Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 13 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: marietta edgecombe, character: michael corner

Characters: Michael Corner, Marietta Edgecombe & Anthony Goldstein
Setting: Diagon Alley, Flourish and Blotts, 13 November 2003, 1:23pm
Rating: PG-13 for language probably
Summary: Chance run-in that will probably result in arguing and disgruntled ex-DA friendlies.

Since the Kissed were mostly getting cleaned up by now, Marietta found it a fine time to stroll about Diagon Alley to see the mess they might have made. It was interesting to see something you had been involved in creating chaos across the wizarding world. A lot of the store fronts had been torn to pieces and there were still body parts from them lying around the streets. Apparently the only way to stop them had been to rip them to pieces. How very noble of them; and they called themselves good, yet were okay with ripping apart defenseless bodies who had no brain or souls.

Marietta made her way into Flourish and Blotts which had made it out mostly unscathed it seemed. She wondered if they had any books that mentioned anything about Pandora and was searched through the stacks for anything Gellert Grindelwald when she saw one Anthony Goldstein in the shop as well. She never had much contact with him at the Ministry, but she knew that he was an Obliviator and also an enemy because of his current ties to Dumbledore's Army. Well, if they were current, but considering what was going on, she would not put it past them to not be. Maybe this would be a perfect chance to try and find out just that. Anthony was one of the quiet ones, she remembered back from their days at Hogwarts, though he always ran with Michael Corner who was a loud mouthed, foul creature and Terry Boot who was hard to remember much either way. Yes, Anthony was definitely better to get to when he was alone and Marietta was feeling quite good thanks to her Lady's triumph the past day.

She walked up to Anthony and pulled a random book from the shelf near him, flipping through the pages without actually paying them any mind. "Well hello, Anthony. How are you today? I hope this mess hasn't caused your department too much trouble." It was always better to start with something pleasant if you were fishing for information.

In light of the misunderstanding that he and Michael had just the day before, the idea of Marietta assuming that they were together just wasn't as amusing for Anthony as it might have been any other time - well, as it might have been once he got past the intial what of it. And, of course, there was also the fact that he didn't appreciate any of the things she'd said about Michael because they frankly were not true. She was just saying things and Michael was going to listen because Michael was currently being very stupid when it came to his own self-worth. Whether she knew it or not, Marietta had just used that.

"What - no, we are not shagging." He didn't feel it was necessary to mention that Anthony was not in the habit of shagging anyone, ever. "We're mates, and mates tend to spend time together on a regular basis. And also? You don't know the first thing about Michael. He's not an idiot, he's not a burden, and he's not dragging anyone down - never has been and never will be." He gave Michael a brief, very pointed look before glaring at Marietta again. There was more he wanted to say, but he really didn't want to give Marietta any more ammunition if he could avoid it.

Michael was not terribly surprised that Anthony stood up for him. That's what they generally did for one another, all things considered. But for him to say this to Marietta was fairly surprising to him, considering Marietta was a bit of a bitch and she could make most people quake and Anthony certainly wasn't the type to rise to talking back most of the time. But Michael could not deny that the things Marietta was saying were mostly true - he'd said them all himself before and to Anthony, no less. So it wasn't like Anthony hadn't heard them before.

He was a little amused about the shagging innuendo, but he wouldn't let Marietta know that because those sort of jokes were only allowed between him and his mates, not between him, his mate and some other bitch who only said them to be - well, a bitch. He just couldn't bring himself to really say anything to Marietta then because while he wouldn't stand for her berating his friend, well, saying these things about himself - he just didn't have the heart to disagree when he truly didn't disagree with her on them.

"No, no, not shagging. Of course not," Marietta parroted Anthony, shaking her head with a smirk. She looked at Michael and noticed that somehow he had nothing to say on any of this so it looked as if she had touched a nerve. Obviously not about the shagging - well maybe on the shagging, but she assumed it had more to do with the former than the latter. "So, Michael, nothing else to say? No barbaric comments? Why is that, I wonder? Your mate Anthony has plenty to say on the matter, but not you. Don't you agree with him? Or do you actually agree with...me?" She looked at Michael pointedly, arms crossed daintily over her chest.

Michael tried to glare at Marietta but he didn't seem to have any fire behind it. It looked like she had won this battle. "Anthony already knows what I think about it. As for you, it's not any of your business. You're just trying to wind me up and I'm not going to give you the pleasure."

Marietta laughed. "Please, Michael. You're about as tightly wound as you can get from the looks of you. If I say anything else you're going to pop like a bloody spring. You probably don't even need me to say anything, but here, let me do you the pleasure." She leaned a bit closer toward the two of them to lower her voice. "You and all your stupid DA members might as well give up because there is no way you're going to outsmart Pandora. This isn't the Dark Lord versus Harry Potter. There's no short cut way to stop her from getting what she wants and so long as you've got a memory inside your silly little heads," she pointed at Anthony's forehead, "your name is forever marked on that list. So just give up while you're ahead. There's nothing you can do."

Anthony was still as she spoke, the stony look on his face not wavering for even the slightest moment. Michael not even making much of an effort to deny Marietta's claims - and Anthony didn't care if he still believed it honestly (or that was the stance he was taking on it in this current moment because overall he cared a lot), he could have... lied or something - was disappointing, even if he might have expected as much, knowing him.

Somewhere, he was aware that he hadn't given Marietta any formal affirmation, and that she might have just been talking about the DA as a whole, but knowing personally that it still included him because he was having the nightmares and therefore most definitely happened to be on that list made him ignore logic. It didn't help that her last words pretty clearly expressed exactly what he was scared of underneath all the research - that nothing was going to work in the end and he was just biding his time until Pandora killed him. Or worse, that she'd try and Michael would make good on his promise. Either way, he didn't like the end result. And he didn't have enough positivity in him to he hopeful for an option C where everyone lived.
