anthony goldstein has a chart for this. ([info]logiclogiclogic) wrote in [info]pandorarpg,

Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 14 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: zacharias smith

Characters: Anthony & Zacharias
Setting: 14 November (Friday) @ 5:15PM.
Summary: Accidental run-ins, yay!
Rating: Safe for work, we're sure.

Anthony would have liked nothing more than to go straight to his flat and sleep well into the evening. If he could, at least. Ever since he'd managed to tear himself from the nightmare as it had returned the night before, it had sort of just... lingered with him. Almost as if no matter how hard he could have tried to actually concentrate on something neutral - like work, for instance - it just didn't work. It had been no better when it came to those topics he'd wanted to do some research for, either. Which meant that the only thing he'd managed to do all day was owl Michael while still panicking about how awful it had been. Usually, when he woke up, it still bothered him, but in a way where he was able to quickly realise that it hadn't been him, it had really been someone else; there had been no such realisation today.

All in all, Anthony felt less people-ready than his usual, and if it wasn't for the fact that he was very much sure that he had nothing in his flat to eat and should just buy some takeaway, he would have gone straight home. Thinking on his options, though, he was distracted and not doing very well at watching where he was going - the main reason he walked straight into someone else.

"Sorry, I - " He stopped when he saw who it was he'd knocked into. "Sorry."

He supposed that yelling at the on air personalities minutes before air wasn't the best idea. It was a sure way that he was the one who got sent to pick up dinner for the staff right before they went to air. It was the sort of thing the the newest intern was meant to do, but also went to the biggest moron of the day and apparently that went to him today.

What was way to end a week.

The Marietta thing was bothering him, eating away at him far more than the money and being a Smith thing. So he was making a quick go of his penance errand. Or at least he was until he was walked straight into, sending coffee and take away all over the place. "That's just fucking brilliant."

Though it wasn't bad as it absolutely could be, Anthony was aware - after all, he could be dead and that would definitely be worst overall - he was starting to realise that he was not having a very good past few days. Running into someone was pretty much horrible in and of itself, but the added realisation that the person he'd run into was Zacharias Smith of all people sort of made it all the more awful.

"Did I... mention that I was sorry?" Anthony asked again as he gave everything Zacharias had been carrying just a moment ago a once over. "Very sorry," he amended.

He took a deep breath in and then let it go out. Normally he wasn't one to hold back because people who were idiots deserved to know when they were being idiots. The problem was when they were sort of pathetic to start with, then it wasn't any fun, it just plain mean. And Anthony Goldstein? Definitely on the pathetic to start with category.

"Yes, yes, I get it your sorry, not that it solve the issue at hand." Luckily his jacket and shoes received the worst of the food and drink splatter. It made it a bit more manageable, but not exactly better. He was still going to have to place the order again and the longer it took, the more shit he was going to get back at the office. And that was just what he needed. "I do hope at least you were distracted by something important and are not just this clumsy naturally."

Anthony was rather curious as to what he could have possibly done to deserve having to run into both Smith and Marietta Edgecombe within thirty-six hours of each other. He didn't happen to think he was a bad person, even if he did tend to be a little less than people-inclined. So why was it that he couldn't just make it home without incident? Would that have been too much to ask?

Anthony frowned a bit as he wasn't exactly sure that he would care no matter what Anthony had been distracted by, considering the mess it had caused. Running a hand through his hair, he said, "I think it sort of... depends, since importance kind of... ranges from person to person. Though I'm not naturally clumsy, no."

Zacharias sighed, diverting his gaze elsewhere. He was sure that if he had to look at Anthony and the pitiful excuse that things were only going to get worse. The alley was filled with it's normal sort of foot traffic for a Friday evening. It was busy but not too busy, with people mostly on their way home and a few out shopping or heading out for dinner.

His brow furrowed as he watched two people, a few seconds a part from each other, veer off their intended course. Then a moment later he could have sworn he saw a building sort of shake. What bothered him more was that he could have sworn there was an alley there, but it was like his brain couldn't quite remember it or even see it. It was like he didn't want to look.

