Who: Theodore and Percy
What: Saving Percy from his curses
Where: Percy's flat
When: November 12, 15:30
Rating: Likely worksafe

Theodore made it promptly to his 3:30pm appointment at Percy Weasley's flat, a briefcase in tow with the usual tools, potions and books to get started. It has been awhile since he had received a request for service from someone had claimed to be cursed themselves, but he figured that it was just as good of a challenge as any. And in any case, seeing that there aren't many people who are willing to subject themselves to the degree of risk one assumes while working in this profession, he would be able to charge enough to even make a false-alarm visit worthwhile. Not as much as a real one, but enough.

Theodore had decreased his work hours over the past few days--taking up fewer contracts, especially the lower paying jobs involving the removal of magical creatures--due to Tracy's condition and had figured that it may continue for at least the next little while. A job like this should be worth a bit, once one factors in the difficulty of the job and desperation of the customer. Curses on oneself typically were very distressing. In a way he thought of the spots and 'dreams' being something similar to a curse, and had taken to investigating them in a similar way in his spare time--oftentimes the early hours after he's managed to gather himself after the dreams. Maybe it'd be about the spots and 'dreams'?

He mused over the changes in his habits and what would be required to make it work, as he knocked on the door of Percy's flat and waited for the response.

"Yes, at your service, Mr. Weasley," Theodore said, extending his hand, using his confident and professional airs that seemed to come easily and naturally. Perhaps it was something that had been ingrained through years of being with the sorts with whom it is natural...even if he didn't wish to completely identify with them.

"I'm sorry to hear that you've been affected by a curse," he added in his naturally quiet voice, as the door was shut behind him.

"Thank you," he replied, having shaken the young man's hand solidly.

"I hope you do not mind, but my flat is not as... private as it had been a few hours ago. Would you have any issue with speaking in my bedroom, or would that make you uncomfortable?"

His greatest fear at the moment was Ginny getting wind of what he had in mind, as she would either demand he speak with Bill, or try to dissuade him altogether.

An eyebrow arched slightly as Theodore tried to figure out what was going on with this man. The expression was quickly hidden with a rather neutral expression, as he was quite adept at hiding his thoughts. Theodore was observant enough to take note of the fact that Percy had looked him up and down before he entered the house, and now he wants to speak with him in his bedroom?

"If it would suit you, Mr. Weasley. The customer is always right, after all," he responded, with a shrug. If all else failed and it wasn't really a call for work, a good shag would help set things right after a rather difficult week. Theodore figured that he'd appraise the situation a bit further before potentially wrecking what could be a rather good contract.

Percy nodded, relieved the young man had acquiesced. He escorted Nott to the bedroom, closed the door, and cast a silencing spell.

"My apologies for the strangeness, but my sisted took it upon herself to move in with me this morning. As I stated in my owl, I wish to keep this discrete, especially from my family."

Thankfully, he was a very neat person and his room was immaculate. He took a chair from the side and placed it facting the bed, upon which he himself sat. He waved to the chair. "Please, have a seat. Is there something in particular you would like me to answer, or shall I begin with my suspicions?"

Well it appeared to be strictly business, but he still wondered why Weasley would want to keep something like this secret from his family. Then again, there were a number of people who would feel that it is best to hide their suffering from their loved ones--it wasn't a completely new phenomena.

"I think it would be helpful to first hear your suspicions, and then I can move onto more specific details. If you can start with the earliest incidents--and perhaps where or when you may have been cursed, it would be of assistance." He opened his suitcase and took out a Dictaquill and some paper. "Would you mind if I have notes taken?"

"Please, do so," Percy replied regarding the notes.

"I am not certain when I may have been cursed, it has simply been the natural conclusion upon looking back upon the last several years. Persons close to me have died, either those I have worked for, or persons I have recently reunited with. The first was Bartemius Crouch Sr. who was my superior in the Department of International Magical Cooperation. Following that, I worked for Minister Cornelius Fudge, who while not killed during his tenure was thrown out of office, and for all intents and purposes, suffered a professional death. After that was Minister Rufus Scrimgeour, who was murdered at the Ministry prior to the arrival of Minister Pius Thickness, who was in turn not murdered but sent to Azkaban for his role in the rise of You-Know-Who."

He let out a long exhale before continuing. "Then, at the Battle of Hogwarts, I had reunited with my family after an estrangement, and my brother Fred died in my presence. Most recently, I had been reunited this past Saturday with a former girlfriend, Miss Penelope Clearwater, whose murdered took place only days ago."

