Who: Percy Weasley & OPEN TO ALL WEASLEYS (Biological and honourary)
What: Sunday Brunch at the Burrow
Where: The Burrow
When: November 9, 11 AM
Rating: PGish

In five years, Percy had yet to miss Sunday Brunch with his family. After the regretful events of the past, and the loss of Fred, he had promised to himself and his mother that he would come, and he always did, even when he was sick or tired due to a late night doing paperwork. Even when he felt at his worst and didn't want his family to see him that way, he came. Perhaps it was a sort of penance, or simply a man doing his duty - or perhaps it was nothing more than a boy's need to be with his Mum.

Whichever it was, there he was, as usual, trying to get his mother to allow him to help her in the kitchen while she proceeded to force him to sit at the table, declaring he was (again) far too thin and needed some good food in him. As he sat down, he was met by a knowing look from his father, as if to say You know better than to argue with her, why else do you think I spend so much time with my plugs?

As a heaping plate of food was placed before him, he sighed, but was thankful for small favours, for in the melee, at least neither of them had mentioned hearing about his little faux pas the morning before. The last thing he needed was a lecture from his Mum.

George also made a point of always making it home on Sundays, though he hadn't started doing it until about two years ago when he'd finally moved back to his flat full time after recovering. But since then he'd been the dutiful son and shown up to sound the morning, someimtes the day, with his parents and siblings. So when he got up that morning, he dressed in one of his less dramatic suits, much more laid back, but still keeping to his usual style. When he aparated into the yard, he strolled to the kitchen door and let himself in, saying hello to the three people in the kitchen already. He gave his mum a hug and shook his dad's hand before walking around behind Percy and giving him a hard clap on the shoulder. "Alright there, Percy?" he asked as he sat down opposite him at the table as a plate was placed in front of him. Unlike his parents, he was well aware of what Percy had done the other morning, and he gave his older brother a knowing look, but didn't say anything about it.

Ron was not particularly looking forward to this, but he had already missed it last week and he was certain that his mother was already fretting over him enough as it was. It also didn't help that he had missed the funeral too and that he hadn't been back home since Harry had died or seen his mother at all. Truthfully he didn't even want to come at all, but since the DA meeting he felt obliged to do what was right rather than what was easy because he'd already done enough of what was wrong to last him a lifetime. So it was about time to start mending the bridges he'd been burning down.

He arrived with a pop! on the lawn outside and it didn't surprise him too much that his mother looked outside to see who it was. He was already a bit late, so the fact that she came running out to him instead of letting him actually get into the door was not really very surprising but still a bit annoying. "Mum!" Ron muttered, as she encircled him with her arms. "Can't I at least come inside first?"

He should have expected what came next, the berating about not coming round or letting her take care of him or going to Harry's funeral or eating enough or being nice to Ginny (What?) or showing up to brunch or...well, it went on for a while and Ron sort of tuned it out once the food was placed in front of him because he was rather hungry. He found himself thinking about whether Hermione was going to show up or not instead of listening to her. "Hey," he said to his brothers and father through a mouthful of food.

Hermione was planning on showing up to the Burrow early, but things had distracted her. She'd stopped by the Ministry to get the paperwork for the transfer and had started filling it out in her office while she waited for the appropriate time to show up at the Burrow. But of course, she'd gotten into the paperwork and forgotten to check the time, so when she finally looked up from her work, she cursed under her breath for losing track of time. Now she was late. Wonderful. She put her paperwork in her desk before grabbing her things and hurrying to the exit. Once clear of others, she aparated to the Burrow and hurried to the door, finding Percy, George and Ron already there, and was quickly hugged by Mrs. Weasley when she came into view.

"I'm so sorry I'm late, I lost track of time," she said a bit breathlessly as she placed her things by the door. She walked around the table and sat down next to Ron, saying hi to everyone before giving Ron a quick kiss on the cheek and accepting her own plate of food. It had been a long night, and she'd had trouble sleeping after the meeting, but she felt better being with the Weasleys. They were as much family as her own were.