"Shut up for a second," he said grabbing Anthony directing him a few feet down the way. The new location would grant a better viewing point to the alley that seemingly didn't want to be seen. "There," he said motioning toward the general space more than actually pointing to it. "Do you see something?"

Anthony had been thinking that maybe he could get out of this and go home if he just offered to buy the replacements for everything he'd knocked out of Zacharias' hand, because, obviously, other than being able to replace the time wasted - which wasn't possible at all - that had to be the next best thing, right?

He opened his mouth, fully intending on making that offer and already reaching to hand over money that possibly would have been more than was actually needed, but then Zacharias had grabbed him and was dragging him a few feet forward and Anthony sincerely hoped that he wasn't about to be physically attacked as he didn't much think he could handle adding that as another part of this day.

Before he could make anything that might've been a plea to work things out civilly, he was being directed to look at... Anthony wasn't exactly sure what he was being directed to look at but looking at it reminded him that he just wanted to give Zacharias some money and go home and put the rubbish day behind him. "No, but - it just..." he frowned a bit. "It feels weird... like I'm being told not to."

Zacharias was sure that the appropriate response here was to go with that instinct that told him not to look. It certainly would be safer and he really wasn't one to go looking for trouble. But at the moment, the other option was to yell at Anthony or just give it up and return to the office and admit dinner defeat.

"But why?" Rather than focus on the alley, which he couldn't seem to do, he was watching the people interact, or decidedly not interact with it, and it sort of bothered him. Especially the part where he sort of wanted to know what was going on. "If it's just a couple having at it in the alley, that would be a strong don't-notice spell there."

Curiosity could be a horrible sort of thing and this instance caught his. He might not have been looking to be a hero, but even as the spell was directing him to let it go, he just couldn't.

Anthony's instincts were telling him that this was a very, very bad idea in that way where, exactly as Zacharias had said, if it was just some randy couple in an alley, it didn't make any sense for it to be as strong as it evidently was. (But, of course, Anthony would go off on a tangent that maybe being in the... heat of the moment or what-have-you had made the spell stronger than intended and that maybe it was all right and they could just part ways.)

"Definitely not a couple," he paused, making a face, "having at it, I don't think."

That fact that he was sure, and he was sure that Zacharias was sure, that it was most definitely something other than a couple shagging almost had Anthony itching to leave. It sparked his sense of self-preservation which he'd admittedly had doubted existed very strongly until this entire mess had started. It wasn't that he was curious that kept him from leaving though, not completely. "And if it's not some couple, then why the spell?"

Was it possible that there was a person more repressed than Ernie Macmillan? Judging by Anthony's unwillingness to even use the euphemism, it certainly seemed so. What was worse than a Virgin Boy? Someone afraid of sex and intimacy all together - only that would make a very long nickname and not something worth remembering to keep repeating. Except, no, that was not what he was supposed to be thinking about. That was the distraction, that was what the spell wanted him to do.

"Well, clearly someone doesn't want to be bothered." He said like it was the most obvious thing in the world because it was. And if it wasn't sex, then it had to be danger and that was not his sort of thing. Not at all, which he supposed made it easier for him to go back off track from the alley. "I thought you were smart, aren't you supposed to be smart?"

Anthony gave Zacharias a look, close to completely giving over to the idea of being distracted, because honestly, he was such a prick, even if it was completely Anthony's fault that they were even having this conversation to begin with.

"That's what everyone keeps telling me," he all but muttered under his breath. Not that he doubted the idea, exactly; he was well and truly able to notice that most of what he was good at was based in knowledge and research and things of that nature, but he almost wished he had... something else. Sometimes. So people could stop pointing out that he was smart. "Anyway, I'm well aware of that obvious bit, thank you. I was wondering in a more exact sort of way."

