michael corner is reluctantly growing up ([info]mlcorner) wrote in [info]pandorarpg,

Characters: Lavender Brown, the Brown family, Michael Corner; later Agatha Bole & Fenrir Greyback
Setting: Lavender's home, Eastbourne, 14 November 2003, 12:14pm
Rating: PG-13 for language and imagery
Summary: Checking on Lavender after the news, being surprised by Greyback.

Michael had had a pretty shitty morning overall. With Greyback breaking out which he knew would set Lavender on edge (and was obviously not good for any of them - not just Lavender), he wanted to do his best to make sure she was at least not losing her mind about all of this. She probably didn't feel safe at all and even if her flat was back in order, was she going to move back into it? He had no idea, but he had a feeling it probably was a no.

But besides that, he had the potions mucking people's minds up. Apparently instead of helping it was making the nightmares even worse for them which was both mind boggling and ridiculous at the same time. But most of all, it meant that Michael had fucked up royally and ruined things for his friends. He should have anticipated something like this happening, having the knowledge of potions that he did, but he was so keen on helping these people that he overlooked some of the most important things he should have done.

So he wasn't in the best of moods when he apparated to Eastbourne, but he had to try his best to comfort Lavender right now. He walked out of the wood behind their house and to the front door, knocking firmly on the front door and doing his best to put a smile on his face for Lavender and her family that he might be talking to on the way. Her needs were a bit more than his at the moment and he wanted to make sure he kept her from taking anymore of the potion while he was there anyhow.

Sylvia considered herself a patient woman. She regularly dealt with egos of stage actors, costume designers, dressers, stage crew, technicians, and raising three girls who didn't always get along - especially how their age differences had left Lavender out. And Lavender was troubled, so much that she didn't always know what to do. However, the brief encounter with Lavender had with Libby when she came over to drop off Matthew and Jessica hadn't helped anything. Those two never got along.

Still, even that had blown over by late morning when Matthew and Jessica drew Lavender back out of her room to color with them. Sylvia had thought it was going well as she started working on lunch. Despite whatever issues Lavender had, she was always good with her niece and nephew or really any of the younger children she came in contact with. It was exactly the sort of thing that made a mother's heart hurt.

It had been going well until noise erupted in the other room and Lavender quite loudly announced. "I think I need to go walk the dogs," with that tremor in her voice that made it clear she was just barely keeping it together. Lavender's outburst was some sort of signal for the other two to start fighting to the point where Jessica started crying after Matthew threw a crayon at her. Then in the middle of damage control, with the grandchildren first, there was a knock at the door.

Sighing, Sylvia scooped up Jessica and went to go answer the door. Before opening the door, she peeked out to see who was there. While they had never properly met, she had seen photographs of Michael Corner and he was certainly a welcome sight. "Michael," she said, "Please come in, I'm afraid you've caught us in a bit of excitement."

In the back of the house came Lavender's voice not so calmly saying, 'I just can't do this right now,' which apparently was enough to cause Matthew to burst into hysterics. There would be no rest today, not that she was overly hopeful.

"And this is Jessica, my granddaughter," she said, shifting the girl in her arms so that she might be handed off to Michael. "I really don't normally greet my guests this way, but would mind taking her for a moment so I can go see great tragedy has now been unleashed upon my home?" Despite it being a tough situations, she hadn't lost her humor because it helped to deal with the tension.

Michael was not exactly expecting to be handed a child but he didn't particularly mind all that much. Children reminded him of Amanda Claire and he always loved them, regardless of the fact that if she hadn't have died, she wouldn't be a child anymore. He could only remember her as she was when she passed away now, so she was forever a child in his heart. "Sure, that's fine," Michael replied and took the girl named Jessica from Lavender's mom.

Michael adjusted the girl on his hip. "Hello Jessica, I'm Michael. I'm a friend of Lavender's. I went to school with her," he said, smiling at the small girl. He had always had an eye for girls more than boys, but that was probably because of his sister. Knowing his brother, James would probably have kids long before Michael ever did, so at least he'd have a niece or nephew to play with soon enough. Michael extended his hand to her so she could shake it. "What is your favourite thing to do?" he asked, wandering around the entrance of the house a bit.

