Who: Percy Weasley & OPEN
What: Getting very, very drunk, because it's so much better than sleeping
Where: The Hog's Head, Hogsmeade
When: November 8, 8:30 AM
Rating: possibly NSFW for drunk talk and cursing

Last night had been the worst night yet.

He'd been awoken by that dream again, cutting off fingers, hearing pleas... and when he woke up, all he could hear was Penelope's voice in his head, crying instead of the woman in his dream. If he dreamt it, she must have dreamt it too - at least by Lavender's logic, which Percy could not yet counter. He felt guilty, as if his having the dream is what caused Penny to have it, and thus to cause her pain yet again.

He'd then dragged himself to his kitchen and taken out his bottle of firewhiskey, which unfortunately only had one glass worth in it. He'd drunken what was there then gone in search for more, but his cupboards were bare of alcohol. He hadn't had much to drink in a couple of years, just the occasional glass, so it hadn't been an urgent matter to replace his supply when it had gotten low. He regretted that immediately.

He tried to go back to bed, and had finally succeeded in sleeping. Unfortunately, this second bout of slumber had been interrupted just like the first. This time, however, it was by a different dream, but one that was much more familiar. This time, it was Fred.

By this point, the sun had risen, and Percy was desperate for anything to take his mind away from the dreams. He'd pulled on a set of robes over his pyjamas, a fedora to cover up his bed-head, and Apparated away to Hogsmeade to the one place he knew he could find solace in the form of alcohol at this time of the morning.

The Hog's Head.

There were a couple of regulars in the inn, who had likely been there all night, and Aberforth was behind the bar. Percy made a beeline for his friend, who took one look at him and shook his head.

"Isn't it too early for you to be here?"

"I need a drink," he said plainly, pulling out his coin purse and opening it.

"No," Aberforth refused, slamming a hand down on the counter.

"Yes," Percy insisted, dropping a number of coins down that even Aberforth could not refuse. The man sighed and looked as if he were waging an inner war, but in the end, it was one Percy would win. A glass was pulled up and slammed onto the counter, quickly followed by a bottle of firewhiskey. Aberforth lifted the bottle to start pouring, but Percy placed his hand over his friend's. "The whole bottle."

Aberforth grumbled and put down the bottle. Percy picked it up, along with the glass, and retreated to a corner of the inn where he could drink in peace. Within half an hour, 3/4 of the bottle was finished, and he was well on his way to not even remembering his last name, let alone what he'd dreamt the night before.

Adrian sometimes stopped in at the Hog's Head for various meals, and by this time, he was rather well acquainted with Aberforth Dumbledore. This morning in particular, he was going into the ministry by late morning, so he decided he had the time to have a proper breakfast. He'd missed dinner the night before and so ordered a full Scottish breakfast.

As he waited he noticed a shock of red hair hiding not at all well in the corner. It took only a moment to realise which Weasley it was. One eyebrow raised,Adrian approached, surprised to see Percy there at that hour. As he got closer, he became even more surprised to see the state he was in. With bluntness more characteristic of Cade, Adrian stood right next to the table and asked, "Merlin, Weasley are you drunk?"

All of Percy's concentration had been on the bottle of firewhiskey, and so he jumped at the sound of a voice right next to his table. He looked around quickly with glazed eyes, then immediately stopped as a wave of vertigo overtook him. He put his head in his hand, hoping for the world to stop spinning.

"Someone got a weasel drunk?" he asked in confusion, not having fully registered that Weasley was a surname, let alone his.

Adrian's expression went from surprised to completely incredulous and he sat down across from Percy. "Weasley, you're pure bawsed, you are. At eight-bloody-thirty in the morning." This was so unbelievably out of what Adrian thought was Percy's character that he was speechless for a moment before asking, "You all right?"

The moving thing that had been talking to him was now lowering itself across from him. Oh, a chair! That must be it, it was a person, sitting in a chair! The idea was suddenly so ludicrous that he couldn't help but let out a giggle.

"I'm bossed?" he asked, again confused, and laughed some more. "Not so much anymore. My boss is a nice boss. He doesn't boss me like my other bosses used to boss."

It made complete sense, to Percy at least.

"I'm fine, swell," he replied, laying his head down on an arm folded upon the tabletop. "Just... don't tell my boss!" This set off another set of giggles that had him shaking from head to toe.

Adrian realised that Percy had absolutely no idea what he'd said so he clarified. "I mean that you've had too much alcohol to drink, Percy," he said in a gentler tone, "and it isn't even nine in the morning yet." He wondered if something had happened to set Percy off; he had to have some reason to be so drunk so early.

"I've no intention of telling Shacklebolt," Adrian replied, watching Percy dissolve into giggles. "But only if you give over that bottle and stop drinking."

The moving person's last words finally registered with Percy, causing his giggling to stop and his head to lift with a look of almost sobriety and shock.

"No!" he protested, reaching out for the bottle. "I need this. If I stop, I might sleep, and I can't go back to sleep."

He cradled the bottle against his chest as if it were a newborn, and his life depended upon keeping it safe.

Ah. "Having nightmares? You might try a dreamless sleep potion rather that an entire bottle of...whatever it is you're having." Adrian's meal suddenly appeared in front of him, but he didn't go for it just yet.

"Look I'm not about to simply sit here and watch you drink yourself into oblivion. So set down the bottle and let's have a chat, yeah?" He very calmly picked up his knife and fork and spread the potato scone on his plate. "have you had breakfast?"

Reality had managed to break through Percy's drunken stupor that he was able to remember his name and several basic facts about his life, though he was nowhere near being something approaching sober.

