Characters: All invited guests
Setting: The Chambers Home, Newport, Wales; Friday night (anywhere from 5pm onwards)
Rating: Probably in the PG-13 range
Summary: To celebrate a birthday/a dead mother/and a plan!

If this party had been simply a party then it might have been cancelled. However, when it came to the Chambers family nothing was simple because where was the fun in that? Not to mention as a basic practice there wasn't anything especially exciting or worth celebrating with birthdays. They always happened, marking a simple passage of time. However, if social norms dictated they be celebrated, then why not make actual use of them?

Of course then it had to be more complicated at the last minute, didn't it? Zacharias Smith had found it fit to gift them with a house elf yesterday who he didn't trust even as Taffy went on about the Griffiths family. And then there was the nanny who he didn't quite like the sight of, but he would deal with that if he needed to. Then there was the minor detail that Cecelia had been murdered adding another variable to the evening. At the first two had actually proven useful in helping to set up for the dinner, the nanny keeping Jason entertained and Taffy cleaning and preparing the meal.

Not that any of that mattered. No, this whole evening was engineered with the sole intent of finding the appropriate test subject. Surely, there were ethics against that sort of thing, but Eli was generally under the impression that ethics were created to protect men who were too afraid to take the leap and do what had to be done.

Tonight what had to be done involved abusing a friendship he had since Hogwarts, but it was not without cause. Eli needed to know how this worked, he needed as much data as possible on the magic being used around Pandora's memories if ever hoped to not only create a working theory, but actually find application. Glancing at the clock in his study, he saw it was quickly approaching five o'clock and he needed to be finished before then in case anyone had the audacity to arrive early.

So, he put away his work, carefully transferring his recreated Pandora memory into a vial and onto his person for later use before reestablishing the wards on this room to ensure it remained out of bounds. It wouldn't do to have people messing with his things - although then there would be another reason to have to kill them and he was going to have to talk to Samara about that idea - although perhaps later. Right now, he needed to switch into something more like a personable mode so he could get through the niceties and actually have the space needed for the real work.

Aggie's day had brought to mind the expression 'Be careful what you wish for...' She'd longed for more excitement, pined for the days when she had chased after Death Eaters, and her 'prayers' had been answered with the escape of the magical world's most infamous werewolf, and her being assigned the case. She'd been all over wizarding Britain, from Azkaban to Hogsmeade, from the Ministry to visiting with a couple of survivors who had lived to tell the tale of their encounters with Fenrir Greyback. It was mostly a fact-gathering mission, as she had little doubt Greyback would eventually return to his favourite hunting grounds in the Forbidden Forest. She didn't know if any of his old pack remained, and that was something she would have to keep searching for if she were to ever track him down.

In all honesty, a party was the last thing she wanted to attend on a day like this, but it was for Samara, whom Aggie had neglected far too much of late and who needed as many friends as possible after her mother's death. She'd quickly returned home and sped through her closet, finding something suitable and rushing out without even caring to put on makeup. Her father was likely turning in his grave.

She was surprised to be greeted at the door by a house elf - since when did Samara and Eli get one? - and allowed herself to be let in. She hated to come empty-handed, but Samara's gift was still being held at Twilfitt & Tattings as Aggie'd been overly busy the last three days and had been unable to go fetch it during store hours. She handed her cloak to the elf and walked where he indicated the party would take place.

Astoria had arrived right behind Agatha, but hadn't been able to identify her as she approached the house. It had been a while since she'd been in the Chamber's home, she always felt a bit uncomfortable in their home, even when Eli wasn't around. She wasn't exactly sure why, but it was probably largely in part of her not being a "proper" Pureblood as many of the rest of them seemed to think. Still, Samara was family, and she would of course be there for her in her time of trouble. And celebration... it was really going to be a strange party, she thought.

After being let in and having her coat taken, she stepped into the room and finally recognized Agatha, though she didn't know her perfectly, she had seen her and spoken with her before since their departments worked together. She smoothed out her dress, which served the purpose of being classy enough for this kind of get together, and yet in the appropriate colors for mourning. "Ms. Bole," Astoria said as she stepped closer to her. "It's so nice to see you again."

