Characters: Lavender Brown, the Brown family, Michael Corner; later Agatha Bole & Fenrir Greyback
Setting: Lavender's home, Eastbourne, 14 November 2003, 12:14pm
Rating: PG-13 for language and imagery
Summary: Checking on Lavender after the news, being surprised by Greyback.

Michael had had a pretty shitty morning overall. With Greyback breaking out which he knew would set Lavender on edge (and was obviously not good for any of them - not just Lavender), he wanted to do his best to make sure she was at least not losing her mind about all of this. She probably didn't feel safe at all and even if her flat was back in order, was she going to move back into it? He had no idea, but he had a feeling it probably was a no.

But besides that, he had the potions mucking people's minds up. Apparently instead of helping it was making the nightmares even worse for them which was both mind boggling and ridiculous at the same time. But most of all, it meant that Michael had fucked up royally and ruined things for his friends. He should have anticipated something like this happening, having the knowledge of potions that he did, but he was so keen on helping these people that he overlooked some of the most important things he should have done.

So he wasn't in the best of moods when he apparated to Eastbourne, but he had to try his best to comfort Lavender right now. He walked out of the wood behind their house and to the front door, knocking firmly on the front door and doing his best to put a smile on his face for Lavender and her family that he might be talking to on the way. Her needs were a bit more than his at the moment and he wanted to make sure he kept her from taking anymore of the potion while he was there anyhow.

"It's him." There was no way it couldn't be him. Her heart was beating heavy in her chest and she was trying to keep it together. Don't do anything foolish, and just moments before she did promise. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled a stick of bubblegum from the package. Hopefully Agatha Bole hadn't been lying about how the system would work and reinforcements with the appropriate level of training would be here soon.

Lavender left the rest of the packet and the pulled stick in her pocket. Instead she slid her wand out, grip sure and ready to apparate out of there as soon as Bailey and Baby Girl were in touching distance.

The problem was that her actions and the response from Greyback was enough for the dogs to interpret the two men as a threat. Baby Girl sneered, baring her teeth as she ran toward the two men, barking louder and ready to defend her human.

Fenrir noticed the subtle change in them and how wands were reached for as the dogs drew closer to the couple. He smiled and looked at Torolf. "I think they've figured it out, I doubt we have much time now." Of course, that was when he noticed a change in the barks of the dogs, and glanced over.

One of the dogs had changed course and was charging them, challenging them in an attempt to protect its humans. How precious, he thought. "Why don't we teach the girl a lesson. It's a while before the moon, she should understand that she will be untouched until then, but everyone around her is fair game, and will be targetted." Torolf nodded and raised his wand towards the dog, but Fenrir stopped him for a moment. "Don't kill it out right, I want the Brown girl to hear the thing die in agony."

Torolf swung his arm in a slashing motion in front of him at the dog, and a loud, agonizing yelp rang through the air in response as the animal crashed into the sand, a red spray errupting from where the spell hit all down her left side from neck to tail. It was crying where it fell, which only made Fenrir smile wider. He clapped Torolf on the shoulder. "Well done." Now he waited to hear the girl's agony in response to what he was sure she had seen perfectly well.

Agatha had been looking into some of the files she and Duncan had kept on Greyback and his pack back in the day when she felt a sharp, burning sensation in her pocket that she immediately identified as the lighter. She dropped the file on her desk without a second thought, grabbed her wand, and spoke the keyword that would activate the locating spell.

The next thing she knew, she was on a long, flat beach standing over a couple that looked like they'd just been interrupted from a snogging session. She heard a yelp and immediately turned in that direction to see two men (one of whose shape was so familiar she would know it in her sleep), and one dying dog.

Greyback.

"And here I thought you didn't kill your own kind!" she shouted as she aimed her wand and shot out a stupefy without hesitation, then set in the werewolf's direction in a run.

As Baby Girl went down, Lavender but back the 'no' she wanted to yell. It was too late for that and the damage was already done. Giving anything more would be playing into what they wanted. Bailey immediately stopped barking and went right over to Baby Girl, trying to figure out what was happening.

