Characters: Theodore Nott and Tracey Davis
Setting: Mynydd House, Study; 07:00, November 16, 2003
Rating: Worksafe
Summary: What happens when you have what feels like a hangover followed by a bad night...

Theodore groaned as he rolled out of bed, his heart beating quickly in his chest, cold sweat covering him. He didn't want to remain in bed when there was a chance that he'd have the nightmare once more. If it did happen like that. He typically never gave it a chance to do so as he would often just get out of bed, more often then not feel sick and/or vomit at the mere memory of what he had dreamt of, and walk outside until he felt somewhat human once more.

What he needed to do was to get some work done though, and that wouldn't happen if he remained in bed. No, it certainly won't do. He has taken to assessing himself, as if he had a curse, just to see what would come up. He hadn't been able to figure out what it could be, or what perspective to tackle this problem at as he had felt foggy for the past couple of weeks.

What he did know was that his current contract, Mr. Weasley most certainly didn't have a curse. But at the same time, he knew that he needed more time to recover from his own curse and to ensure that Tracey would be alright for the next little while...a bit of money should buy him some more time. Theodore had a plan though. It wasn't completely below him to take what would be nothing to someone else, after all.

He sat at his desk at the study, head cradled in his hands, a book open to a particularly obscure and ominous curse on his desk. He'll contact him tomorrow, when he wasn't so affected by dreams...he needed to ensure that his owl was carefully worded with the right sense of urgency.

Tracey had been trying to move back into her flat for the last few days. She'd been getting better at it, trying to appear like everything was normal. She had gone back to work and everything, and she's even stayed the night in her own bed for a night. Then she'd have her own nightmares. Not like the ones everyone else was having, but a 'normal' one, reminding her what happened with that strange woman. What happened to John...

She's started taking some sleeping droughts (not that she'd told Theodore that) to help her relax at least. Last night had been one of those nights where she'd had to go come back to Mynydd House. She would have loved to sleep in, but she was actually going to go to work that morning.

She'd been up in the kitchen making tea, when she heard Theodore stirring, and carrying a mug of tea for him, and went to check on him in his study. "Want some tea?" she asked, peeking in the doorway.

Theodore startled at Tracey's request, his eyes darting up from what he was vaguely reading. He didn't expect her to be awake that early in the morning. He could hear his heart pounding once more in his ears.

"I didn't expect you to be up this early," he said, the first thing that came to his startled mind. "Good morning," he added quickly, trying to preserve some appearance of normality even though he wasn't feeling normal in the least. "Sure. Tea would be good." At least he wasn't as nauseous as he was earlier that morning, and tea did typically help him settle. Somewhat.

Tracey did noticed that Theo jumped where he was sitting at his desk. He really did look like he just woke up. She shrugged when he observed that he didn't expect her to be up that early. "I couldn't really sleep. And I have to go into work today anyway," she said walking into his study, and going over to set his cup of tea down in front of him.

"Morning," she said lifting her own cup to take a sip. "I thought as much," she said when Theodore agreed that tea would be good. "So why are you up so early?" she asked, though she already had her suspicions.

"I just thought I'd get some work done now, seeing that I hadn't finished anything in the past couple of days," he looked at the cup of tea so that he wouldn't need to try any harder to act normal. It didn't explain why seven in the morning when he was normally a night person nor did it explain the nervous appearance and behaviour.

"Why are you up so early?" He asked, trying to turn all focus back on her as he had no interest in admitting that he is still affected by the nightmares.

"I see," Tracey said, understanding that Theodore might have to catch up on some work. She could only assume that he was having those nightmares still, and it was affecting his works habits. Still seven was still early to work.

She hid a smirk in her tea, when Theodore repeated the same question to her again. He clearly wasn't really listening. "I have to go into work. And I couldn't sleep," she said again.

"Oh yeah," Theodore said in realization that he already knew that. "I'm sorry." He wasn't certain whether he was more sorry for the lack of listening or for himself for just not faring terribly well for the past little while.

"Did you need any Sleeping Draughts? I have some in a cabinet in the kitchen, and the supply that I'm brewing should be completed in a few days." It was relatively good savings when creating such things in bulk in any case. Not that he'd admit that he's been consuming this in bulk on his non-'nightmare' nights.

"It's alright," Tracey said going over to lean against Theodore's desk. She knew he was stressed, from work and from lack of sleep, and the reason he hadn't been sleeping in general. She sipped her tea and let it warm her up.

"I do need some more actually," she said. She hadn't told Theodore she'd been taking any. Though she should have realized Theodore would have some and be using it himself. "Thanks."

"Take what you need. They are portioned out into vials," Theodore said, looking up and studying her carefully. She did look as if she hadn't slept.

"Don't worry too much, it's rather normal to experience such things after such events. And it changes over time." Well much unlike the 'nightmares' that found him every other night. They certainly didn't change. But he was fairly sure that this was far from 'normal'.

"Thank you. I can always count on you," Tracey said smiling a little. He was her best friend, and between him and Zacharias they were the only people she could really rely on now.

She sipped her tea as she leaned against Theo's desk. He was explaining how things would get better, but Tracey couldn't even think of it being better yet. Her brother was gone. How would that ever be okay? "Does the sleeping draught do anything to help you sleep better despite those nightmares?" she asked.

"I typically take them on days that I'm certain that I won't be affected by the nightmares," Theodore said with a shrug. "I get to sleep right away and generally remain uninterrupted in my sleep until the morning."

It was the nights with the 'nightmares' that typically were a bit more problematic. He had tried using all types of sleeping and dream potions, but to no effect. He was pretty much at the point of just not choosing to sleep on those particular days, which wasn't quite a longterm solution. Well it was either that or suffering through the 'nightmares.' And he hasn't quite determined which was worse yet.

"How do you know you won't be affect by them?" Tracey asked curiously. She wasn't having these kind of nightmares like everyone else, just the normal kind. She wondered how Theodore knew if he was going to have them or not.

"Do you only have these dreams at night? Maybe you should start taking more naps during the day. You do most of your work at night anyway," Tracey said sipping her tea. The last couple of days now, she'd been going back to her flat on her lunch break to take a nap. Not that she could escape her nightmare during the day.

"They've occured every other day without fail, whether it be that I sleep at night or during the day," Theodore said, looking at the clock, quills and parchment on the desk. "This quickly surfaces even when I take naps during the day. This is certainly not a normal nightmare."

He considered for a moment how he was going to put it. "Its mark has similarities to curses, but is quite different than anything I've seen. I'm reluctant to try to use any of the standard curse removal strategies without further investigation of potential--setbacks and aftereffects."

"Oh," Tracey said somberly. She should have been paying more attention to these nightmares, especially since they were affecting her friends, and the Daily Prophet was focusing on it. Though she did have her own... distractions. "So there really is no way to avoid it. Just getting enough sleep on the days you won't have them," Tracey nodding that she understood better now.

She did look at Theodore with concern at that suggestion. "Yeah... I'm not sure trying any curse removals would be useful until you know better how... everyone got these nightmares. You wouldn't want it to get worse," she said, realizing that she'd gone through her tea by now. "Are you ready to eat anything? I know you haven't been awake long."

"Of course," Theodore said to Tracey's comment about the curse removal. "It's far too risky, especially given that they were linked with the deaths of a number of people already. For all we know, removing the spots themselves may be fatal." He spoke in quite a non-chalant tone for someone who manages to possess one of the spots.

"I'm alright," Theodore said in response to her offering of breakfast. He wasn't sure whether his stomach had calmed enough. He suspected it did, but would rather not take any chances then and there.