Aggie smiled at the young woman who approached her. "Miss Greengrass, it's nice to see you as well. I didn't know you knew Samara and Eli."

She looked down as the house elf came by with a tray of wine glasses, taking one and sipping it carefully. She was still recovering from the last few days and didn't want to risk going loopy from the drink and making a fool out of herself. If she was going to do that, she preferred being sober for it.

Astoria smiled at her as she took a glass as well, taking a quick sip, before responding to her. "Yes, Samara is actually a cousin of mine, she's ever so good to me," Astoria smiled again.

"You look very nice tonight, Ms. Bole," Astoria said. She may not be dressed to the nines, but Astoria liked her outfit. She kind of wanted the jacket, to be honest.

"You're lucky to have cousins you get on with. Pesonally, I can't stand mine," she joked.

She looked down at her clothes. "Thank you. I'd originally wanted to wear something a little more colourful, but after the news, I didn't think it would be appropriate." Not to mention she wasn't much of a clothes shopping type, not at her size anyway.

"You look quite lovely yourself. Your earrings are charming, by the way."

Astoria nodded. "It is always nice when family is easy to get along with, but I have my fair share of those who are not, so I know how you feel." She smiled pleasantly, she was fairly sure most people had at least one family member who was hard to put up with.

"Yes, I was so sad to hear about Cecilia, I had planned on wearing something more upbeat originally too, but I expect a more somber mood will be about, though I've never known the Chambers to let tragedy stop them completely. They're very resiliant." She did admire them for that.

"Thank you, they were my mothers, but she abhors earrings now, for some reason or another. I thought they were quite fun!"

"I suppose resilient is one way of putting it," she offered. Detached and in denial was another, not that Aggie had any intention of saying anything about it. Samara was her friend and she would never turn her back on her, whatever her thoughts on the woman's husband. Plus, Jason was simply adorable.

"So, has anything interesting been happening in the Obliviators' offices?"

Though Astoria also would not have said it, she would have agreed completely with Agatha. Even though she and her mother did not exactly get along, she would cancel her life if she died. She gave Agatha a knowing look though at her comment, thinking of a number of other ways she could think of to put it, but not saying them.

She looked down at her glass for a moment before answering. "Nothing terribly interesting, no. I was in the field yesterday at the Clearwater girl's house while her family collected her things, and I got to deliver her cat to a friend of hers, but that's about as exciting as it has been so far." She knew better than to ask the same of her, the Auror's must be nearly dead from all the overtime they were surely working. Still, she couldn't say she wasn't curious to know what was going on there. "How have the investigations been going?" she asked.

"Poor thing," she said with regards to the Clearwater case. "Now that's one family that must be going through hell right now. The younger brother dead days earlier, then her. Just tragic."

She sighed and shrugged. "I'm not involved in the big case, but I just got a new one today. Greyback." All it took was the one word to express her sentiments on all of it.

Astoria nodded her agreement. "I was impressed by how well the family held things together while at her flat. I don't think I would have managed it in their place." She had to agree that they were going through hell, perhaps that was even a bit of an understatement, but there wasn't really anything she could do about it.

"Yes, I read about that this morning. Terrifying. They've assigned you to the task of hunting him down? I can't say I envy you on that one, but wish you the best of luck at least. I can't imagine he'll make anything easy for you on that front." Astoria shivered a little. She had met Greyback once when her father was heavily involved in his Death Eater stuff, and even though he'd never even looked at her and she spent most of the time staying far away from him, it was still terrifying just thinking about it.

Honestly, Kinjal wished she could say that her day had been very interesting. She'd woken up half-past noon as had been the usual for her days, though she'd been shocked to read about Samara's mother's death in the paper. Not that she'd considered not attending before, but especially with that piece of news, she felt her presence was especially required as Samara was a close friend of hers. Thanks to her job being mostly of the nocturnal sort - and that reminded her that she actually had to go to work after this, Kin had had the luxury of taking her time picking out what she felt like wearing for the dinner. She had to admit that it had taken her a little longer to find something that wasn't too much. Personally, Kinjal thought that covering up the tattoo plenty counted as being conservative enough - or maybe that was the effect of her job bleeding into her personal life.