Percy had bristled at the knowing look from George, but had maintained his concentration on his food. He knew that if he didn't make a sufficient dent in it, his mother would fret terribly. She didn't know about the nightmares - neither the recent ones of dismemberment, nor the longer-lasting ones of Fred's death - and he planned on keeping it that way.

He nodded to Ron and Hermione as they each entered and were given plates from Molly, who shortly thereafter left to answer an owl. Seeing her gone, his Dad politely excused himself for a couple of minutes so that he could 'attend to something' in the shed.

Percy assumed he'd gotten some sort of new Muggle item that he simply couldn't wait to disassemble.

"So Hermione," he began, addressing the one member of his 'extended' family he had the easiest time conversing with, "have there been any new developments in your department?"

Only after he asked the question did he wince and glance at Ron, remembering what his brother had written the day before.

Hermione looked up at Percy's voice as she worked on the very full plate of food. She realized then that Percy wasn't part of the DA, might not even know what it was, so even though the others had been there for the discussion last night, Percy hadn't heard about her possible transfer of departments, and she had no idea what he might think, or if he'd approve of what they as a group were doing. "Nothing terribly interesting has been going on in my department," she started, unaware of what Ron had said to him the previous day. "I think a lot of my coworkers have been suffering from the nightmares. No one says anything, but they're all zombies practically. I was actually thinking of making a transfer to the Department of Mysteries, so I could help in the investigations going on. I feel a bit useless in my current job. How are things going for you?"

She leaned into Ron a little, taking comfort in his presence and hoping his bad mood wouldn't lash out at his older brother.

Percy looked back down at his plate at the mention of the dreams, and unconsciously moved to rub his neck where the spot had shown up. He quickly caught himself at it and moved his hand back to his lap.

"Well, there is no excuse for zombiism at work," he insisted with his usual pomposity to cover up his true feelings on the matter. Also, he himself had not allowed it to overly affect his work. Just his non-working time.

"I'm certain you will be able to help, as the department can always use intelligent employees such as yourself. If you need any assistance in your transfer, then you have but to ask."

He quickly averted the subject from his own welfar, not fully in the proper mindset where he'd be able to obfuscate properly. "I do believe Mum has truly outdone herself with these potatoes."

George noticed Percy touching his neck, and remembered the spot he said he'd found there, and of course blamed on George. While he'd taken responsibility for it originally, now that he knew it was something more serious, he made a mental not to pull Percy aside later and talk to him about it. He was worried about his brother, but knew Percy wouldn't appreciate it being brought up in front of others. "Come on, everyone deserves a break with what's been going on," he said in response to Percy's first comment. "I've had to send a few of my employees home over the last few days because they've been jumping at shadows due to their dreams. Real pain, but I don't want them to run themselves into the ground either." He took a few large bites as the others continued talking.

Ron looked over at Percy when he mentioned Hermione's work at the Ministry. He saw Percy look at him and for a moment wondered if it had something to do with his comment in George's margins. He'd almost forgotten about it with all the other things that had happened at the meeting. This past week Ron would have said something to Percy, but after last night, this Ron was supposed to be trying harder at not being such an arse, so he kept his mouth shut, even with Percy made mention of it not being okay for employees to be so off at work, despite having the nightmares. It wasn't fair for him to say that, but it wasn't Ron's place to say anything either.

"Actually, if Percy could help speed up your transfer any, 'Mione, that would be brill. I think you could use the assistance, yeah? If he's willing to help, that is." Ron gave Percy a bit of a look.

When George mentioned the shop, Ron looked over at him. "How is the shop, mate?"

Percy looked up in shock as Ron suggested he, of all people, could help speed up Hermione's transfer. It was true, of course, but normally he would get some sort of accusation that he was trying to use his position to look better than the rest, or some other such thing. He had long lost track of such comments, and they tended to blend together in his mind.

"Of course I am," he replied, then cleared his throat. "Hermione would be an asset."