Something snapped in her just then and all she wanted to do was hurt him - hurt him like he was making her hurt, like he had already hurt her. As she jerked to get up, Lavender felt Michael hold her tighter. With a strangled sound coming from her throat, she hurled a powerful diffindo toward the man with the wand. It might have been a few years since she had to use it, but she certainly had the proper intent and emotion behind the spell to make it count.

The one thing was clear, Lavender Brown was sick of being the victim and she wasn't going to take it anymore.

Fenrir laughed loudly as he saw the dog go down and the girl react to it. Maybe she didn't scream the way he wanted, but the fire was there, he'd stoked it, so as to make it all the more fun for him. And then that Auror appeared, how she knew where he was, he wasn't sure, but he was fairly certain the Brown girl was responsible for her being there. He recognized her though, from all those years ago, when she and her partner had chased him. He was fairly certain said partner wasn't alive anymore, and when he heard what she shouted at him, he couldn't help but shout back.

"How's that partner of yours?" followed by a wicked laugh. Then the hexes were flying in their direction, and though Torolf managed to shoot off a few of his own, Fenrir roughly grabbed his shoulder and pulled him away. "Let's get home." A second later, they had snapped off of that beach, leaving chaos in their wake.

"He's wishing he were alive so he could kick your arse all over again, you sonofabitch!"

She heard the diffindo and watched out for it as she ran, the only thing keeping her from yelling back at the girl was the wish to catch Greyback. Surprisingly, the man with Greyback shot of spells - either just a wizard, or a wizard turned werewolf then - and she shot a few of her own until, much to her disappointment, they disappeared, having Apparated away.

"Fuck!!!!!" she yelled as she came to where they'd been standing. "Mother-fucking cock-sucking whore-mongering shit-eating mongrels!!!!" As if to emphsize her point, she kicked at the sand as if it was responsible for the pair's disappearance.

Michael held fast to Lavender, making sure that she did not run after the auror toward Greyback and the other werewolf (if that's what he was) with him. But it wouldn't matter because they were disapparating and once again Greyback was getting away, ready to come back and terrorise Lavender whenever he felt like it. Just fucking perfect.

He stood up and held Lavender to him. "Hey..." he said, but he wasn't really sure what else to say. She'd just watched her dog being murdered in front of her. What else was Greyback going to do before they could get ahold of him again? Why did he need to come after her to begin with? Michael rubbed her back a bit.

"No," she shouted as the two of them disapprated. It all happened so quickly and she was still angry. It still hurt. Only now it had no where to be directed, Auror Bole was cursing up a storm and..."Oh God."

Lavender pushed Michael away. She couldn't be held right now. She didn't want to be comforted, not when Baby Girl was dying just a few feet off. The anger tumbled just slightly into desperation as she scrambled across the beach to kneel as Baby Girl's side. Bailey had laid down next his fellow dog, whimpering lightly as if to provide some sort of comfort.

She quickly pulled off her jacket. "He doesn't get this too." Lavender felt for the deepest part pf the wound and pressed the jacket to apply some pressure and get the bleeding to stop. "Come on." There was too much blood, some part of her knew that, but it didn't matter. "There's a spell for this. I know there's a spell for this, there has to be as spell for this." She was unwinding just a little bit. It didn't matter that Baby Girl was probably too far gone, she had to do something. "Baby Girl, please don't die."

Agatha wasn't ignoring the other two per se, but she was focused on Greyback's disappeareance. She spun a pair of spells to try and look for clues of any sort.

There! A small pile of dirt resembling something that had been embedded in the tracks on the underside of a pair of shoes, and another spell quickly confirmed what she'd suspected all day - the Forbidden Forest.

The one place she'd be a fool to go into alone without backup or accurate, up-to-date information.

With a sigh, she turned back to the other two and saw the look on Brown's face as she tried to stop the dog's bleeding. She hated not knowing how to act, but what could she do?

"Are either of you injured?" she asked the boy, figuring he was less emotional at the moment and could answer her question without falling to pieces.

