Setting: Chambers home, 13 November 2003, 6:14pm
Rating: PG for swearing
Summary: Samara finds out her mother is dead - on her birthday.

Samara had to admit that she had definitely had better birthdays than this. She knew it wasn't going to be a particularly good year, considering she was already using her party as a ploy to insert an unwanted memory into one of her friends, but the onslaught of the attack by rampaging living inferi certainly didn't perk up her spirits any. Luckily she had not been out with Jason when the attacks had occurred so they had been tucked away safely at home but Eli had been in the Ministry when it all started and that worried her overmuch, not to mention Benji had to be out in the thick of it for the past day and a half until it was all settled and over with.

So far Benji was doing alright, last she'd heard from him. He was tired, but otherwise okay which was what mattered most. Samara turned to her fireplace as it roared to life, seeing her brother step out of it moments later. He had agreed to watch Jason for the evening so that Eli could take Samara out for her birthday. Why he was coming by the house when they had plans to bring Jason to Benji's flat so that he could relax at home, she did not know. Maybe they had had some miscommunication.

"Uncle Benji!" Jason came running into the living room to greet his uncle who looked even more tired than last Samara had seen him.

"Hey Jase," Benji replied, in a slightly less enthusiastic tone than he normally would. Samara could understand this, though even with a hard day Benji usually was still bright and cheerful when it came to his nephew. He gave him a hug and said, "Can you go play in your room for a bit? I need to talk to your mum."

Jason sighed. "Yeah alright," he replied and headed out of the room.

Samara raised an eyebrow at her brother. "What do you need to talk about? You know we were going to bring Jase to your flat, yeah?"

"Yeah. Mara...come sit down," Benji said and he gave his sister a look.

Samara knew this look, but what she didn't understand was why she was getting it from him just then. She slowly moved into the living room and sat down precariously on the sofa and Benji sat down next to her. He kept looking at her and she just didn't understand. "Benji, what's going on?"

"They've cleared things up in Hogsmeade. The mess from the Kissed and they found a-a body. It's Mother, Mara - Mother's been killed." Benji took Samara's hands in his own and squeezed them.

Samara stared at him, the words not really sinking in. She heard them, she could comprehend them, but she couldn't put them together and take their true significance because that would mean - "You can't be serious," she finally said, pulling her hands from her brother's and standing up. Things had been bad enough already without this. "This is some sort of joke, right?" She knew better; her brother was an idiot sometimes but he wouldn't make a joke like that. It just seemed like the only reasonable explanation right then.

"Samara..."

While her voice had been calm up until this point, almost uncomfortably so, she was beginning to unravel. She felt like something was pressing down on her chest now. Benji kept looking at her and she didn't know how to make him stop, though she considered briefly throwing something at him. "You're lying," she said and then suddenly she was screaming at him, "You're lying!"

Benji stood up and grabbed her by the shoulders. "Mara, calm down!"

She shook her head. "No, that's alright. I think I'm fine right here." Samara smirked at him and rubbed her nose against his cheek.

She didn't really expect him to just send them into the other room when they could have walked. Leave it to Eli to just take most unconventional way though. Samara looked at him and shook her head, sitting up on the desk to answer his earlier question. "Well my dear husband, it's my birthday so I could care less about your proclamations of better to give than receive. It's my day to receive, thank you very much." She grabbed him by the collar and pulled him toward her for another kiss.

That was of course the right answer. They both were, even the bit of surprise at his initiative was all exactly what he wanted from her. Of course, Eli would take anything she gave, but right now he felt she needed distraction. It wasn't a new place exactly, but it had been a while since they have been here before - after all, this sort of thing was how they got Jason.

He ripped away from the kiss, keeping close as he spoke. "Then I suppose it's a very good thing for the both of that I like to give." With a glint in his eye he pushed her back a bit more forcefully down against the desk. Eli quickly moved to fill the space. It was like it always was familiar with just a bit of edge. If Samara needed something to lose herself in, then he would not let her down.

If there was one thing that Samara ever treasured most about their sex life, it was that it was never boring. Regardless of having been with the same person for the past seven years, they always had ways of keeping things exciting and that was something she loved about Eli. Most people might not know it by looking at either of them, but they did know how to keep things fresh.

Samara breathed in deeply as he pushed her back, grinning at him. She kissed his chin and then his ear before nipping at it playfully. She wrapped her legs around his waist in an effort to draw his body closer to her. Samara grabbed at the center of his shirt with both hands and pulled it open, disregarding the buttons that held it closed which went flying across the room in all directions.

Later they would have to talk about this, figure out if the news changed their plans for the party tomorrow night. His opinion was that it would go on as planned, after all, it really wasn't about the party to start with - at least not entirely. The night was also about finding someone to drop a memory into and it would be a shame for all of that work to go to waste. The tone of the night might have to shift as to fit people's expectations, but it wouldn't be so out of line to want to be with friends in light of such news, even if Samara might not feel particularly close to her mother.

However, as his buttons went flying pulling him back more fully to the woman underneath him, those were thoughts for another time. There were just too many clothes and just like he had been impatient before, he was now too. Freeing one of his hands, he reached for his wand. There needed to be less clothes now and with a looping flick of his wand he could do just that.

It might have taken away some of the thrill or anticipation, but this wasn't about that. Right now was about want, possibly even need, with hands pressing just on the end of a bit too hard and a little teeth with those kisses for good measure. Every movement was one she would feel.