Percy turned to George as Ron asked him about the shop. He himself had been to the shop more in the last week than in the last several months altogether, asking about this bloody spot. After Friday, however, he wondered if George was indeed just making him think he had done something, as Lavender had said all of those with the nightmares had the spots.

"If you should require a hand with the accounts again, let me know," he offered his brother, as that had been the one thing he'd managed to do to help keep the business afloat while George had been 'away'.

George watched the proceedings as Hermione nodded her agreement at Percy's offer of help. She seemed a bit relieved to him, and quite happy to accept his help. That was good, George was quite sure they could figure out a great many things if Hermione was in the Department of Mysteries, not necesarily just about this particular wierdness either. She and Percy were the smartest people George knew, he was lucky to have them around, because he was frequently in need of a brain that worked at full capacity, and his rarely did.

Once the conversation turned back to him, George sat up a little straighter. "Shop's good," he said through a mouthful. He swallowed before continuing. "Actually, business is booming right now, so yea if you had time to help me out with the books Perce, that'd be ace. I bloody well hate doing that money shite. Takes all the fun out of business, having to figure out the numbers. And you two really should come around more often," he added, turning to Hermione and Ron. "Use to see you a lot more, kinda miss having familiar faces around, y'know?"

"Thanks Perce," Ron said to his older brother, trying his best to be on his best behaviour. He hadn't missed Percy's surprised look at his suggestion. Well maybe that meant he was turning things around at least.

"Do you need some help since some of your shop workers are out?" Ron asked, taking a large bite of his food. It's not like he didn't exactly have the time. Though many of the other Aurors were busy, they hadn't given Ron any of the cases and now that they were all one case, Ron couldn't consult on it because Harry's case was still included and they didn't want him involved. Not that he didn't plan on getting involved somehow. He might have all the general information that they told everyone in the DMLE but he was going to find out what they knew about Harry specifically somehow.

George thought for a moment, but he wasn't usually one to turn down some help at the shop. It wasn't exactly easy to keep things running smoothly, and he was greatful to everyone in his family who helped him out over the years, it was always helpful. "Yea, that'd be great Ron, if you've got the time. I can always use more help around the shop, especially when I have to send people home. Just let me know when you'll be round. You should have the register down by now, right? My normal register girl seems to be losing her mind a bit since all this started. I feel bad for her, wish there was something I could do to help her. But a few extra days off might help."

"Unfortunately, there's nothing that can be done to help," Percy interjected, staring down at his plate. "Neither sleeping draughts nor alcohol have any effect, and all that can be done is to brace one's self for the next night."

He shook his head as if suddenly remembering where he was, and with whom. "Or so I've been told."

He stood up to bring his partially empty plate to the counter. The collar of his robes were crumpled, a testament to his state of mind of late, and did nothing to hide the mark on his neck.

"But there are many who have more than simple nightmares to worry about. So many dead..." He lifted his head, looking out the window, and thought of Penny's grief. "And not just wizards, either."

Hermione realized as he walked away, Percy was having the nightmares. The way he spoke about it, the sound of his voice, there was no denying it, and then she saw the spot on his neck, and she put a hand to her mouth and grabbed Ron's hand before she spoke, gathering her thoughts and proceeding cautiously.

"Percy," she said quietly. "On your neck, you... You have a black spot on you're neck. You're having the nightmares," she said rather than asked. After their discussion at the DA meeting last night, the spot was a connection to the nightmares. "Percy, part of the reason I'm going to the DoM is to figure out what the spots mean, why they're connected to the dreams. I'll keep you in the know about what I find out, we'll figure this out, one way or another."

Ron looked over at Percy when Hermione said he had a spot and sure enough, he could see it there on the back of his neck. Why had he not said anything to any of them? This was rather bloody important for him to not mention and if he was having nightmares that meant -

"Percy, why the hell didn't you say anything about this to us? That you were having the nightmares? What if you had been-" Not only could he not think it, he couldn't say it either. He'd just lost Harry, he'd already lost Fred, now he was supposed to lose Percy too? This was absolute bullshite. Ron was getting really fucking tired of everyone dying around him. He slammed his free hand on the table, though his face wasn't contorted in anger, but sadness.