Jessica stared at him for a long moment, seemingly not phased by being handed off to a stranger. She was being held, he was smiling and smelled nice, plus grammy had handed her over and grammy always knew best. "Color," she said quietly. "But Wavender got upset at some of our pictures." Most of which were still on the family room table not far away.

Elsewhere in the house, Sylvia was caught between an upset six year old who honestly thought he was trying to help and a twenty-three year old who was scared and obviously freaked out about something, but was still acting like a toddler. "Lavender, lovely, you need to calm down. I can't help you if I don't know what's happening." Far too many times had Sylvia been in this very position and her youngest daughter was still just as stubborn. "And if I can't help you then, could you at least not be rude because your friend Michael is here to see you."

There was a long pause and a few more slamming wardrobe doors and drawers for good measure before she pulled open her bedroom door with more force than necessary. However, that even started to get the two dogs riled up, which was just what they needed to add to the mix. "What do you mean Michael is here?" Her tone was hushed and frantic, not unlike how she presented herself. Although she was fully dressed now and ready to go out because this whole house, her whole life just felt suffocating.

Lavender crossed her arms over her chest, only just barely in defiance, mostly she was shielding herself. With a long sigh she started down the hall to see if Michael actually was in her house - not that she knew how she felt about that, especially with the way her mother was throwing around the word friend.

Michael nodded and grinned. "I like to colour too. What's your favourite thing to colour?" he asked her before she added the bit about Lavender. He wondered what the pictures might have been that would have made her upset but he didn't want to get into that with the girl so he didn't ask her about it.

He could hear Lavender a few times from the other room but he wasn't going to go in there uninvited so he wandered around in the front room with Jessica on his hip for a bit, looking around at pictures. "Jessica, do you know how to play pat-a-cake?" Michael asked her suddenly and sat her down on the floor and kneeled next to her. He wanted to try and distract her from whatever was going on and also himself because really, he could use it. He held up both his hands for her to hit and smiled, thinking of his sister again. It had been fourteen years now and he could still picture her face easily enough when he closed his eyes.

Getting closer to the front of the house she heard someone, probably Michael, playing pat-a-cake with Jessica. That was good, they were fine, and suddenly her plans changed. Rather than heading into the living room, Lavender stopped at the mud room, off the kitchen, to go ahead with her original plan. She wanted to get out of here. Of course her mother wasn't fat behind.

"Lavender, what are you doing?" Bailey and Baby Girl were sitting in the kitchen watching the whole ordeal unfold in front of them.

"What does it look like I'm doing, mother?" She said rummaging through the stuff in the mud room looking for the second lead. And if a few smaller items went flying toward her mother, well, it was purely accidental. Finally she found what she needed and started to clip the dogs to the leads, one after the other.

"It looks like you're seven years old again and trying to run away from home, but at least then you were smart enough to back a bag."

Lavender turned around pulling sharply on the leads, causing Bailey to start yipping. "Are you joking? You must be --" she paused seeing Matthew again and her whole stomach just feeling sick. Why had she saw that stupid picture? It took a bad day and just made it so much worse. She opened the back door and the dogs quickly shuffled outside ready for the escape as well. "I am going out," she said loudly so that Michael might hear in the other room, "With my dogs, and if Michael is here - well, he can make up his own mind about what he wants to do." Her words were quite spectacularly timed with the mud room door slamming shut behind her.

Michael slowly patted his hands against the small girl's and then against his thighs and back again, reciting the accompanying song he had learned a long time ago. He wondered off-handedly if Lavender enjoyed this game with her niece and nephew because she actually baked, but then he heard some commotion and Lavender's voice from the other room and looked up, still moving his hands in time with Jessica's.

When he heard the door slam he sighed. "I'm sorry Lavender got upset, Jessica, but you know she's not upset with you, yeah? She's had a scary morning," Michael said and he picked her back up again, going in search of Lavender's mother now, following the sound of where Lavender's voice had been. When he found Sylvia there was also Matthew around. He lowered Jessica down from his hip so he could kneel down in front of the boy he had yet to meet until now and held out his hand. "Hi there, I'm Michael, I'm Lavender's friend. Sorry I haven't been able to talk to you yet. Lavender's not having a good day so if she wasn't very nice, don't think she's cross with you, okay? If anything it's usually my fault that she's angry so you can just blame me." Michael grinned crookedly and then stood up.

