Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 15 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: michael corner

Characters: Anthony & Michael
Setting: 15 November (Saturday), around 12:24PM.
Summary: Best mates being best mates, possible definite angsting because that's what they do best.
Rating: PG-13 because there might be language.

Since the night before had been perfectly nightmare-free, Anthony had tried to look on a... brighter side. Tried being the key word because honestly, he had a few things to be less than positive about. Like, for instance, the fact that he was ever aware that later on he had a nightmare to look forward to. He really hoped the bad reaction had been a one time thing as he wasn't very keen on the idea of feeling as if he was still there for half the day after waking. It wasn't very conducive to functionality nor productivity and Anthony had things he needed to focus on.

Like the warning system for one. He'd need a second opinion on his theory once it was completely figured out... preferably someone with a good knowledge of charms and defense spells - maybe he should just talk to Hermione, actually. He didn't want everyone to think things were all safe and dandy and then find out that, no, it hadn't done anything helpful at all in the long run. Which was part of the reason he hadn't tried to push Michael into not feeling to blame about his potion. Even if that hadn't been Anthony's original intention. He'd been much more concerned with the urge to be sick and the like - which had been new in a horrible way, but that was beside the point.

The point was that Anthony was reasonably sure he might have had a pseudo-solution. Something part sneakoscope, part portkey-like for the wizards and something to notify the nearest wizard relative for the Muggles. Of course, he could always switch it up and have both notify the DA to be broader in terms of the amount of help available.

Thinking about this was a good way to not focus on the body he'd found yesterday evening with Zacharias Smith. He was sure it wasn't so much the body itself not that he had time to... process it, so much as it was what the body represented, and -

Anthony shook his head, knocking on the door to Michael's flat because he was a civilised person who didn't just go letting himself into people's places on his own, and he decided he was not going to finish that thought because then he'd likely end up like Lavender in a week's time and start calling everything hopeless and the like.

Michael considered what Anthony said. Seamus said in his journal that Dean and his mum were supposed to stop by the Leaky while he was on shift Friday, which meant that Dean and Fiona had been together - as the Prophet had pointed out, though having it confirmed by Seamus made Michael believe it more than the Prophet saying so.

"I don't know, that doesn't seem right though. Isn't that what she's known for? Even before, that's what she liked to do is torture people and so far no one else has been killed by anything less than some form of unusual torture. But even so, why would she take Dean? What use would he be to her?" While Dean did not have a memory, maybe he was kidnapped just because he was with Fiona at the time? She hadn't killed anyone who didn't have a memory so far though and it was rubbing Michael the wrong way to hear that Dean was kidnapped, but he was having trouble thinking of why. "I mean, Ron walked in on her murdering Penelope and she didn't bother to kidnap him and he doesn't have a memory. So why Dean?"

And then it hit him. Ron and Penelope. Ron's memory of the woman and Dean offering to draw the woman and then Michael saying that Dean could draw Lavender's memory of the woman in the fireplace as well. Michael banged his foot on the ground. "Fuck! He knew! He knew who she was, Anthony! He'd already seen her in Ron's memory of Penelope's murder, remember? He offered to draw her so that we could all know what she looked like. She probably noticed that he recognised her and took him because of it."

Anthony was sure that Michael was completely and absolutely right about Pandora's habits. It wasn't that Anthony was trying to be ignorant as to her practises, he just found that he could still do his part without really knowing in much detail as to what it was that she did, so he didn't give much information on her a second thought. At least it had worked for him so far.

Either way, he had nothing specific to give in terms of reasons for why she'd have gone after Dean, if it was Pandora, and so he let Michael talk out his thoughts on the matter, his eyebrows raising a bit in surprise, though, it did of course make sense if that was what happened.

"Is that a good thing, though? I mean, it's loads better than finding him in the alley, too, would have been -- even though I think that even with that it depends on how you'd prefer to look at it, but overall...?" Anthony couldn't help the fact that he tended to see the bad first. It was just there.