He nearly repeated the comment or offered some variation on it because that wasn't a very smart thing to say. Wondering didn't really help any, but then again harassing Anthony Goldstein, who for better or worse, seemed to be his accomplice at the moment, didn't help either. The alley. That was what he was supposed to be focusing on and not the fact that he was the big question hanging between them.

And what came next was not what one would expect from Zacharias Smith, the great flee-er of the Battle of Hogwarts. "Well, there would only be one way to figure that out." At the moment he finally seemed to be considering going over there, something shift. Maybe the spell changed or was weakened, but it wasn't quite the same anymore. It wasn't such a struggle or an immediately bad idea to look.

Zacharias was right, of course. And then Anthony had to pause, because he wasn't actually sure how to feel about the fact that he'd actually had that thought, and it wasn't sarcastic. It was the Zacharias part, he was sure of it. And of the fact that the last person he would have expected - even when the choices were only between the two of them - to decide to check out the why of the spell was him.

Anthony realised he was letting himself be distracted yet again, and he returned his attention to the alleyway. "All right, then," he said, taking a few steps forward as he found - not exactly striding forward because, well, that just didn't seem safe, but more of a cautious sort - that the urge to do something else wasn't as strong as it had been just a few moments ago.

It was still stupid, to be walking into something where wards were up to keep people out, but maybe the time to be stupid was now. Still, he adjusted his wand so it was within easy reach, a safe apparation point in the front of his mind just in case he needed to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Rather than approach the alleyway straight on, Zacharias started toward it at an angle. There didn't seem to be anything happening there anymore, unless there was some other ward up to make it go unseen and unheard. Well, they would find that one way or the other. They were at the opening of the alley now and no one seemed to be paying them much attention, which probably meant that on some level the don't-notice spell was still working, it was just getting weaker or they had somehow become immune. He glanced over at Anthony one more time, checking to see if they were really going to do this.

Anthony wasn't really sure about how much he wanted to actually do this, considering that he was very fond of not staying out of trouble, and he generally just sort of avoided it when it could - unless Michael was the one dragging him into something, but that was Michael. But he was still curious, and considering that they had actually made it to the alleyway, it just seemed sort of... wrong to not figure out what exactly was being hidden.

Being sure that his wand was well within reach if necessary, he matched Zacharias' glance with a shrug and took the first step inside the alley. He looked around and almost immediately froze in place as he found what what was possibly the reason for the spell. Was that a - fuck.

It could have been ironic, that Zacharias nearly walked into Anthony as he stopped short. It would have been ironic and maybe even worth a good chuckle if that wasn't a body. "You're fucking kidding me," he said reflexively. And not even a slutty muggle to make this better and worse at the same time.

How was this his life? At least this body wasn't as body, although it did seem to have been picked at by something. He didn't recognize the woman. "She's dead, isn't she?" And it looked like there had been some sort of struggle and quite the hole in the middle of the alleyway.

Anthony's reaction was a bit more wide-eyed shock than having anything to say. Not that he hadn't ever seen a body before; he had. But that had been more than five years ago at the Battle of Hogwarts and it had been sort of expected what with fighting for his life that some people might die. This was different, since no one was expecting to find a dead body in an alleyway in Diagon Alley. It just wasn't... normal. The current situation being what it was didn't make that any less true.

He didn't exactly see it as a positive, but he was sort of grateful not to recognise the woman as anyone he'd know. And he guessed she probably hadn't gone very easily, either. "I'd say, with the open eyes and the blank stare and the lack of movement, she's definitely, definitely dead."

Zacharias wasn't sure what it said about his life that this sort of thing didn't really bother him. Potter had been worse, so much worse. And now, seeing the woman laying there - it was just a sort of numb. He didn't like it, but it wasn't any sort of shock. If anything it was annoyance. "I suppose that answers the question about why the don't-notice spell."

And some answer it was. Zacharias let out a long sigh, before glancing over at Anthony who didn't seem to be handling this all that well. Did that make him the responsible one now? Merlin, that wasn't fair at all. "I can stay here while you go call someone." It would just be one more body to be caught with, and if the Department where still just as full of idiots he might even be held over night again.