He looked at Sylvia again. "Er, Mrs. Brown do you mind if I-" and he motioned toward the side of the house rather generally, not really wanting to go into things in front of the kids.

Jessica's brow furrowed at the commotion in the kitchen, not really liking all of the yelling an not entirely sure what to make of it. "Matthew had a scary morning too," she said quietly as Michael picked her up to see what was going on. When she got there and saw that grammy's arms were open, she went right over to her and calmly waited to be picked up, so she could better see everything.

In the kitchen, Matthew was trying to put on his big boy face, especially now that there was company. Really, he just looked tired, pulling quite the face at Michael's explanation. "I just wanted to talk to her because she was upset over my picture. And I didn't even really mean to draw it. I was drawing and I drew that. And I know mum doesn't think Lavender is smart, but I think she knows something, but she won't talk to me." He might have been a King in name, but how he was acting or rather talking, there was no doubt this boy was a Brown by blood.

"Alright," said Sylvia suddenly. "Why don't you two go get washed up for lunch and I'm sure Michael here will go talk to Lavender and make sure everything is okay." Normally, it was something she would do after giving Lavender a few minutes to have her little tantrum, but today she had other children to look after. So, it was good that Michael was here to fill that role.

"So, it was only a one time thing?" Not that she had really put much hope into it when she took it or that it would be a permanent solution. It had nothing to do with her faith in his ability, but more with the universe set on making her suffer. Lavender just hated seeing him suffer along with her. "Hey," she said, turning into him for another pause in their walk.

"You're not an idiot, in fact you're like one of the only people actually doing something to help. You gave us one night free of it and that's something." She reached for his hand, intertwining their fingers. Apparently, the trick to controlling the falling apart and the crazy was about giving her something else to worry about because then she could ignore her own problems just a little bit.

"No one else has done that or even tried and-" she shook her head, not wanting to finish that thought because while she might have been free of the full force of the nightmare not everyone was and she still didn't know what to do with that knowledge.

"I guess. I mean, I can still work on it but without really know what the magic is that is surrounding those memories it is almost impossible for me to know how to alter the potions to get them to work right. And I don't really want to risk it anymore considering what just happened the second time for everyone. Which means all my other ideas are pretty much null and void too. I can't risk mucking with anyone's head like that again."

Michael could probably go on about this for a while. He was really, really angry with himself for how this had turned out and he was not really listening to anyone tell him otherwise, especially when he could see the terror it had caused Anthony this morning by the way that first owl had come to him. Even with her hand in his and there being something to center himself on, it didn't change the facts staring him in the face. "I gave some people one night free of it...and then I gave some another night of something even more terrible than what they had been experiencing before. So to be honest, I think it sort of cancels itself out if we're going to keep score of what I have done to try and help." His voice couldn't drip with any more sarcasm over the word 'help' if he tried.

And he knew he wasn't the only one trying to help. Maybe he had been the first to produce some sort of tangible product, but look how well it had gone over? It was apparently best not to even try if all he was going to do was ruin things for his friends he was trying to assist. "I think I should stick to my secretarial duties where I am less likely to cause anyone harm by brandishing a quill."

"Yeah, Michael, please keep writing things down and just giving up." Although the words might be a little harsh, the tone was neutral. Lavender dealing with him the same way her mother often dealt with her - by agreeing and point out how that line of thought was ridiculous. In some ways it was just proof they were even more alike. "That seems like the far better option."

And then just in case he understand what she was trying to say she nudged him with her elbow. "Besides, at least this way we can be outcasts and disliked together." Because sometimes they had ideas that they didn't want to keep to themselves because it could actually help. And it kind of helped to know that someone might be in the hole along with her - especially if that person was Michael.

"But, honestly, Michael, a night of the world's worst nightmare is probably better than actually being tortured and killed." It wasn't quite a sort of clarity of peace with her lot in life, because every bit of it was still scary and horrible. Still, it was good to have something else - to be able to at least know to where to start looking for some sort of hope.

