Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 17 2003, character: marietta edgecombe, character: zacharias smith

Characters: Zacharias & Marietta
Setting: Marietta's flat, right before this
Rating: PGish
Summary: Zacharias wants to be annoying, and also maybe talk about babies - or just one baby.

Yesterday he had attempted to be a polite human being and when they backfired, he decided that it was not worth the work. And really, when dealing with Marietta it was best to simply give as good as he got. That was the basis of their relationship and up until this point he would call it a good one. Now, it was just all sorts of complicated and Zacharias couldn't help but feel she was intentionally making this worse for him.

A part of him had really wanted to make her go through with the pregnancy, give birth, and then eat the child or something equally twisted and horrendous. The problem with that line of thought was that in carrying into the hypothetical, he couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to have something that would call him father. It was the sort of thought that made him sick, but then there was how pissed off Elaina would be to have some not-quite pureblood Smith running around. Really, he could create some sort of little monster who would descend upon the wizarding world in a few years time and there was something appealing about that. Appealing in a way that also made him a bit sick.

Honestly, he wasn't sure what he was doing or even going to say as he threw a handful of floo powder into the fireplace to take him to Marietta's flat. Having to knock at her door was simply not an option because she wouldn't let him in. This way he would already be inside and she would have to look at him when they talked. And just to be sure that this conversation started off on the wrong foot, he called out, "Honey, I'm home," as he stepped out of her fireplace.

Marietta gave him a sour look. "Oh please, I don't think you've ever stopped by for anything that even remotely resembles an emergency." He usually came when he was weirdly sober and being a huge prat and utterly obnoxious besides.

She was about to answer and say that yes, she was trying to push him out because he was not welcome just then, but he mentioned being the father of the child as if that gave him some sort of power and she very well could not let that sit without commenting. "You have got to be kidding. You honestly think that it's going to be your business who I shag now because we've got a child together? You are sorely mistaken, Zacharias Smith. It's none of your bloody business what I do, just like I don't give a shite what you do. My getting pregnant wasn't something I wanted and it doesn't bond us in anyway other than the child. Don't even try to make it anything else." It was a bit sad, actually, that ever since this whole thing had started she hadn't really had a normal conversation with him. Not that they were ever really normal together, but she did sort of miss the way they used to be.

She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him. "What do you want, Zacharias? I have an engagement and I really don't need this right now."

It was pure reflex and maybe just a little bit of spite that the following words came. "I want you to keep it." Once the words were said, he wasn't going to go back on it, but he didn't want to give her the space to say anything either. That meant the only option was to keep talking.

"Which means that now it is my business, because that thing in what passes for a womb is a Smith or at least it has the potential to be one - whether or not that actually happens still remains to be seen." On some level, he know that it was rather messed up to punish someone by forcing them to carry a child, but right now that didn't matter so much. Logic and reason didn't have much of a hold. And yes, he didn't want the child either, but he figured he could make it worse for her because no one liked stretched marks. "So until that decision is made as you've given up your decision in the matter the other day at the healer, I get to know what is happening in your life because what you do effects the child."

Her eyes went wide at that, of course, but she really had not expected him to pick that option. Why would he want to keep it? What the hell was wrong with him? "Why? Why do you want to keep it?" She may have said that it was up to the father's family but she certainly wasn't going to keep her mouth shut and not question it.

She shook her head vigorously, moving into his space to argue. She was not going to take this lying down - for lack fo better phrasing. Marietta had a sinking feeling that he was trying to make her keep the 'baby' just as an excuse to lord over her in some way and she wasn't not going to agree to those terms in any manner whatsoever. "Oh no, sir, it does not work like that. If you aren't going to be telling me what you are up to then I'm not going to be telling you anything. I already take perfect care of my body so there is absolutely no other reason for you to need to know anything about my life if it has nothing to do with this child. You can take that idea and shove it right up your arse!" she said, pointing a finger in the air for emphasis.

Zacharias crossed his arms over his chest, silently amused at her outrage, but otherwise unmoving even as she crowded into his space. "I don't need to explain my reasoning to you." He didn't think so - not when he still somewhat believed that foul play on her part was somehow involved.

"And it does work like that. In fact it works exactly like that. Consider this the better alternative to sending you away for the next nine months so you can have the child outside of the public eye." That sort of thing wasn't unheard of, and while he wouldn't actually consider it himself, it didn't mean that it wasn't a possibility.

"Could you be any more childish?" she asked, rolling her eyes. Really, this was ridiculous. She glanced at the clock on the wall and realised that she had to get him out of there and quickly which meant that she was going to have to stop arguing with him. It was unfortunate, because Marietta had plenty more she wanted to say to him.

Glaring, she backed away from him again. "You know what? Fine. Absolutely great! I can't wait to get started with you attempting to invade my privacy without having any need to except that you are a nosey arse. And now that we have established that, you're welcome to leave." She gestured toward the fireplace showing him where he could go.

Zacharias looked at her, surprised she was giving in that easily. Even if it could be counted as a win this time around, he knew that it was honest. Marietta wasn't losing, she was conceding for the moment. And that only made him even more interested in just what she was doing. "Why wait? Let's start now."

He was after all, as she put it, a nosey arse. Zacharias never did manage to stop asking why even when it was best that he should. "So, I think that I am going to stay, see what you have that's so important you need me gone."

Marietta heard a thump come from the cupboard across the room and knew that was the cue to get Zacharias out of there. Granger was stirring and if she was going to be making noise it was only a matter of time before Pandora showed up to get her so Marietta had to get this prat out of the flat and fast.

She laughed - attempting to cover up the noise but it was already too late for that - and shook her head. "No, I think not. I'm sure you've other offers and I, unfortunately, cannot deal with you right now." Marietta discretely tucked her hands behind her back and reached into the bag of Floo powder, readying herself.

Zacharias paused hearing the noise from the cupboard. His eyes went right toward it. All he could think about was catching Marietta about unleash on Roger not that long ago. Shaking his head. "I hope you asked for a safe word!" He shouted loud enough to carry across the room.

He was sure there was more, even the intent to walk across the room and see just who the poor sucker was. While other thoughts wondered why they couldn't play like that too. However, he would never get the chance.

She wanted to laugh at that because if he knew who it was and what was going to happen to her, then he'd know that a safe word wouldn't do her any good. Also, at least she had made good on her statement of going after Granger. She may not have got him to do it but he was a prat anyhow.

"Goodbye, Zacharias. Have a nice evening with your mother," Marietta pulled out her wand and cast a curse to blow him back into the fireplace, tossing the Floo powder in simultaneously. She called out "Smith Estate" and shut down her Floo connection once he had gone through it. Now it was time to go get Granger ready.