He looked down, crossing his legs primly and folding his hands over his knees. "I am not a superstitious man, Mister Nott, but I cannot ignore the pattern. Perhaps I was afflicted sometime prior to Mr. Crouch's death, during the Tri-Wizard tournament, or perhaps during the scuffle with Death Eaters during the Quidditch World Cup that summer. I unfortunately have no other information."

Theodore set the paper with the Dictaquill over it, and it had taken to making verbatim notes of the comments and story that Percy shared.

"That is a rather unfortunate series of events--I'm sorry," Theodore commented in as empathetic tone he could really commit himself to given that this was business.

"So you weren't aware of the specific time this curse had been initiated?" he asked. "Leaving it as something that may have been done while you were unaware, asleep--but not in a confrontational manner. Is there anyone in particular who may have performed such a curse or have reason to perform such a curse on you?"

Percy felt somewhat helpless in the face of so many questions he did not know the answer to, and simply shrugged stiffly.

"My name is Weasley, and I have worked for several high-profile politicians. I would say that the number of persons with sufficient cause would be numbered in the dozens, at least."

Theodore looked back at the quill as it glided across the paper, dotting i's and crossing the t's.

"It shouldn't matter too much if you don't have specific answers," Theodore reassured him. "I find that getting as much information as possible typically does speed up the process and reduces the risk of harm, but there are many cases that have been successfully resolved without as much information available."

"Has there been any time in particular that you've noticed an odd change in your sleep patterns or health and well-being?"

"Several," he admitted. Strangely, it was easier admitting such to a professional whom he had hired to help than it was to admit to his own family.

"My sleep patterns were quite erratic from the time I started with the Ministry, though I have always thought it to be a simple consequence of my propensity toward overworking myself, and the added pressures of dealing with various circumstances such as taking on Mr. Crouch's responsibilities, my estrangement with my family, the presence of Death Eaters inside the Ministry for a year, and more recently, my suffering from regular nightmares like so many others of late."

"And how long ago would that be?" Theodore had figured that it'd have to be at least almost ten years ago, seeing that it had been that long since the Triwizard Tournament.

"It is rather common for people to mistakes the symptoms of curses with those of more natural phenomena at first," Theodore had confirmed. He wasn't sure at this point whether it was a curse or not, as he had little to no information to run on. "Especially those from more skilled individuals. This may prove to be something particularly risky to remove. For all involved. Of course I would have to complete a rather thorough assessment of the problem, which in itself carries a degree of risk. I would recommend that you consider weighing the risks and benefits prior to committing either way. But if it is as bad as you say it is, perhaps it is something you want changed before it has the chance to strike once more."

"About 9 years ago, in 1994."

He listened carefully, but there was no doubt in his mind that he would take any risk if it meant protecting those he loved. Especially now with Ginny in his flat, he needed to ensure he would not be a danger to her, however accidental. He refused to lose anyone else.

"I have already considered there being risks involved, Mister Nott. My eldest brother is a cursebreaker, and I am not ignorant of the dangers. No risk is too great if it means ensuring that no others are punished by whatever curse is afflicting me."

He didn't say that if this did not work, his only choice would be self-sacrifice.

"Alright then. People typically do have trouble realizing the actual gravity and potential risks of curse removal. I'm glad to hear that you have a good knowledge of such risks," Theodore said, as he fished through the briefcase and took out a couple of waivers to be signed. Upon finding the proper ones, he quickly skimmed through, and updated it in a couple of areas.

"I can't guarantee that all of your problems will be solved with curse removal; people still die, and we all suffer from maladies. But I do understand that you want to do all that you can for your loved ones."

Percy nodded, taking the papers that were handed to him and reading them over, familiar enough with legalese that he understood them quite well. He then signed where indicated.

"My concern is for more than my loved ones, Mister Nott. I'm Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic. If this curse continues to act as it has, then the Minister himself might be an unwitting victim. Thus far, he is the only one of my bosses that has yet to meet an unpleasant end. You can most certainly understand my concern, and my willingness to do whatever is in my power to protect my family, and the head of the Ministry."

"Understandable, and it is most certainly the most responsible thing to do given your position. I'm glad to hear that there are still some who have the courage to take their careers and relationships seriously," Theodore said, collecting the papers back and scanning where necessary to find the signatures. Upon finding that everything was in order, he did a simple copying spell, handing over one of the copies to his client and the other to his suitcase.