"I've tried," he admitted, loosening his grip on the bottle. "It doesn't work. But I'm supposed to be used to them by now."

He looked at the man's plate - he still wasn't quite able to recognize him, but he could at least feel a familiarity - and felt a strange mix of hunger and nausea. "No. I don't think I've eaten since..." he did a mental calculation, "lunch, yesterday."

"Right, how about we get some proper food in you first then?" Adrian ordered for him, not about to listen to any possible protests. He ordered starchy foods, all the better to soak up the alcohol, and shied away from anything greasy. Toast, potato scones, things of that nature.

"Supposed to be used to what exactly?" Adrian queried, as he had a bit of tomato.

Percy ignored the ordering of food and simply lifted his elbows onto the table - a rude gesture he would usually never make - and lay his chin in his hands. His fingers scratched at his eyelids a moment as he yawned. He quickly shook his head, not wanting to let sleepiness take over again.

He had to stay awake.

"Nightmares," he replied, too drunk to think of a way not to answer a question addressed to him. Alcohol: veritaserum light. "First the dissection. Been having that one for a week now. Then Fred. Been having that one for five years."

He reached out for his glass of firewhiskey, needing to drown out the dreams yet again.

Adrian had a bit of sausage as he watched Percy be so thoroughly un-Percy. "Ah. I'm very sorry to hear that, Percy. You said you've tried dreamless sleep potions and it hasn't worked?"

He watched him go for the whiskey again and thought maybe Percy needed to get this drunk, of only once, to get it out of his system. if anything, Adrian could just make certain he was all right before going into the office.

"Nearly overdosed on the stuff one night," he admitted, finally getting his fingers around the glass in a solid enough grip that he could bring it to his lips for a drink. Up, and down, and the glass was empty. He immediately moved to refill it.

"I thought I was just going crazy, but now... it's Penny too. I must have done it to her somehow. I've hurt her too much, I can't keep doing it."

Adrian zeroed in on what Percy said last. "What do you mean you must've done it to her? She's been having nightmares too, but it isn't your doing. There are plenty of people having these recurring nightmares, haven't you heard?" Adrian had a bit of egg and then asked pointedly, "You've got a spot, haven't you? Black spot on you somewhere?"

"I've heard of nightmares, but not shared ones," he replied with a shake of his head. "We have the same one, except... we're different people in it. I just don't know what's going on, and when I hurt her in the dream, I know she's feeling it, and I hate myself for it."

The food that had been ordered for him arrived and he simply stared at it as if it were about to sprout legs. At the question, he simply pulled at the neck of his robes to reveal the mark that had not been well hidden. "Until yesterday, I thought George had done it."

Adrian actually paused then, contemplating that. he hadn't heard of that before either. "All right, I'll give you that. I hadn't heard anyone's nightmares being connected that way before. There's got to be some reason for that."

Adrian nodded towards the plate. "Have a bite, it won't kill you. But no, your brother is not likely to have caused that. Everyone suffering those nightmares seems to have one. My mother does."

Percy did as he was told, picking up a fork to poke at a piece of potato. His family would be amazed at how malleable he was when pissed out of his mind. He brought the potato up to his mouth and bit down, chewed, and swallowed. His stomach didn't rebel, in fact seemed to welcome the food, so he speared another piece to be eaten.

"I'm sorry," he said, genuinely sorry that the man's mother was suffering as well. He still didn't recognize him, but the world wasn't quite as fuzzy as it had been five minutes ago, so perhaps recognition would come soon. "I'd hate if my Mum were going through this too."

Adrian shrugged a shoulder. "Your mum's a much more decent person than my own. I'd be more distressed about Mrs. Weasley suffering these nightmares than my own mother." It was probably harsh but also quite true. Adrian's detachment to his mother was only growing.

He watched as Percy ate, satisfied that the other wizard might not be terribly sick all over the place if he could keep the food down. "So have you been drinking since last night or did you decided to start this morning?"

Percy nodded sagely. "Mum is a saint," he agreed, not thinking much of the denouncement of the bloke's own mother. He more than anyone knew how complicated familial feelings could get.

He looked at the bottle and squinted. "Well, I got here around 8. Don't know what time it is now." He poured the bottle and watched as the last of the firewhiskey filled his glass. He grinned. "And that's official one full bottle. I bet Fred would be proud."

Adrian moved the empty bottle aside so its sudden lightness wouldn't cause Percy to accidentally knock it to the floor. "Very impressive, Weasley, especially so early in the day." Adrian was starting to understand - this obviously wasn't a habit of Percy's and perhaps he just needed to get this out. Merlin knew most of the department thought he needed to get out a bit more and have some fun.

"It's only about half-past eight now, maybe a quarter to nine," Adrian replied going back to his food. "I do hope you haven't any plans for the day?"

Percy forked up more food, suddenly feeling rather hungry. As his right hand moved the fork, his left hand supported his head so it wouldn't fall over.

"Nope, no plansy. Other than staying awake. Gotta stay awake." He looked at the bloke questioningly. "Why do you ask? There's not an emergency at work, is there?" His face fell hard. "Merlin, why do I have to solve everything?" He paused, then nodded to himself. "Ah, that's why."

He then continued to eat as if the conversation in his head had been spoken aloud.

Adrian just watched Percy for a moment and then shook his head. "No, nothing at work. I simply wanted to be sure you haven't got somewhere to be after this that you shouldn't be showing up for in this condition."

He finished his tomato and then the potato scone. His breakfast was nearly half done at this point, but he noticed that Percy was eating in earnest now. Good.
