Who: Percy Weasley and Ernie Macmillan
What: A sudden break in the evening's boredom...
When: Some ungodly hour (probably about 2:00 AM), Wednesday November 12th
Where: Percy's flat, Kinnerton Court
Rating: Worksafe

Ernie sat on alert--or as alert as he could or would manage to be at this point in the evening, having spent his entire day and evening watching over Percy Weasley. Of course there was the visit by Hermione, and too much information about his dynamics with his family, but for the most part, surveillance was boring. It was when he had a chance to sit down and read the Prophet that he suddenly felt that this was worse than he initially fathomed. Muggles are also drawn into this? He sat and considered that for a couple of hours while Percy was going about his home life. Ern's job was just to be there, to check for security at various intervals, and to not interfere.

Eventually he had gotten to one of the more duller aspects of his job, staying alert while everyone else got to sleep. He had managed to do so thus far by having a look at the journals, and doodling--and this was in between his regular, half hour security checks. Nothing seemed particularly remarkable that day, which was probably for the better.

Ern closed his eyes just for a moment, feeling the tiredness catch up to him, but rubbed them firmly before shifting in his seat once more. He had a couple more alerting potions on him, which should tide him over until the morning. He looked at the stillness of the night sky out the nearest window. And waited for it to be over for the day...

It was then he heard sudden yelling, which startled him back into his own body, and into a new sense of awareness. He grabbed the Hit Wizards' communications device from his pocket, and sent an alert in their direction. They will have to follow up if he doesn't call it off within a couple of minutes. Quickly he burst through the door into the darkened bedroom, and had lit up the room with a wave of his wand.

There he was again, approaching the seated, bound body of a woman he loved, a knife in his hand as he cut off her fingers one by one.

No, don't make me do this! he screamed in his mind, but no matter what he did, he couldn't stop himself from the control of the person who had cursed him...

He was screaming aloud as he awoke, his body drenched in sweat as he trembled from the terror of what he had seen. However, it suddenly felt all the worse as reality started coming over him, reminding him that Penny was dead, and that this nightmare in its own way was all he had left of her.

Suddenly, the door burst open and the lights came on, forcing him to shield his eyes from the sudden brightness. Merlin, what was happening? Was it the witch there to kill him? He quickly reached out for his wand where he usually kept it - right underneath his pillow - and pointed it in the direction of the door and whoever had come in.

"Who's there? Identify yourself!"

"Ernest Macmillan, Hit-Wizard on duty. What's happened?" Ern responded to Percy's query as if it were by reflex. His eyes quickly scanned the room and found nothing. Well nothing beyond seeing Percy, in his pyjamas in bed.

But he wouldn't relax just now since it just may be that the threat is hidden. His wand was also raised. The bright light that flooded the room was toned down a bit, but was still bright enough to get around the nooks and crannies that may otherwise be missed in his initial search.

At the identification, Percy heaved a heavy sigh and lay back down on his pillow. For Merlin's sake, couldn't a man suffer a nightmare in peace?!

"I had my nightmare," he replied dully. He lay the hand holding his wand over his stomach, not yet ready to let it go, but no longer on guard. "It was unpleasant."

"Oh," Ernie said, lowering his wand. Well of course. It was due in this upcoming day. He had already owled Michael back about use of the potion, as he knew that they were due in for dreams sometime that day.

"I'm sorry," he added, in reference to both the intrusion as well as the fact that he knew what that suffering was like. "You're alright, though?" He asked, still knowing that one can never really, truly be alright after seeing what was seen in the memories.

Thankfully, he heard no pity in the young man's voice. His hand moved with his body as he breathed in and out, trying to calm himself, yet his hand continued to tremble slightly. It couldn't be helped.

Was he all right? All he could do was remember the dream, but instead of the woman that was always there, he could only see Penny. Penny screaming for her life, begging him to let her go, blaming him for killing her...

"I am physically well." It was the only honest answer he could give.

Ern admittedly felt quite awkward at this point, as he wasn't very familiar with Percy, but at the same time would feel like a terrible person just to leave him as is.

"Well, the nightmares are rather terrible. You're not alone on the matter. Just try not to worry yourself too much over this. It's troublesome, but hopefully this would be resolved soon." He paused for a moment before asking. "Would it help you to speak of it?"

"No!" Percy's reply was quick and automatic. "Thank you for the offer, but I would prefer to consider my experiences in private."

The shaking was mostly subsiding by now, and he moved to tuck his wand under his pillow again.

"If there is nothing else, Mister Macmillan, then I would prefer to attempt sleep again."

"Err--you're welcome," Ern said in response to Percy's very quick response. He moved to cancel the communication to the Ministry, lest a whole team of Hit Wizards show up at Percy's doorstep.

"I'll just have a quick security check once more, and then leave you to your business," he added as he did a brief and quick battery of spells and looked around. He couldn't get out of there fast enough as it was an awkward false alarm. He would--or should put in a note to the Weasleys at some point once he got back from his shift and prior to getting to sleep. "If you need anything Mr. Weasley, I will remain posted outside of your room until the morning."

"Wait!" he called out to get Macmillan's attention.

"I will be rising at 7 for breakfast. At that time, I hope that your shift will be over, and you will get some rest of your own." He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I would very much appreciate it if there would be nobody in my flat to replace you. Am I understood?"

Percy more than anyone knew what it was like to do one's job and be disliked for it, but if he didn't get his flat to himself in short order, he feared he would hex Macmillan or whoever came to replace him.

"Oh?" Ern asked, as he stopped in his tracks at the doorway.

"My shift should be over at that point," Ernie started.

"I will be changing shifts with Addler--are you sure that's what you want though? I know that it is inconvenient to have a Hit-Wizard on you for security but we are beginning to notice a pattern, and your safety is of importance, Mr. Weasley. We can't force you--but it is highly recommended since you are quite important to the Minister himself."

"I do understand that there are concerns, but I am a highly private person and the situation as it is is unacceptable. It is not a comment on your skills, Mister Macmillan, but on my habits."

He sighed. "I intend on calling in sick tomorrow, and thus will not leave my flat all day. If there is an insistence upon watching me, after your shift is over, it can be done from outside my home. Would that be an acceptable compromise?"

He hoped it was, as otherwise he might never catch up on the sleep he had lost in the midst of the nightmare, not with the fear that he would wake up again to be seen in his pyjamas by a strange man pointing a wand.

"Well, I'll bring that to the team and my superior at shift change, but I don't see it being too much of a problem," Ern said with a shrug. The man didn't want real security.

"Do keep in mind that it is more safe though to have someone within earshot and/or line-of-sight. Any further and it gets proportionally risky. I see no problem in stationing Addler outside, and you can let him know of any changing security demands."

He heaved a sigh of relief that the man wasn't arguing overly much.

"Thank you," he said genuinely. "You may return to your post, but be warned, I may have another nightmare. If that is the case, please be more... discrete."

"Of course," Ern said, as he walked out the door. He felt no less than a bit puzzled still, but will clear the reduction in security it with his supervisor.

"Good night, Mr. Weasley," he added, almost as an afterthought as he closed the door after him.
