Who: Theodore Nott and Melinda Bobbin
What: A drink after work.
When: Sunday, November 2, 2003 at about 20:00.
Where: Three Broomsticks Inn, Hogsmeade.
Rating: Worksafe.

Last night was rough, but Theodore was lucky that he had a relatively easy job that day and that he slept relatively well the night before. He wasn't as affected by Potter's death as many others seemed. He didn't necessarily hate the man, since he did bring about peace, but he wasn't particularly fond of the war that broke out because of the two factions in the wizarding world. Potter represented one of the "Causes", after all. And his father had fought for the other, the losing "Cause". Theodore avoided the activities around Potter's death the previous evening, but still heard the murmurings about the same that day.

Shortly after work he was seated at a table with his back to the wall (sometimes these sorts of things happen unintentionally), he had heard even more murmurings about one Isaiah Smith being found murdered and his son having something to do with it. He knew the Smiths from awhile back, from his parents' social circle. And of course Smith was at that gala. He didn't think that Smith would have it in him, in some ways. Or was that himself that wouldn't have it in him? He had often asked himself that and had come up with an answer related to necessity and whatever it was had to be bloodless, painless. He had trouble with suffering and blood, even in others.

Instead of engaging those who were busy spreading rumours, Theodore had taken out a smaller handbook on types of visions as experienced by those who practiced magic. He just was interested in being surrounded by others, not necessarily getting drawn into anything in particular. He took a sip of his firewhiskey, the burning sensation warming up his insides. He had one earlier that day prior to work and this was only to even things out, after all.

After the last customer had left the shop, Melinda spent the next hour or so finishing up her work before closing the store for the night. She was tired mentally, but still wide awake. She would have simply gone home, but instead, she cast a heavy warming charm on herself and walked the High Street to the Three Broomsticks. Maybe dinner and a drink would help her relax enough to get decent sleep tonight.

Even with the warming charm, Melinda's dress hadn't provided much protection against the cold, so she was shaking off the chill by the time she stepped inside the inn and looked about for a table.

The clear advantage of sitting with one's back to the wall was that one was able to see all action within and coming into the pub, as well as to decrease the ever-present paranoia that seemed to have seeped back into Theodore's life since the nightmares. His eyes lingered to the door when a slight breeze swept the pub signalling the arrival of someone.

And someone recognizable this time, the magical world was typically a small world, which made things like this not terribly surprising. Noting that she seemed to be looking around, he gave her a slight wave, just to at least regard her presence. He wasn't sure whether she was meeting anybody, but wouldn't be surprised if she was.

The waving of a hand caught Melinda's eye, and it only took her a moment to realize just who was attached to that hand. She hesitated slightly, but decided it would be rude to not at least stop by and say hello.

Melinda made her way over to the table at an unhurried pace, but didn't sit once she arrived. She wouldn't unless invited. "Good evening, Theodore," she greeted him with a small smile. "Bit of a surprise seeing you here tonight."

"Good evening, Melinda," Theodore greeted her, noting the slight hesitation, but shrugging it off, attributing it to their most recent interaction. "I suppose it is." He wasn't one to frequent pubs, but the past little while was special.

"I suppose I wanted something a bit more low-key in comparison to the Honeypot," Theodore said in a straightforward, matter-of-fact tone. He took a sip of his drink before asking the old standard. "So how are you?"

"I'm fine, thank you," Melinda responded without thinking. There was another slight hesitation before she added quietly, "And how are you doing?" She wondered if Theodore's nightmares had stopped, but she wasn't sure the question would be welcomed. It was just as well it was left unasked because another question was quick to take it's place. "The Honeypot? What's that? I can't say I've ever heard of it."

"I'm fine," Theodore replied simply to the question. He was alright for now, more or less.

"Oh it's a rather unique locale in Diagon Alley, complete with inexpensive drinks and live entertainment." He wasn't being completely dishonest, at least.