"Now I should have the time to start with the preliminary assessments today, and I'll likely have to return at another time with more specialized equipment and having done a bit of additional research on the curse--or curses that affect you," Theodore explained the standard practice. "I should be able to return in a couple of days to begin the second phase. If I can determine what it is that day and it isn't something terribly complex, I may be able to work on lifting the curse that day or soon afterwards."

Percy accepted his copy of the contact graciously. "Thank you. If you could let me know before we meet next what I owe you for your services, I will be able to pay a visit to Gringotts to acquire the necessary funds."

That said, he felt a calm come over him, as if actual doing something toward solving this dilemma had relieved him of a heavy load. "Is there anything further we need to discuss, Mister Nott, or are you ready to begin?"

"Indeed," Theodore said with a nod. "I do warn you that this can get quite costly. Depending on the type of curse and the risk associated with its removal. After this initial appraisal and research I should be able to offer you a detailed estimate prior to the next appointment."

"If you would acknowledge that much, I should be ready to begin," he said, as he started to pull out a few magical devices.

"I am not without resources," he replied with a nod. "I am aware and acknowledge as such."

He waited patiently as various items were removed from the young man's case, anxious to find out what they were and how they would help.

"Alright then," Theodore said, having found what he was looking for. He took a glance at his Sneakoscope within the suitcase, and noticing no deception had discreetly tucked it back into the corner before turning his attention to other devices.

"If you take this in one hand for a few minutes, this piece of spelled amber should detect any superficial spells, jinxes and curses. Anything that is poorly hidden should be picked up, but if it is as you report, it may be that we'd have to dig a bit deeper. Which is why one wouldn't typically do one test alone." He explained as he handed the stone to Percy and reached for a phial filled with a silvery solution and a smaller silver knife.

"And if you can extend your hand--this will pinch just slightly--but I'll need three drops. It would likely determine if there is a curse that directly affects your kin. But it can occasionally be read to determine whether there are other curses."

Percy appreciated how Nott took the time to explain each of the tests, rather than simply doing them as if Percy weren't really there. He paid them great attention - perhaps he could even speak with Bill about them at some point, at least in a theoretical sense.

He took the stone in his hand, almost expecting to feel some sort of tingling as it did its work, but he felt nothing. His eyes fell on the knife and he flinched. He knew this was necessary, but he didn't have to like it. He, however, extended his free hand to be pricked, treating it as little more than what would occur in the process of a healer's examination.

"I believe a small prick should do - I am unfortunately a profuse bleeder."

"It does sound like a rather distressing curse," he said. "I suppose it is a mild discomfort for greater peace of mind."

Theodore himself wasn't particularly fond of blood, hence the small sample--or the least amount necessary to elicit whatever reaction. He wordlessly performed a cleaning spell on the blade that only manifested itself in a puff of steam before he deftly drew the knife across a finger. The open phial between his other fingers as he counted the drops before closing it, swirling it twice, and putting it back into the suitcase. "It should complete be heated for a short period after sitting for a few hours." He had an idea of the preliminary reading though as it turned a deep blue. There wasn't anything detectable going on. He'd probably have to process it further, but there wasn't likely anything going on. He had considered that before taking out his wand to heal the wound and moving to the next item.

"May I see the stone?" He asked, figuring that it would be about time to see some sort of reaction. "How are you feeling right now?"

Percy winced at the cut but still managed to hold himself still. He nodded, not quite knowing the steps but accepting what was told to him. He opened his hand to reveal the stone.

"I'm feeling the same as I have the last hour," he replied. "Should I be feeling something different?"

Theodore looked back at the Dictaquill, which was still writing down responses. "Amber test neutral," he said to the quill, which wrote it down as he collected it into a silk bag without touching it.

"Nothing is making itself immediately clear, but this should be enough information for me to figure out what--or whether anything should or can be done."

Percy nodded, feeling slightly disappointed that there were no answers yet, but knowing quite well that there were processes that needed to be followed in order to proceed correctly.

"I understand. As someone who deals with Ministry bureaucracy on a regular basis, I am familiar with the need to wait for results. Is there anythig more you require?"

"No, that should suffice for now," Theodore said as he packed the Dictaquill and parchment into the suitcase and closed it with a crisp snap.

"I will get in touch with you once I get enough information to know how to proceed with either more tests or a method of removal. Do you have any further questions, Mr. Weasley?"

"You're welcome," Theodore said, shaking Percy's hand before heading towards the door.

At least this should bring in a tidy sum for the next little while--if there was a curse to be removed. Of course the inital scan didn't seem to reveal anything, but there may be something there. Or it could just be that this man suffered from what was simply just bad luck.