"No, 'Mione's right. We're going to figure this out so you haven't got anything to worry about, yeah?"

Percy stiffened as they spoke their conclusions. Suddenly self-conscious about the spot, he reached up to straighten out his collar in an effort to hide it from view.

"At no time did I state I was having nightmares of any kind," he argued, his face stiff, but still facing away from his family. "And even if I were, it would be nobody's business but my own."

He turned a knob on the sink to start filling it with water, intending to wash the dishes to give him something else to focus on. "If you want to help, bring me your dishes so Mum doesn't have to do the cleaning."

"Even if you were?" Ron repeated, disbelieving. Was he really trying to lie to them just now? Ron stood up at the table, relinquishing Hermione's hold on his hand. "Do you think we're stupid, Perce? We know what the spot is! Why are you trying to lie to us? What the hell is wrong with you? Not our business? Like bloody hell it isn't!

"We just lost Harry, we've already lost Fred, now you're having the nightmares and you want to say it's none of our sodding business?! This is your family, something you said was important to you - y'know, after you ditched us for the Ministry all those years ago and then came back saying you were being an idiot - was it true or not? Did you mean it or not? Because if you're going to be in this bloody family then you're going to tell us when something is wrong so we can help you with it! That's just how it works, alright!"

Ron hit the table again with his hand, knocking over his glass of orange juice. He wasn't really sure where any of that had come from, but he was really tired of everyone around him dying and he was also pretty tired of Percy being a git.

George glanced nervously towards the other room, fairly certain their mother had wandered out of ear shot, but he knew if she over heard any of this, it would bring her storming back in. But maybe that was the note they needed to hit to get Percy to realize how serious this is.

"Percy," George said, keeping his voice more even and lower than Ron's. Although the mention of Fred always put him in a foul mood, and now he was feeling the effects of it. "Ron's right, the last thing we need is to lose anyone else. What would mum do? She already lost you once and nearly threw herself off the Burrow when it happened, and I'm not lying, so don't try and say that's an exageration. We're family, our job is to stick together and help each other, so you're going to be stuck with us whether you like it or not, because we're not going to let you go without a fight."

Percy had been picking up dishes to put into the soapy water, trying to drown out his brothers, but to no avail. Finally, he simply couldn't take any more of them speaking to him as if he were some child, and not their older brother, and with a splash, the plate he held dropped from his hands as he balled them up and turned to face his family.

"Of course it's all about me being an idiot, or a prat, or what not, right?! It couldn't possibly be because I didn't even know there was anything wrong until bloody Friday! That I've gotten so bloody used to waking up to visions of my brother's death almost every night for five years that another nightmare was almost a relief!"

By now he was trembling, and as the reality of what he'd just admitted hit him, he felt a great wave of shame. Yet now that the words had begun, it was impossible to stop them, so he just closed his eyes so he wouldn't have to see their faces.

"And I thought the spot was George's doing, and then I find out Penny's sharing my dream, and now her brother's dead and she thinks it's a witch that did it, and then Fred again, and I couldn't even drink it away, and I just don't know what's happening anymore..."

With every word, he leaned back harder against the counter until it was the only thing keeping him from collapsing to the ground. The one thing he had thankfully not blubbered out was that for at least one moment, he had wondered if it would be better to be dead.

Hermione was the first to respond in the shocked silence that followed. She stood up and walked away from Ron, putting a soft hand on Percy's arm and looking at him with sad, understanding eyes. "Percy, you're in danger, we want to help you. The people with these spots seem to be the ones suffering from the nightmares, there could be connections, clues, what you've seen could help us save yours and other people's lives. This has nothing to do with the past, it's just the present we need to worry about now." She turned to aim that last comment at the other two at the table.

George sat silently after Percy's rant. Of course he'd dreamed of Fred almost every night since his death, though it was never the same dream, and though he did relive the moment he felt Fred die frequently, every so often the dreams weren't bad. Percy might have seen him die, and dreamed of it endlessly, but Fred had felt him cut out, and still felt it every day. He hated having this conversation, and couldn't bring himself to look at the others. He wished so frequently that it had been him in Fred's place. He didn't completely hear what Hermione had said, focusing on keeping his emotions in check as much as possible and staring at his half eaten food.

