Characters: All invited guests
Setting: The Chambers Home, Newport, Wales; Friday night (anywhere from 5pm onwards)
Rating: Probably in the PG-13 range
Summary: To celebrate a birthday/a dead mother/and a plan!

If this party had been simply a party then it might have been cancelled. However, when it came to the Chambers family nothing was simple because where was the fun in that? Not to mention as a basic practice there wasn't anything especially exciting or worth celebrating with birthdays. They always happened, marking a simple passage of time. However, if social norms dictated they be celebrated, then why not make actual use of them?

Of course then it had to be more complicated at the last minute, didn't it? Zacharias Smith had found it fit to gift them with a house elf yesterday who he didn't trust even as Taffy went on about the Griffiths family. And then there was the nanny who he didn't quite like the sight of, but he would deal with that if he needed to. Then there was the minor detail that Cecelia had been murdered adding another variable to the evening. At the first two had actually proven useful in helping to set up for the dinner, the nanny keeping Jason entertained and Taffy cleaning and preparing the meal.

Not that any of that mattered. No, this whole evening was engineered with the sole intent of finding the appropriate test subject. Surely, there were ethics against that sort of thing, but Eli was generally under the impression that ethics were created to protect men who were too afraid to take the leap and do what had to be done.

Tonight what had to be done involved abusing a friendship he had since Hogwarts, but it was not without cause. Eli needed to know how this worked, he needed as much data as possible on the magic being used around Pandora's memories if ever hoped to not only create a working theory, but actually find application. Glancing at the clock in his study, he saw it was quickly approaching five o'clock and he needed to be finished before then in case anyone had the audacity to arrive early.

So, he put away his work, carefully transferring his recreated Pandora memory into a vial and onto his person for later use before reestablishing the wards on this room to ensure it remained out of bounds. It wouldn't do to have people messing with his things - although then there would be another reason to have to kill them and he was going to have to talk to Samara about that idea - although perhaps later. Right now, he needed to switch into something more like a personable mode so he could get through the niceties and actually have the space needed for the real work.

"Well thank you both and yes, I suppose you are right, Tracey, the less excitement tonight we might all be the better for all things considered." Samara took a sip from her glass and looked around the room once, wondering where Jason was because she knew that he would want to say hello to Theodore at least once. "I know that Jase is around here somewhere with Taffy. He will certainly want to say hello to you, Theodore, before you leave."

It was difficult to deal with Theodore mentioning her mother, especially because she was still not certain how she felt about it. But she had been replying to these all day so she knew what she was supposed to do. She took a deep breath, held a straight mouth and said, "Thank you, dear. It's been quite a shock and while I did consider canceling the party, I decided that spending my time with friends and family was really the best thing to do at a time like this. My brother and friends would have come anyhow so really it wouldn't have been much different." It was a lie, but a very good one. And now that the unfortunate incidents had been brought up, she was now in the position to have to mention it to Tracey. "My condolences for your loss as well, Tracey. I am glad that you have Theodore at your side though."

"I'll be sure to keep an eye out for him this evening then," Theodore said in response to Samara's comment about Jase. "It sounds like he is enjoying himself though."

"I am glad that you are able to find comfort in others then," he said in response, still not wholly believing that was possible. Maybe it was that he was still stuck in his own mind, his own perspective. But his thought was soon drawn from that when he considered what she said next.

He was mostly surprised in a way how mate-ish it sounded to be at someone's side. That idea wasn't really like him, but he wasn't going to deny that he won't offer any support to his friends. He wondered if she would've said that if he happened to be a female friend instead.

Tracey hadn't caught sight of Samara's son yet, but she was surprised that Theodore met him, and apparently knew him well enough for him to say hello to him. For some reason, Tracey couldn't imagine Theodore getting along with children, but stranger things had happened.

"Thank you Samara. Same to you," Tracey said nodding in Samara's direction for the condolences. She had to smile though, at the mention of Theodore being by her side. "Theodore has been a great help, letting me stay with him during my recovery."

"I am glad to hear that he has opened his home to you. Not many would do that, even at a troubling time like this. I am just glad to see you have such a support system. If I did not have my husband and son I am not sure where I would be, honestly." She said and while she may not have been terribly truthful and all that she said, the last bit was absolutely the truth.

Jason came running to her side and noticed Theodore and a big smile crossed his face. "Theodore, hullo! Did you hear? We got a house elf, his name is Taffy! I've never had a house elf before; he's really nice - and he knows my dad's family! Did you have a house elf when you were little?"

"Jason, don't be rude. This is Tracey Davis, she is a guest of Theodore's this evening." Samara said, placing a hand on her son's shoulder.

Jason faced the blond woman and bowed, saying, "Good evening, Ms. Davis. I'm Jason Chambers and Theodore is my friend too; it's a pleasure to meet you."

Theodore again, found it troubling that Samara compared her situation with her husband and son with Tracey's. But he tried to equate that to trying to find a way to describe it in her own world. Maybe.

Theodore smiled at Jason when he did approach. It was a break from the complexity of adult interaction, and it reminded him of his thoughts from the other day around mother-son interactions.

"No--I haven't heard, but thank you for sharing the news. No, our family wasn't as fortunate to have one." His was a family that came into new money, after all.

Even if Theodore didn't see it that way, but Tracey didn't have much to go on for family these days. Just Zacharias since Tracey avoided her own mother. Theodore was her friend and the only real support system she had, wither he liked it or not.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too Jason," Tracey said giving the little boy a smile, and she was amused at how he chatted to Theodore and called him his friend. Apparently Theodore did have a way with kids.