Anthony couldn't help but to snort at that, though his expression didn't change much. He guessed there were things to be glad for. Like the fact that it didn't in fact turn out to be a bloody scene, because there was no chance in hell that Anthony would have been able to have kept his lunch down if that had been the case.

He wondered, very briefly, if she'd been killed because of the nightmares, and that was the last thought he'd needed floating in his brain, especially right now. It just lent itself to roads he was trying and currently succeeding to not go down. He nodded, then, accepting Zacharias' suggestion without argument. "We should - we should do that, yeah." He took a step back towards leaving the alley. "I'll just... go."

"And I'll be here," he said as Anthony made his leave. Zacharias pulled out his wand, preferring to have it in his hand and at the ready just in case. There were just nearly dead people walking lately and really an idiot of a murderer might come back to the scene to finish the job. More than anything it gave him a false sense of comfort as he waited for Anthony to return with people who were paid to deal with this shit.

Maybe Zacharias should have thought about his decision again, because now he was alone with the body, wand at the ready. Presumably the ripples of the don't-notice spell were still in effect, but someone could still wander over. Although really, what it gave him was space to think. Whose mother did they find? Would there now be a spouse to identify the body? He felt a pang of sympathy, knowing what was coming next.

Once out of the alley and away from the sight of the dead older woman, Anthony decided to think logically. What he needed right now was to find the nearest shop with a fireplace connected to the Floo and call the DMLE to do... what it was they did. Anthony didn't actually give much thought to what store as long he did what he was supposed to. It took a bit for Anthony to find the right person to help him, and then there was that whole bit where he had to explain just how he had come across the body - which he had been pretty sure had meant including the part about how he had bumped into Zacharias as that was what had led them to the alley anyway, but the Auror had looked at him as if it hadn't been important, so Anthony had just suggested there be some authorities in Diagon Alley as soon as possible to deal with the dead person in the alley and left it at that.

While he'd waited, he tried not to think too much about the likely reason the woman had been killed and tried to concentrate on other things, like the DA meeting tomorrow and the fact that he wanted to, while not getting anyone's hopes up, discuss what he thought might work for a warning system and the like, though he wasn't very fond of the idea of talking in front of everyone. He wished most that he didn't have to think about it, or not as the case was.

He was startled from his thoughts when the fireplace came to life, but thankful for it and he didn't waste any time to lead the two Aurors right back to the alley he'd left Zacharias in. Resisting the urge to look at the body, he focused instead on a wall instead. He tried not to be very surprised when, as if Anthony's retelling hadn't been quite up to par, one of the Aurors turned to Zacharias.

Zacharias ran a hand through his hair, tucking his wand away as the aurors approached. Perhaps this time he might even get a chance to explain himself before he was bound and locked away. He even did his best to ignore the slight about this being the second body he was found with, it wasn't like he went looking for these things.

It did probably work in his favor that the person wasn't with him wasn't some hysterical half naked woman, but rather a somewhat respected man who even freaked out could manage to keep his wits about him. He gave the auror the basics of what had happened while the other worked to further secure the scene.

It would seem that any thoughts of immediately getting back to the office were best to be abandoned. Zacharias might be taken away bound, but both he and Anthony would have to go back to the department and likely give their official statements about what they saw. Not that there was anything to see, it was more of a finding.

Anthony had this feeling, deep down, that the hope he'd had of making it back to his flat and all but crashing so that he could completely leave this day behind him was pretty much null and void at this point. Which was just as he should have expected. Evidently it would have been too much to ask for an all right end to his day.

And then he was reminded that someone was dead and his inability to go home and instead go right back to the very place he'd just spent eight hours of his day to help tell what he knew might have been a bit more important in an unselfish sort of way.

Not for the first time, though, he wished he'd been paying attention to where he'd been going earlier.
