rating: Let's go with R for now, as there will be some dark occurrences later in the evening. We will update as necessary.

The event coordinators at the Ministry of Magic were in fine form in the hours leading up to the start of the gala. Everything had to be perfect, and not just in appearances. The atrium had been decorated in gold and silver, slightly reflective, to capture light and brighten the large, spacious room. The band was in place by 6:30, playing quiet music that set the mood. Off to either side, slightly out of the way, were two cocktail tables, fully stocked. There was also a number of wait staff who would be walking around with trays of red or white wine as well as champagne.

The attention to the decor was due to the head events coordinator, one Ismay Plimpton, who was an absolute perfectionist. With attention down to the very last detail, she was very nearly driving the Minister mad with her questions and comments, not to mention crucial changes. Her voice and general looks had Kingsley Shacklebolt nearly thinking her related to Delores Umbridge, if Ismay weren't so remarkably pleasant and likable.

With his assurance that everything was just fine, Ismay hurried off, gently but firmly reprimanding some poor chap setting candles afloat too low for her liking. The ceiling above twinkled like night stars, and between that, the candles, and the reflective decorations, the room was perfectly lit.

Everything was ready. All they needed now were the guests.

Alicia made her way into the Atrium, thankful she'd decided to wear something warmer as she was pants at warming charms. She adjusted her bow tie and smiled at the people she passed on her way to the drinks table.

She immediately grabbed a glass of wine, intent on enjoying herself tonight despite the strangeness of the last couple of nights. She was never one to let such things get her down, no matter how they shook her - though perhaps it was owed more to her capabilities of denial than anything else.

Hermione had not planned on coming to the gala. However in light of recent events and Harry's concern, she couldn't keep herself away. Hermione had come to learn that observing and interacting with others could often give as much insight into a situation as any academic text.

Dressed in one of the gowns she had offered to Luna Hermione entered the Ministry and after surrendering her wand she made her way to the primary gathering point for the Ministry's guests. Turning, she took a glass of wine from nearby tray and noticed that another hand took a glass at the same time.

"Alicia, how are you this evening," she greeted her former housemate.

Alicia smiled at the younger woman and took a moment to take in her gown.

"Hermione, you're looking so posh tonight," she said as she settled her wine glass in her hand. "I'm good. Will be better with a little more sleep, but I couldn't let the party go by without coming for a little fun."

She playfully spread her arms wide. "So, what do you think - could I pass for a bloke?"

Hermione took a sip of the wine and sincerely hoped that someone was closely monitoring the food and drink for the evening. She listened to Alicia's words and made a mental note to add Alicia to the ever growing list of individuals with a second rough night.

"I am hoping this evening turns out to be productive in many ways. Hopefully, tonight will pass without event and we will all get some much needed sleep."

She watched when Alicia displayed her outfit for the evening. "Maybe if you get rid of the ponytail."

Alicia gave Hermione a mock glare. "The only event we'll have tonight is the inevitable dirty dancing that will come from a few drinks too many. You need to relax, luv, and try and enjoy yourself."

She gasped in horror, her hand instinctively reaching for her hair. "Not my hair! I'll just be one of those hot blokes who like to war their hair long, that's all."

She took a sip of her drink. "So how've you been of late?"

"I'll leave the dirty dancing to you," Hermione smiled. She didn't mind enjoying a good dance or two, but she couldn't imagine herself acting anything less than a lady out in public.

"Don't those blokes usually wear it down?" she inquired. She remembered her mother's infatuation with some Italian guy named Fabio and the pictures of some of the men on various romance novels. She had to admit, that there were some men who could pull the look off.

"Work is keeping me busy," she took another sip from her glass. "Been doing some recreational reading as well." Merlin, did she need to get a life.

Alicia nodded, unsurprised that Hermione would be taken up with work. "You'd be proud of me - half the time I'm reading up on shiatsu or reflexology techniques. I save my recreational reading for the occasional Jasmine King novel - and the quidditch scores, of course."

She sipped from her wine, watching some of the witches and wizards pass by in their costumes. "Oh, look at that! I think someone showed up as a peacock, or something."

"I've not read any of her novels," Hermione conceded. Her idea of recreational reading was more along the lines of what many would consider boring. In all honesty she found romance novels to be rather a waste of time.

Hermione's eyes followed Alicia's and she just shook her head. "I never did like the whole idea of dressing up as something your not." Hermione much preferred the formality with which the wizarding world approached the holiday rather than the frivolous nature Muggles took with the day.

"You should," Alicia recommended. "Even the smartest girl in the room can use a little romance, don't you think? The books are much better than most blokes are, that's for sure."

She looked curiously at Hermione, the attitude so different from her own. "Funny, I've always felt it sort of liberating to put on a disguise," she admitted. "You can do what you really want without worrying what people will think of you." She shrugged, then gasped in shock as she saw a familiar head of red hair.

"Oh my... is that Percy Weasley?" Her eyes went wide at the sparkling stars on the dark blue velour background. "Didn't Dumbledore wear something like that once?"

Romance was not something Hermione was used to. The most romantic moment in her life to this point had been when the deluminator brought Ron back to her. Of course, she had been so irked at him that she hadn't noticed the sweetness of the moment until much later. "Perhaps I will pick one up some time." Yes, she could strike it as an academic comparison with a real relationship.

Hermione was about to point out the flaw in Alicia's liberating opinion of masks. Death Eaters had worn masks so they could do exactly that, whatever they wanted without fear of reprimand. Instead her attention was pulled to yet another individual. "I do believe that is Percy," she nodded. Hermione hadn't spent much time with the middle Weasley boy, mostly because Ron and the twins had spent so much time focusing on what an annoying prat they found him to be. Not wanting to argue, she had never spoken to the contray even though she found his adherence to the rules very respectable.

Alicia smiled - getting Hermione to even consider buying a romance novel was a huge victory in her eyes.

"You know, he's not such a bad looking bloke," Ally said with a tilt to her head, "though a little on the arrogant side for me. What do you think?" she prodded with a playful elbow to Hermione's side. "You've got a thing for gingers."

The look on Hermione's face had to have been priceless. She had never thought of Percy Weasley in that way. Besides, if she had eyes for a Weasley it would be Ron. Right now, she didn't have time to have eyes for anyone.

"I suppose," she stated quite frankly not wanting to get into this conversation.
