Characters: Marietta Edgecombe & Zacharias Smith
Setting: Diagon Alley Cafe, 5 November 2003, 11:45am
Rating: PG for language
Summary: Two friends catching up turns into a challenge of twisted proportions.

Marietta could not say that she was not relieved that she had woken this morning without having the reoccurring nightmare she had experienced the previous few days. Normally she would wake in a cold sweat, screaming and crying aloud and then proceed to vomit into her toilet anything she may have had left in her stomach from the night before. There had been no relief from the redheaded woman and in some ways she wondered if this woman was supposed to be her or someone she was related to because she was so beautiful and powerful yet undeniably cruel. Yet she felt a slight bit of longing for this woman, now that she was not present in her dreams of the previous night.

Pushing the dreams from her mind, Marietta raised her head high and apparated from the Ministry to Diagon Alley to meet Zacharias. She had not yet spoken with him since all of the business with Harry Potter and his arrest had happened and she had been meaning to do so. Truly she should have done so sooner, but she'd been slightly preoccupied with the nightmares and worried about the spot that had appeared on her thigh, which the healers had said was nothing to worry about yet since it was not giving her any trouble. Marietta was not one to take any sort of blemish lightly after her experience in sixth year, but she couldn't exactly make them come up with anything useful and she certainly wasn't a healer.

So for now she would just have to preoccupy herself with seeing just how much more stupid Zacharias Smith could get. She had thought at this point in life that he could no longer surprise her, but being caught with Harry Potter's dead body had really raised the bar for him. He truly was becoming a Smith man through and through. For as much time as he spent with his sister, it was a wonder how the girl did not rub any sort of decorum off on the man. Marietta sat down at the cafe table and crossed her ankles properly, gazing at the menu as she waited for her lunch partner to show up.

She smiled at him, as though she were appeasing a small child. "Right, that would be assuming you actually had a hand to play, love."

When he mentioned eating it was as if the server finally decided that they should get their meals because he showed up with them. She gave him a sarcastic smile, gesturing at the plates. "Happy now?

After taking a bite of her own food she continued as if there had been no interruption. "But alright, don't say anything. I wasn't looking at your cards, I was only asking what you were expecting your prize to be. I mean, you don't honestly think I'd employ your services of murder, do you? If you cocked that up as badly as you did Potter's death I'd be better off hiring a troll. Maybe he'd have the sense not to get caught with the blood on his hands. Really, Zacharias, what were you thinking? Why were you even there?"

Amusing as it could be in small doses, he was really getting annoyed at how much people underestimated him. From whether or not he could kill someone, and now to be able to have hidden motives. Maybe he was just that good that people didn't realize he had depth.

Zacharias just smiled like he had a secret and picked up his utensils to start in on his food. That was the question wasn't it - why was he there? what was he thinking? The truth was the whole think that accidental and a little bit traumatizing to be covered in someone else's blood (and without the satisfaction of a job well done).

"I don't think I'm allowed to comment on an ongoing investigation," he said with an air of teasing to his voice sure that was not the answer she wanted. Still, it was the only one she was going to get after her little comment. "Although things are never as they seem. You should know that."

Alright so there were times in which Zacharias' attitude frustrated her. It was not very often, but it happened. For the most part, she could take most of his nonsense in stride and usually she did not comment on the things he did to ruin his life (though she had to admit she had been a bit tetchy with him when he'd gone and let himself lose all his inheritance all because he was unwilling to find a bloody girlfriend). They would dance circles around one another before admitting much of anything, like that maybe she actually cared about his well-being and she thought he was being entirely idiotic to not let anyone else know what exactly he'd been up to that night and get some sodding help in getting the Aurors off his back. They were watching him so closely they probably knew every moment he wanked and he was just eating it up so far.

"No, they really aren't. Like the fact that you can't walk five bloody meters without someone watching your every step, hoping you slip up and finally and reveal just exactly what did happen." She sighed. "I honestly hope you've got the right idea here, Zacharias, I really do," Marietta said quite seriously, letting slip a bit of her own exhaustion from the past few days. It was a rare moment for her indeed, but there were times like these between them every now and then in the past that they chose to ignore for the most part.

Did he have the right idea? He wasn't sure. She wasn't wrong, a number of people were waiting for him to slip up. More importantly many of them wanted the story - wanted to know what it was like to kill Potter and if not that then what it was like to find him. He he sure as well wasn't going to give them of that.

"I guess that we'll just have to see then." He gave her another cheeky smile before tucking into his meal. Zacharias hadn't realized how hungry he was until he actually started to eat. For now his family could wait, Adelle wouldn't be happy with him, but he needed the time away to maintain his sanity. Although even that was an arguable point.