Michael shrugged, not really sure if it was good or not. "If she took him that meant that she didn't necessarily mean to kill him right away. So that gives him a chance, if nothing else. I don't know if it's a good one but..." The last thing that they needed right now was to lose a member of the DA. Sure, they weren't exactly getting anywhere particularly useful so far, but that didn't change the fact that Michael just felt safer with them all around him, advancements or not.

However that did not change the fact that none of them were really all that safe and Lavender - and now maybe even he - was in more danger than the rest and he still hadn't mentioned any of it to Anthony. And he knew better than not to do so, he just hadn't felt like he blurting it out, or maybe he just wasn't sure how to tell him without worrying him more. Michael leaned back into the sofa, and looked down at his lap, picking at his sweatpants a bit as he spoke as nonchalantly as possible. "Er, so we may have also seen Greyback yesterday when I went to visit Lav..."

There wasn't really anything left to say on that, was there? Unless there was some vigilante mission put into effect, either Dean turned up alive or dead and there wasn't much that could actually be done about it until then.

And he wasn't buying any of the nonchalance that Michael was trying to force into his tone either, and he was sure that if Michael had actually been looking at him, then the narrow-eyed look Anthony was giving him would properly tell him as much. "May have?" he echoed. "Don't try to downplay it as if it isn't a pretty big deal." Or as if the tone he used would be enough to somehow curb Anthony from worrying at least a little.

It was a big deal, but it was easier to pretend it wasn't and try not to worry about it himself because if he did then he'd have to admit that maybe he'd got himself into a situation he may likely not be able to get out of. If that were the case, he'd deal with it accordingly, because he wasn't going to just up and leave Lavender where she stood, but it was still a hard thing to deal with either way. "It wasn't that bad. He just sort of stood there and watched us for a bit. I think he was trying to make Lav feel threatened and since I was the first one who noticed him it wasn't working really.

"But she has SOS bubblegum so really, it didn't take long for the auror to get there and Greyback left after that. He had a wizard with him though." Michael sighed heavily. If it weren't for the wizard nothing really would have happened at all. "The wizard killed Lav's dog, the bastard. Who does that? Fucking arse. The auror wanted Lavender to have her family leave town but I don't think they can, what with their business there and all. She didn't seem very happy with it, but what can you expect? Not everyone can just pick up and move at a moment's notice..." He was prattling on about Lavender again, probably on purpose right now to circumvent the fact that Greyback had seen him and now knew he was close to Lavender and that probably put him in danger too. It was easier to try and ignore it though than to consider as a real possibility.

He could see what Michael was selling, but Anthony wasn't sure that he was buying. Mainly because it sounded a lot as if Michael was not only trying to convince Anthony, but himself as well. And, honestly, the last thing he really wanted to talk about was Lavender -- completely as part of his general lack of wanting to hear about whatever happened to be going on with her, even when it was only about normal everyday things.

"Right, not that bad at all, I'm sure. I mean," Anthony shrugged, his nonchalance almost mocking, "it's not like we're talking about a former Death Eater werewolf with disturbing habits, right?" And because he was not indulging Michael's attempt to divert the conversation elsewhere, he ignored all mention of Lavender.

Michael knew what that tone meant and he could tell that Anthony was not really falling for the act, which didn't really help since it wasn't just for Anthony. If Greyback really was a threat to him now, who knew what that might mean for the future.

"Well I mean, the Death Eaters are disbanded, right? He's not really got any help there. And who knows if he has a pack anymore; it may just be him and that wizard which means once the aurors find him they can get him back into Azkaban where he belongs. And the full moon is quite a ways away so we won't have to worry about that problem for a while so that's a plus. It could be worse, really." Though Lavender's niece and nephew should probably not be going to Eastbourne anymore all things considered.

There wasn't actually much keeping Anthony from telling Michael how much like bullshit that sounded to him, other than the fact that it partly occurred to him why Michael was trying to hold onto the idea that it wasn't as bad as it really actually was. So instead of giving another sarcastic reply, he bit his bottom lip. Though, he really really wanted to say more.

"Yeah. Right," Anthony tried to actually say lightly, but even to him it just came off a bit more as if he was taking a bit of a break and would return to heavily disagreeing with Michael on how bad this new development was or wasn't the next chance he got. Which, was likely actually true, he suspected.