Michael sighed at Lavender's reaction to Baby Girl bleeding on the beach, knowing full well that there was no way that the dog was still alive. He didn't want Lavender to do this to herself, but he knew that if it was him in her place he'd do the same. He made his way to the two women and looked at the auror when she addressed him, shaking his head slowly. "We're fine. They were just standing there when I first saw them and then she triggered the SOS when Baby Girl started after them..."

Michael leaned down next to Lavender and put his hand on her shoulder. "Lav," he said, and he ran his hand down her arm and covered her hand with his. "Lavender c'mere. There's nothing we can do, love, I'm so sorry." He knew she didn't want to hear it and he knew she'd be angry with him but he didn't want her to torture herself like this. Finally he tugged her up, ignoring her protests, and pulled her to him, not giving her the leeway to pull away from him this time round. "I'm so sorry, love," he repeated and ran his hand over her hair and kissed the top of her head.

She fought as he pulled her away from Baby Girl, working herself into a frenzy of protest because at least that was something. If she stopped she was going to start crying again and she didn't want to dissolve into that yet. Yes, it could have been worse, it could have been Michael, but that knowledge didn't make it hurt any less.

Instead, she just clung onto Michael, mentally willing him never to die on her because that would be much too much. "He just-" she started, but never got to finish. One last flare of anger building up until she slammed her fist into Michael's arm. After that she physically deflated a little, her dog was dead, Greyback was gone - there wasn't really anything to fight against.

Swallowing in a noble effort to stop the inevitable degrade into the next state of being, she looked over at Agatha. "Did you get something? Can you track him? Anything?" It would undo what had happened, but if she could assign it some sense of meaning maybe it wouldn't be as bad.

She stood by, helpless to do anything for Brown aside from staying on high alert in case Greyback came back.

"I got confirmation that he's back in the Forbidden Forest." It probably wasn't what the girl wanted to hear, but it was something. "I'd suspected, but now I know. It's a big forest, but if you know where to look, you're half-way there."

She hoped that sounded encouraging.

"And, we know the signal works. Good job on getting me here right away. If he hadn't had a wizard working with him, I'd have caught the bastard. Next time, he's going down."

It was a promise.

Lavender's fist hitting his arm didn't really even phase him at this point. He was used to that sort of thing from her and in this situation she certainly had the right to do it. Michael nodded, even though the auror wasn't talking to him necessarily. At least they knew where Greyback was holed up so they could zone in on him better. However he also hoped that it didn't give Lavender any ideas to go after him either. He wasn't quite sure what Lavender was thinking right now.

He still didn't know who the auror was and he figured he should introduce himself and thank her for her help since Lavender had told him about her from their meeting this morning. "Yeah, thanks for giving it to her; I guess you are the auror who is going after him? I'm Michael Corner, by the way. I'm a...friend," he stumbled a bit on his description of himself, not really sure what he should be telling people he was to Lavender.

It might not have been much, but she hadn't been particularly hopeful she just needed something. Lavender nodded, not entirely sold on the next time promise, but she didn't say anything. She didn't even say anything when Michael introduced himself as her friend - although the pause between the word was more telling. They were friends, but they were more than that regardless of if it was labelled or not. The feelings were still there, she still clung to him.

"I should call my mum or something, we need to get-" She paused. Matthew and Jessica were probably still there. And Lavender didn't have it in her to watch them break down over Baby Girl, not when she was just barely holding it together and not with the way she had stormed out of the house earlier.

"Is there anything else? That we can do or that you need?" Lavender needed this part to be over, she could be strong, but she also needed to breakdown and start to process everything again.

She looked at Michael and nodded. Yes, she'd had 'friends' like him before, including her former partner. "Auror Agatha Bole," she replied, not making an attempt to shake hands as he obviously had his hands full.

"What I need is for you to let me escort you home so I can do a proper check of the premises to make sure it's safe and that there are no tracking charms in place." She almost left it at that but she added more, anticipating potential protests. "Yes, I'm certain the two of you are more than competent, but we Aurors have a bit of extra training in this area. I promise, I'll be quick but thorough."