All in all, getting ready had only taken her a little more than a half hour and she decided that she had made very good time as she hadn't at all intended to be early. She took her time arriving at the house, and only raised her eyebrow slightly at there being a house elf. Once she was let in, had handed over her cloak and guided to the room where the party would be starting, she spotted Agatha and made her way over to the other woman.

But first, she was going to get herself a drink and she took that minor detour before returning her attention to approaching Agatha, smiling warmly.

Aggie smiled, glad to see a friendly face. She opened her arms for a small hug as Kinjal approached.

"Kin, it's been too long. You lot need to let me know when I've been neglecting you too much. You know how I get caught up in my work."

She eyed her friend up and down, nodding in approval. "You're looking well, as always."

Kinjal returned the hug without the least bit of hesitation, easily taking a place across from the other woman, though she waved her off.

"I haven't felt terribly neglected. I know how time-consuming work can be sometimes. Though, in your case I think it has a bit more importance to the general public." Of course, Kinjal didn't think there was anything wrong with her job in the least bit, but she could be objective enough to recognise that an Auror was a bit more important than a stripper in the scheme of things.

Kinjal smiled then, "Thanks. So are you." Which was a lot truth and a bit small talk all wrapped up into one.

Aggie sighed. "Merlin, it's only going to get worse. Did you hear about Greyback's escape from Azkaban? Well guess who's job it is to find him now?"

She lifted her wine glass and downed the rest of it, knowing she shouldn't but feeling the urge to do so anyway. She could really use a firewhiskey, but not now, this was Samara's party.

"And I thought the days of carrying around silver knives were over with. I do hope they don't clash with my boots," she joked with a roll of her eyes. "And speaking of people needing a knife in their gullet, has Eli come down yet?"

"Probably a few hours later than most people, but I did." She raised her eyebrows then, not envying her friend in the slightest for that task as she took a sip from her own glass. "I'd be careful if I were you. The wrong boots could set the entire outfit off. And not in a good way, either." Kinjal was joking, too, of course.

"I haven't seen him yet." She hoped the plan wasn't to leave them to mingle by themselves for the entire hour as that might get a bit old past speaking with Agatha and Roger.

Aggie shook her head. Eli rubbed her the wrong way, that was for certain, probably because she felt as if she might have to arrest him one day. She'd arrested far too many people she'd known through school or family/pureblood connections, and she was perhaps getting a little oversensitive to anything 'different' in people.

Plus, Eli was an Unspeakable. Enough said.

"Probably off shagging again and leaving us little people to mingle. Merlin, I need a date," she laughed. "And you? Any prospects lately?"

Kinjal would have to admit that she didn't really have too much of an opinion on Eli other than as Samara's husband. Well, she did get the feeling that he might be just slightly... off, but then. She was sure the same thing could be said of her at times, so she didn't exactly hold it against him.

"Oh, Merlin, no." Kin shook her head negatively. It wasn't that she wouldn't mind anyone, but it was the fact that she was wary of meeting someone and they had an issue with her work as she had no plans whatsoever of changing it. She liked what she did, and she was good at it. "I think I might be a bit desensitised to sex anyway - must be all the hard ons." She grinned a bit. "Either way, I bet you'll find one before I do. Well, if you can get away from work for a bit."

She snorted. "Meaning never, in my case. Workaholic, thy name is Bole," she teased. "At least we get to visit with Jason whenever we feel the need to be around children - and him we can spoil then send home. Better than being parents, in fact!"

She did, however, briefly wonder what it would be like to work in the presence of so many randy men. On the rare occasion, she'd gotten into a fightfight with someone only to find he'd gotten hard, but aside from that, she couldn't relate. "Maybe what you need to do is find either an impotent bloke, or switch to women," she joked. "Better yet, get a dog - you can cuddle all you like, and they'll never demand a blow job."

"All work and no play makes Aggie a tad boring," Kinjal teased back with a grin. "And Jason is definitely the closest I need to be to children. Sending them home's the best part."

She couldn't help but to laugh at that. "An impotent bloke, really? I know I said I said I'm a bit bored with the current lack of excitement, but Merlin. I don't think I'd mind a shag every once in a while." She studiously ignored the part about switching to women as there really wasn't any need to switch; she was very much already there. "A dog? Now there's something. As long as I can get someone else to walk it."