Michael chewed on the inside of his mouth when Lavender snarked at him, not really replying right away because he was fairly used to this sort of retort from her by now and it didn't bother him all that much. She just didn't seem to understand that what she was saying felt true to him - it did feel like the better option. "I'm not giving up, Lav, but I'm not going to put people in that sort of position again. It's awful...I thought I could help and all I ended up doing was causing people more pain than they were already getting. They were better off before they tried the potion. I think not mucking about with potions and these memories is the better option right now."

But then she was saying this weird thing that despite everything was sort of funny to him. He felt a smile tugging at his lips and he shook his head at her. "You-" but there wasn't anything else to say about her. She was who she was and he liked her that way. He found himself leaning forward, pressing his forehead against hers for a moment before kissing her on the lips briefly.

He pulled on her hand and started to walk again. "I know that, but we've no guarantee that anyone is going to live or die any day of the week, Lav. I'm not going to use that as a measurement to say 'Well, you could also be dead so this is definitely the less evil option! You should be thanking me!' I mean, really."

As they started walking, she stayed close to him, not sure what to say. Well, that wasn't true, she knew what to say, she just wasn't sure she wanted to say it. Because the things she was thinking about, well, they weren't particularly good things and she didn't want to make him hurt anymore because he was already upset over the potion. And it was all just sort of messy.

Still, she had to say it. She couldn't not say it, that was part of who she was too and he had asked. "Matthew, my nephew, he's having the not-nightmares," she said finally. "That was what was in his drawing." A horrible picture of a woman with bright red hair and she just knew, but she still asked. Lavender could handle having the nightmares, she knew about suffering and she could endure it.

"God, Michael, he's six years old. He hasn't even started yet." Her voice broke just a little then, all those cracks showing, reminding them both of what she would never forget. "So, I'd have dozens of worse nights if it meant we were even a little bit closer to figuring out what's going on and finding a way to make it stop."

Michael squeezed her hand involuntarily when she told him about Matthew. It wasn't what he'd expected to hear and it certainly hadn't been something he'd noticed when he'd talked to the boy. But then again, how the hell was he supposed to notice it? He just hated all of this, every single day got more difficult.

"Lavender...I'm sorry. I had no idea. That's not - it's so fucked up. This isn't fair. He doesn't deserve-" and suddenly Michael was inside his own mind, replaying a conversation he'd had with his brother a couple of days ago.

"Could you just come for dinner on Friday, Mike? It's really not a big deal - I don't know why there has to be an occasion." James said, sighing that familiar sigh he had that was reserved for Michael when he was getting frustrated.

"Anytime I am being asked to go to dinner at Mum and Dad's it is definitely an occasion. And I think bribery should be involved to really convince me to put up with Mum's nattering and Dad's incessant talk about the 'interwebs'."

"Just come, will you? We haven't had a family dinner in a while, yeah? Mum would like it of us."

He should have known then. Why hadn't he seen it? He had been so preoccupied with making the potion and dealing with Anthony and Lavender that he had not even considered the idea that anyone in his family could be affected. But - "Fuck!" he randomly blurted out and he realised now that he was clenching Lavender's hand like a vice. He loosened his hold and said, "Sorry. Sorry, I just - it's James. He didn't tell me, but I think he might be having them too."

Fenrir had spent about an hour planning this excursion before actually setting plans in motion. He had to make sure someone looked after the girl that he could trust, so she wouldn't be torn to shreds while he was gone. Thankfully, he still had 2 members of his pack he knew were loyal to a fault and he could entrust with the task. He left one with the girl, not bothering to explain to her what he was doing before he left her alone with the stranger. He wasn't her baby sitter after all, she was his captive, she hadn't earned being filled in on pertinant information. The other pack mate, Torolf, who was a wizard before being changed, was going with him in search of his priority unfinished business.

Torolf had already been on a recon mission early that morning to learn of the Brown girl's current wereabouts, now he and Fenrir were going to start their stalking of her. It would be a while before the full moon and he could change her, or kill her, whichever. So until then he decided he could have his fun fucking with her, keeping her paranoid and terrified. Besides, he was hoping she would lead him straight to people she cared about that he could kill to really mess with her.

