Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 14 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: zacharias smith

Characters: Anthony & Zacharias
Setting: 14 November (Friday) @ 5:15PM.
Summary: Accidental run-ins, yay!
Rating: Safe for work, we're sure.

Anthony would have liked nothing more than to go straight to his flat and sleep well into the evening. If he could, at least. Ever since he'd managed to tear himself from the nightmare as it had returned the night before, it had sort of just... lingered with him. Almost as if no matter how hard he could have tried to actually concentrate on something neutral - like work, for instance - it just didn't work. It had been no better when it came to those topics he'd wanted to do some research for, either. Which meant that the only thing he'd managed to do all day was owl Michael while still panicking about how awful it had been. Usually, when he woke up, it still bothered him, but in a way where he was able to quickly realise that it hadn't been him, it had really been someone else; there had been no such realisation today.

All in all, Anthony felt less people-ready than his usual, and if it wasn't for the fact that he was very much sure that he had nothing in his flat to eat and should just buy some takeaway, he would have gone straight home. Thinking on his options, though, he was distracted and not doing very well at watching where he was going - the main reason he walked straight into someone else.

"Sorry, I - " He stopped when he saw who it was he'd knocked into. "Sorry."

Anthony gave Zacharias a look, close to completely giving over to the idea of being distracted, because honestly, he was such a prick, even if it was completely Anthony's fault that they were even having this conversation to begin with.

"That's what everyone keeps telling me," he all but muttered under his breath. Not that he doubted the idea, exactly; he was well and truly able to notice that most of what he was good at was based in knowledge and research and things of that nature, but he almost wished he had... something else. Sometimes. So people could stop pointing out that he was smart. "Anyway, I'm well aware of that obvious bit, thank you. I was wondering in a more exact sort of way."

He nearly repeated the comment or offered some variation on it because that wasn't a very smart thing to say. Wondering didn't really help any, but then again harassing Anthony Goldstein, who for better or worse, seemed to be his accomplice at the moment, didn't help either. The alley. That was what he was supposed to be focusing on and not the fact that he was the big question hanging between them.

And what came next was not what one would expect from Zacharias Smith, the great flee-er of the Battle of Hogwarts. "Well, there would only be one way to figure that out." At the moment he finally seemed to be considering going over there, something shift. Maybe the spell changed or was weakened, but it wasn't quite the same anymore. It wasn't such a struggle or an immediately bad idea to look.

Zacharias was right, of course. And then Anthony had to pause, because he wasn't actually sure how to feel about the fact that he'd actually had that thought, and it wasn't sarcastic. It was the Zacharias part, he was sure of it. And of the fact that the last person he would have expected - even when the choices were only between the two of them - to decide to check out the why of the spell was him.

Anthony realised he was letting himself be distracted yet again, and he returned his attention to the alleyway. "All right, then," he said, taking a few steps forward as he found - not exactly striding forward because, well, that just didn't seem safe, but more of a cautious sort - that the urge to do something else wasn't as strong as it had been just a few moments ago.

It was still stupid, to be walking into something where wards were up to keep people out, but maybe the time to be stupid was now. Still, he adjusted his wand so it was within easy reach, a safe apparation point in the front of his mind just in case he needed to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Rather than approach the alleyway straight on, Zacharias started toward it at an angle. There didn't seem to be anything happening there anymore, unless there was some other ward up to make it go unseen and unheard. Well, they would find that one way or the other. They were at the opening of the alley now and no one seemed to be paying them much attention, which probably meant that on some level the don't-notice spell was still working, it was just getting weaker or they had somehow become immune. He glanced over at Anthony one more time, checking to see if they were really going to do this.

Anthony wasn't really sure about how much he wanted to actually do this, considering that he was very fond of not staying out of trouble, and he generally just sort of avoided it when it could - unless Michael was the one dragging him into something, but that was Michael. But he was still curious, and considering that they had actually made it to the alleyway, it just seemed sort of... wrong to not figure out what exactly was being hidden.

Being sure that his wand was well within reach if necessary, he matched Zacharias' glance with a shrug and took the first step inside the alley. He looked around and almost immediately froze in place as he found what what was possibly the reason for the spell. Was that a - fuck.

It could have been ironic, that Zacharias nearly walked into Anthony as he stopped short. It would have been ironic and maybe even worth a good chuckle if that wasn't a body. "You're fucking kidding me," he said reflexively. And not even a slutty muggle to make this better and worse at the same time.

How was this his life? At least this body wasn't as body, although it did seem to have been picked at by something. He didn't recognize the woman. "She's dead, isn't she?" And it looked like there had been some sort of struggle and quite the hole in the middle of the alleyway.

Anthony's reaction was a bit more wide-eyed shock than having anything to say. Not that he hadn't ever seen a body before; he had. But that had been more than five years ago at the Battle of Hogwarts and it had been sort of expected what with fighting for his life that some people might die. This was different, since no one was expecting to find a dead body in an alleyway in Diagon Alley. It just wasn't... normal. The current situation being what it was didn't make that any less true.

He didn't exactly see it as a positive, but he was sort of grateful not to recognise the woman as anyone he'd know. And he guessed she probably hadn't gone very easily, either. "I'd say, with the open eyes and the blank stare and the lack of movement, she's definitely, definitely dead."