Melinda wasn't quite sure she believed Theodore's too simple assurance that he was all right, but it wouldn't be polite to press further, even if she was concerned. They weren't that close, not any more. not that they'd ever been really. "Well, that's good to hear," she said finally, offering a slight smile.

She wasn't quite sure what to make of his description of the Honeypot. "It sounds interesting. Is it popular?" If it was, surely she would have heard about it from Angie or Ally, be she couldn't recall them mentioning it. "Maybe I'll visit some time this week."

"I suppose it is popular amongst a subset of the population," Theodore said, again remaining rather honest but not completely.

He took a sip of his drink as she spoke her next bit and had he been anyone else he may have choked or spat it out in surprise. But he was able to keep himself composed well enough. "Well do tell me how it goes if you do plan on visiting." He really wondered if she would actually go visit, and had the competing emotions of guilt and curiousity. "I don't think you'd find it that interesting though."

Frowning slightly as she looked down at Theodore, Melinda shifted a little closer to the table to make room to allow someone to pass. "What do you mean? Why wouldn't I find it interesting? You clearly do or you wouldn't frequent it.

"Oh I was just saying that from what I do know of you. I'm just not sure whether you'd find it interesting since it doesn't seem to be your sort of thing. I only go if I need something different than usual and I'd think that it'd fulfill that need." Theodore shrugged and spoke as if he were giving a perfectly logical explanation. Vague but logical.

"How is your family anyways?" He asked, seeing this as a perfectly good time to change the direction of the conversation.

"I enjoy inexpensive drinks and live entertainment as much as anyone, Theodore. Certainly at least as much as you," Melinda pointed out, a little miffed that he seemed to think her so stuffy that she wouldn't enjoy the simple things in life. She made up her mind then and there to visit the Honeypot before the week was out.

The question about her family threw Melinda off for a second, but she recovered quickly with an elegant shrug. "They're well. Business is good, so that makes them happy enough." Of course, they'd be happier if she was married, or at the very least engaged, but she wasn't about to share that with Theodore.

"Well I'm glad to hear that we have that much in common," Theodore said with a shrug. Maybe she'll forget about it anyways as the conversation progresses.

"I'm glad to hear," Theodore replied in a conversational tone. It was only now though that he realized that she was still standing there. "And do feel free to have a seat, if you so wish," he said with a flourish. "Where are my manners? Did you want a drink?"

Melinda almost remarked they she used to thing they had more than just that in common, but she refrained. It would add little to the conversation, such as it was. She felt awkward standing there and Theodore's belated offer of a seat didn't help to dispel the feeling. "No, thank you. I wouldn't want to impose. I...just wanted to say hello and see how you were doing." But as ever, getting an honest answer from him was like trying to wrangle kneazles: frustrating and futile.

"It's not imposing," Theodore said, again trying to be at least somewhat polite. He actually didn't mind her too much, and actually did enjoy her presence. He wasn't sure exactly what it was or why he did what he did in the past, but it was probably for the better. Perhaps it was that he found it difficult to deal with having someone who asked too many questions and seemed far more concerned about him than he felt comfortable with.

"I'm not waiting for anyone nor do I have plans to go anywhere. I won't assume the same is for you, but if that is the case the invitation stands."

Melinda looked down at Theodore, her smile returning but it was small and wry. "Thank you, Theodore. But to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure how to carry on a conversation with a friend who treats me like a stranger. It's my failing, though, not yours." She pat his arm gently. "Enjoy your dinner, Theodore. The shepherd's pie is quite good." Maybe she'd get dinner to go, Melinda thought as she started to walk away. Staying now would just be awkward.

"Good night," Theodore said after her. For a moment he felt something that almost felt like regret after hearing what she had to say. Something like that, but he wasn't quite sure what it was. It was for the better though, he was sure.

It was all in the past. And there was little that can be done to change the past. He had to have done what he did as it would've ended at some point. It was better that it ended before they got overly entangled and it got really messy. He wasn't fond of messy things, whether it was a physical mess such as blood or otherwise.