It wasn't like he had been trying to make Percy feel bad. Nor had he been trying to call him an idiot either. And maybe he had lost his temper, but he was Ron and well, that's what Ron usually did even long before this past week ever happened, so it wasn't like they could fault him for jumping to conclusions. He was always known for doing that. Of course now he had something else to apologise for. It seemed like he would be apologising for shite for the rest of his sodding life.

Ron was fairly certain he'd never really done this before, or at least if he had, he couldn't really recall it, but he knew that he needed to do it now because if he was going to spout a bunch of shite at Percy about family then he needed to be there for his brother no matter how uncomfortable this was going to be. Not to mention Hermione was giving him a look and George was stunned out of commission so it was apparently up to him now. He walked over to Percy and pulled him into a hug, disregarding whether or not he wanted it or not.

"I'm sorry, Perce," he said behind his head. "I'm the git and I'm sorry."

Percy felt the hand on his arm and thanked Merlin his eyes were closed. He'd said more than he'd ever though he would, more than he should have, and he didn't want to see the pity in her eyes, for it would no doubt be there. As he'd said to Finnegan only dayse before, he didn't want anybody's pity.

And the next thing he knew there were arms, and Ron's voice, and he had no idea what to do. He stiffened up instinctively, and he almost wanted to push him away and run out the door. However, in the end, it was a stray thought that decided for him, a thought that wondered if Penny'd had the chance to say goodbye to Lloyd, and what if something happened to any of them...

He didn't open his eyes, instead awkwardly returning the hug with a stiff pat to Ron's shoulder.

"Well," he managed to say, his voice raw with emotion. "I suppose we're both gits, then."

Yes, it was definitely the most awkward hug he'd ever experienced. Definitely not like anything he had with Hermione, Harry or hell, even George. But it didn't matter because he needed to do this for Percy, needed to show him that he had been an idiot for flying off the handle, but also show him that this was still about family for them. They needed to stick together.

He pulled back after Percy spoke and said, "Percy, we're going to figure this out alright? Just...if something is going on you need to talk to us, yeah? We want to help you, it doesn't matter what it is. George even promises not to take the piss, right George?" Ron looked over at his other brother, not sure if he had even come to yet from whatever daze he had been stuck in.

George was still a million miles away, staring at his plate, and really didn't know what was going on until he heard his name. "What?" he said, looking up suddenly, having missed the hug and everything. "Yea, sure," he said, not actually sure what he'd just agreed to. Everything seemed more recent and raw than it had when he'd woken up that morning, he kind of wanted to get out of there, but knew that after saying all that stuff about family, that wasn't the best move to make.

"Sorry, I guess I... got lost there for a bit, yea we'll figure this out, one way or another."

Percy heaved a sigh of relief when Ron finally let him go, and took a few moments to get himself together. Finally, he was able to open his eyes and face them - though he was still wary about what he would see.

"Ron," he said after clearing his throat. "I promised Penelope I would have an Auror contact her. If she's right, in that her Muggle brother was killed by a witch... perhaps it is related to the others. If one goes by the dates of death, there has been one every two days, but none on Thursday that we know of. That was the night Lloyd died."

Ron was surprised that Percy was coming to him with this. He certainly wasn't one of the most senior Aurors and since Harry's death he had not been assigned to any of the murder cases which was apparently a good thing since they had now combined all the investigations because of their similarities.

Of course he was also surprised because he didn't know that Percy still talked to his ex-girlfriend or that Penelope's brother had died. "I-I didn't know that her brother had died, mate, I'm sorry. I mean, I haven't been assigned to any of the other cases but I'll certainly contact her if you'd like me to." He really felt a bit off balance by this request, mostly because he just never expected Percy to come to him instead of a senior Auror first, seeing how high up in the Ministry Percy was now.