One sickening apparition later, they were standing in a quiet neighborhood, and after a moment where Fenrir reestablished his equilibrium, Torolf lead him to the girl's family's house. They stayed out of sight, simply watching the house. Of course, not too long later they were rewarded when the Brown girl came storming out of the house with two dogs, and another bloke when hurrying after her. He and Torolf followed them, not too closely, until they reached the beach, where it became very clear very quickly that this bloke was indeed someone important to the Brown girl.

"You'll have to find out who he is, I'll want to have a nice personal conversation with him in the not too distant future," Fenrir said to Torolf, who nodded in response. They stayed a safe distance away, their vastly superior eye sight giving them enough of a view without being immediately obvious to the other two, but Fenrir could not resist being at least slightly noticed. They were far enough away that if they wandered out onto the beach a bit and just stood there, the girl would probably panic without knowing for sure if it was him. He did have a rather impossing and large figure, enough to seem menecing from even this distance. "What do you say to stirring up some trouble? You can always get us back to the pack quickly." Fenrir said with a devious smile.

"After you," Torolf responded, following his line of thought. The two of them wandered out into view and stood as if conversing secretly while staring at the couple down the beach from them.

Michael kissed her back, practically sighing against her lips. When he pulled back he opened his eyes and froze, arm reflexively squeezing against her waist. It wasn't as if the beach was private, he knew, but there hadn't been anyone standing there before he closed his eyes and it worried him, especially since they were looking at them. They were too far away for Michael to see properly and while he could transform and see them perfectly, he didn't want to startle Lavender by doing so.

Bailey and Baby Girl were further down the beach and hadn't noticed the strangers yet, which is probably why they hadn't barked yet. If only Michael could get their attention without drawing attention to himself. He turned his head toward Lavender's ear and said quietly, "There are two men standing over there watching us. Don't look. We need to decide what we are going to do, Lav. I can't tell who they are. We might need to apparate...or I might need to transform..." He knew that both options had bad connotations. If they apparated they'd have to leave the dogs behind and if it was Greyback, he might kill them. If he transformed he wasn't sure how Lavender would react to it which was why he had never done so before in front of her.

Telling her not to look just made her want to look even more, especially as her whole body tensed. There was every chance it could have just been someone who knew her family was felt the need to talk about the boy Lavender Brown on the beach, but it didn't feel like that. And more importantly, that sort of talk would have been better suited five years ago and by women. There was also that weird sort of itch she felt like she knew who was there.

She let out an exhale, wrapping an arm just a little tighter around Michael. "Okay." With her other hand, she could easily get to both her wand and the packet of bubblegum - but what this was a bubblegum sort of situation. God, what to do? Don't look. He said don't look. The only thing she could see was her dogs, padding around in the surf looking like they were both ready to go for a swim.

If that itch was right, then her dogs would respond - and then all of them would need to make a quick exit. She kissed his neck, forcing herself to calm just a little at least on the surface, because there was nothing calm about this moment, and not give away they knew they were being watched. Truly nothing was safe anymore.

"Bailey, Baby Girl," she called sitting back up a little as to not be shouting next to Michael. "Leave it." And just like she knew they would, they came running back over to Lavender and Michael. Sure enough, once in range of the two men watching them, Baby Girl started barking, Bailey just a moment behind her.

Well that had worked well. He had seen the bloke stiffen as soon as he had been noticed. Of course that was after the sickening display of affection, really he half wanted to just end them right then and there, just to cause the most amount of pain possible. The dogs started running up the beach towards the couple, then noticed the two strangers down a ways and started barking at them. It was an annoying sound, but one of curiosity and perhaps a small bit of warning.

Fenrir let out a low, gutteral growl at the noise. He looked to Torolf. "Either of those mutts get too close, they're you're responsibility. You have better range than I do."

Torolf let out a small chuckle in response, getting his wand at the ready should it be needed, but the dogs seemed to be staying close to the couple for the time being. Fenrir continued to obviously stare at them, leaning closer to Torolf now and again to make it look like they were conversing, and Torolf let out a nasty, barking laugh at one point before also looking very pointedly at the couple. It seemed to be having the desired effect.

Michael knew that Lavender still had the bubblegum, but what if it wasn't Greyback? Would the aurors be angry? Or was it better to be safe than sorry in this situation? Michael would honestly rather just transform, but they could have wands on them and they could kill him just as easily the moment he transformed.

