Characters: Percy Weasley and Theodore Nott
Setting: Ministry of Magic; soon after an owl.
Rating: Worksafe
Summary: Percy has a problem, Theodore has a solution. Whether the solution is "real" is a matter of how one defines "real." Yes, I totally did get postmodern on you.

After walking through the guest entrance and checking in with the guard as outlined in the return owl Theodore headed towards Percy Weasley's office at the Ministry of Magic. He took care to remove the Sneakoscope from his own briefcase in case someone would manage to put one and one together. The assessments had turned up negative, and Theodore's own sense on the matter had determined that there weren't any curses on Percy. That determination wasn't really helpful for himself though as he had found that the nightmares were having their toll on him. And then there was the day after the Chambers' party--he was fairly sure that he hadn't had too much to drink as he wasn't by habit a heavy drinker but it felt like a hangover and his body reacted accordingly.

Those sorts of excuses weren't things that worked for one whose livelihood depended on contract after contract. He needed to work well at least some of the time. And that seemed less and less possible under the circumstances. He needed to figure out what to do about the 'nightmares', but found himself stuck as he continued to feel unwell.

However if he were to put on a good show he may be able to turn over a large profit this time around, he figured. The man had previously appeared to be quite convinced of the presence of a curse, and was determined to have it removed. And Theodore had found just the obscure curse that was called for in such a situation, and had figured out what he'd do to remove it and be convincing in such an enactment. He was actually rather talented in non-verbal magic, which did help.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Weasley," he said as he briskly walked into Percy's office after being let in by an assistant. "I'm glad that you are available at this point. As you may have already known and realized, this is a rather serious matter." He paused for effect and to observe the sort of reaction he'd get from Senior Undersecretary.

The words urgent nature brought anxious snitches flying about in Percy's stomach. Some of his worst fears were being realized, and he was doing his best to remain outwardly calm and collected.

"One doesn't enter the political arena without expecting to make enemies of some sort," he blustered, though realistically he figured he hadn't been the main target. That would have been the people around him, such as his family and Mr. Crouch and the Ministers he had worked for.

"What is the treatment?" he finally asked.

Theodore watched Percy carefully, trying to ascertain the level of fear he was projecting. Of course the Senior Undersecretary would have to be quite skilled at keeping a lid on his emotions at times, but Theodore would like to think that he was at least somewhat skilled at reading people.

"Well you and those around you are quite fortunate in the whole matter that there is an actual treatment for this curse. However, it isn't by any means easy nor is it without significant risk to both you and the Curse Breaker who would be carrying out the treatment--which I assume would be myself." Theodore was quite aware of Percy's brother being a Curse Breaker, it was a small enough profession. This was why he went to the trouble of finding a legitimate and obscure curse that would match Percy's perceptions instead of trying to make something up. "The odd thing about this curse is that it does not pose any significant risk to those who actually bear the curse. So the alternative is that you continue to live with the curse and it continues and accelerates."

"To treat it I would have to do is to magically detect and sever ties of misfortune that link you to others. It would take no less than a couple of hours of meticulous spellwork, of course with regular breaks as one little mistake can have severe consequences."

Percy quickly shook his head. "The alternative is unacceptable. If this is what it shall take, then I will do it. Is there a particular day or time it must be done?"

He knew there were some potions that required being combined on a Saturday or at midnight, thus it was only natural that breaking a curse might have similar timing needs.

"No, which is quite fortunate as one would never know when it would strike next. I would suggest that the sooner the better."

There was nothing like having things done and out of the way as soon as possible, in any case. And it left Percy with less time to inquire around--if he would. Theodore was curious as to why Percy wasn't enlisting the assistance of his brother. Or at the very least didn't have his brother around. Maybe he was in Egypt or something?

Percy nodded. He had been afraid that the curse would strike again soon, though he had no real reason to think so. It had been one of the reasons he had not gone to see Bill - he was afraid his brother would think him paranoid and acting overly emotionally after Penny's death, and wouldn't take him seriously.

"When and where do you need me? I had planned on being somewhere tomorrow morning, but it can be rescheduled as need be." After all, the person he was going to see wouldn't mind - she was dead and freshly buried, after all, and even in life had gotten far too used to him rescheduling on her.

"A few hours in the afternoon should work the best," Theodore replied. If he were going to fake it, he'd rather fake it well. If the past was any indication of what would happen tomorrow, he was quite aware that he'd experience the nightmares once more. And it would take him some time for him to appear and act normal once more.

"It probably be best that you meet me at my office--the Floo is to Mynydd House, Bristol. It has all that is needed and is isolated enough should anything really go wrong."

"That would be fine," he replied, already planning on calling in sick the next day. Nightmare tonight, Penny's grave tomorrow morning... it really wasn't worth coming in to work at all, was it.

He picked up a quill and wrote down the instructions as given. "Is there anything you need me to bring? A token of some kind? Something belonging to one of those who has died? Something belonging to myself? I wish I knew who had put this curse on me."

"Good. I'll see you at 2:00pm, then?" Theodore took out his planner and a quill to block off the time.

"A token of someone who had died would be beneficial, but not necessary. It would've been helpful to have had something from the person who has performed the curse, but that's also not necessary. They make things easier to detect, but if you don't have those items, it's still possible to detect and remove the curses."

Percy nodded. "I will gather the appropriate items and meet you at your office tomorrow, then. 2 o'clock sharp."

He stood up from his desk and extended his hand out. "I would like to thank you again for your prompt attention. I cannot express what it means to me to know this curse will soon be no more."

Theodore shook Percy's hand. "Again, it is my honour and professional duty to act promptly in the case of emergencies such as this." He put his planner away and closed his briefcase with a light click.

"See you then," he said, before moving to leave the Senior Undersecretary's office.