To be quite honest, he just didn't know what the best option was. They had the dogs with them now so they could disapparate easily enough, but should the aurors know that Greyback might possibly be around Lavender's house? "What should we do?"

"It's him." There was no way it couldn't be him. Her heart was beating heavy in her chest and she was trying to keep it together. Don't do anything foolish, and just moments before she did promise. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled a stick of bubblegum from the package. Hopefully Agatha Bole hadn't been lying about how the system would work and reinforcements with the appropriate level of training would be here soon.

Lavender left the rest of the packet and the pulled stick in her pocket. Instead she slid her wand out, grip sure and ready to apparate out of there as soon as Bailey and Baby Girl were in touching distance.

The problem was that her actions and the response from Greyback was enough for the dogs to interpret the two men as a threat. Baby Girl sneered, baring her teeth as she ran toward the two men, barking louder and ready to defend her human.

Michael and Lavender had gone a long way from her house so escorting them back would probably go better if they apparated back rather than walked. But they still had to get Bailey and also Baby Girl's body back to the house too. He looked at Lavender who was still hanging onto him since he had pulled her away from Baby Girl and he reflexively pulled her closer even though that was not what he was meaning to do in the first place.

"Right. It would be quicker to apparate as we're a ways away from the house now. We could gather the dogs and walk into the woods over there so we can do it without being seen," Michael said, pointing to a wooded area where Greyback and his crony had probably come out of in the first place. He looked down at the dog who was still wrapped in Lavender's jacket and he began to pull away from Lavender so that he could pick up the dog and carry her.

Lavender didn't loosen her grip on Michael, not ready to let go of him. However, they did have to get back to the house and someone was going to have to carry Baby Girl. As much as she didn't want to, it should be her. Baby Girl was her dog and she should be one. Also it would be easier than dealing a whimpering sad Bailey.

"Can you get Bailey instead?" She asked only then letting go of Michael. Lavender wasn't sure what was allowing her to keep it together this long - maybe she was all cried out, but she would take the small grace. "I'll grab...Baby Girl and then we'll go." Her words caught in her throat, but she still went forward to scoop up the dog - some 65 pounds wrapped in her jacket.

Agatha took another look around at the beach in concern. She hadn't known where she was before, only that she was close to Lavender, but from what Michael said, they were at least in the vicinity of the Browns' home. That meant Greyback knew where Lavender lived.

"This is near your home? Forget what I said earlier about the wards, you and your family should get away for a while. Do you have any family elsewhere you can visit?"

Michael looked concerned. He knew that Greyback was capable of some terrible things, like what they had just seen moments ago, but having to completely relocate just didn't seem fair, especially on such short notice. Would he really be back so soon to terrorise them again? He wasn't going to ask that question out loud.

He went down to where he and Lavender had been sitting and picked up the leads for Bailey and Baby Girl and returned to where Agatha and Lavender were standing, Bailey standing close to Lavender's feet. Michael leaned down and snapped the lead back to Bailey's collar but she did not seem very willing to walk on it just then so Michael bent down and picked her up too. He looked over at Lavender, waiting for her to answer the auror because he wasn't sure if her family did have somewhere else to go or not.

"I live in London. Or well, I normally live in London-" she was just sort of homeless at the moment following the break in incident last week. The fact that this auror was suggesting her family pack up and leave right now was almost too much to deal with. She was already hold her dead dog and now this?

"And like all of my family is here, in Eastbourne, we run a guesthouse. Except for like my uncle and aunt who are up in London for the bakery in Diagon." That made it worse. Those two businesses had supported the family and it might not be particularly busy tourist season, it was still income. "And I - I can't make those decisions, so we should just head back."

Before anyone else had any other things to drop on her, she started the few feet down the beach to where they could have better cover to apparate back home.

"Of course," Agatha replied tightly. She'd always seen things in rather straightforward terms - doing whatever was necessary to survive in one piece was always of utmost importance - and it always frustrated her whenever she encountered someone who was less clear about their priorities, at least the way she saw them.

"In the meantime, I'll make sure the wards are up to date. And keep that pack of Drooble's on you at all times."
