Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 01 2003, character: cade warrington, character: roger davies

Who: Roger Davies and Cade Warrington.
What: Examining Dmitri Zurlo's personal effects.
When: November 1, 2003 a bit after noon.
Where: St. Mungo's morgue.
Rating: PG-13 for bodies, bodies everywhere and possible language

Death didn't particularly disturb Cade, but like any other wizard, he didn't seek it out if he didn't have to. Of course, his chosen profession exposed him to it more often than the average person, but that was something he accepted as part of the job. A job that he was only now being allowed to perform in his full capacity as an Auror. He hadn't wished death on Harry Potter, but Cade didn't bother denying the satisfaction he felt at finally have a proper case to work on.

Eager to get to work, Cade arrived in the alley next to Purge and Dowse, Ltd with a quiet pop just a few minutes afternoon. He expected Davies would be a long shortly, but in the meantime, Cade took a drink from the small vial of Invigoration draught he had tucked into his cloak. That should be enough to keep him going until he go off shift tonight.

This was the second time Roger was heading down to the morgue since he started this case. It didn't bother him too much, since he knew he had to stick it out with Cade till he was caught up on the case. Dead bodies was just something you had to get used to working as an Auror, but Roger had been forced to get used to it during the war while he was still a rookie. Now, he just figured he was fortunate when he came across a body that he didn't know.

He'd apparated in an alley nearby the Purge and Dowse, Ltd, and noticed that Cade was near by. So he'd gotten there right on time. "Warrington," Roger said getting the other Auror's attention before he walked up to him. You could never be too careful when walking up to a trained Auror with excellent reflects, who could hex you badly.

"Ready to go in?" Roger asked, reaching into the pocket of his jacket to take out his badge, so they wouldn't have any trouble in the hospital.

Cade straightened when he heard his name called, turning towards the voice as he tucked the small vial back into his cloak. Roger was right in his assessment. If he'd snuck up on Cade, someone would have ended up injured. "Ready, Davies," he greeted the other Auror shortly. Already feeling more alert, Cade made sure the badge pinned to his cloak was visible before slipping around the corner to the specified window and addressed the mannequin behind the glass. "Aurors Warrington and Davies on official duty."

There was a brief pause before the mannequin nodded, and Cade stepped forward through the glass and into the cool, sterile interior of St. Mungo's. He waited just inside the reception area for Roger to follow.

Roger nodded as they headed towards the entrance. He let Cade do their introduction and as soon as Roger knew he was through the glass, he followed. There was bustling activity as usual in the busy hospital lobby. Roger lifted his badge to pin it to his jacket, as he walked over to the reception desk.

"Aurors Davies and Warrington. We'll be visiting the morgue, if you can send a memo down there that we're coming," he said to the pretty receptionist, and giving her a smile. She agreed to do it immediately, and they were free to head to the basement.

"I'd like to see if the Healers came up with anything new. They didn't have a cause of death the last time we checked in," Roger informed Cade as they headed towards the morgue.

Cade resisted the urge to roll his eyes as Roger spoke with the receptionist. "Do you handle everyone that way or just females?" Cade muttered as they made their way down into the bowels of St. Mungo's. The lift ride down was relatively short, but walk down the unnervingly bright white hallway seemed impossibly long. Though Cade supposed the ones making the trip wouldn't be in a state to mind it.

"They should have something by now," Cade said, pushing open the doors at the end of the corridor. The morgue was large and just as blindingly white as the corridor they'd just come down. Unlike the rest of the hospital, it didn't smell of cleanliness. It didn't smell of anything at all, actually, whatever spell was used to keep the smell of bodies from permeating the place seeming to have the side affect of cancelling out any smell whatsoever.

There was a clerk off to one side, blinking at them owilishly from behind large glasses. "You're the Aurors then?"

"What?" Roger asked with mock ignorance. "Just being friendly," he explained but he was smirking. Roger didn't even need to say anything to come off like he was flirting. It was down to the charming smile, and eye contact. "But answer your question, males wouldn't respond well to that approach," Roger said.

Roger was never a big fan of hospitals in the first place, but the morgue was completely different. It still wasn't as bad as going to Azkaban, but it was close. While Roger hated the smell of the disinfectant and illness of the rest of the hospital, it was unnerving to go down the long stark corridor, where there was no smell at all. It was like walking through nothing.

"Yes that's us. We've come to see if there are any updates on the pathology report for the Zurlo cas," Roger explained to the clerk waiting for them.

A snort pretty covered Cade's opinion on Roger's particular brand of "friendly". Cade was more an intimidate first, ask questions later sort of bloke. It just came naturally to him, fed by his general lack of impatience when it came to most people. Which was probably why the clerk shrank away a bit when Cade came closer to get a look at the file he offered up. The clerked was prepared at the very least.

Cade took the file and flipped through it, going right for cause of death. "Huh. 'Cardiac arrest brought on by extreme shock.' Well, that's not extremely helpful." He handed the file to Roger for him to look at, then leaned forward into the clerks space. "Where are Zurlo's things?"

Roger could be intimidating if he wanted to be, but he found in his experience that being friendly worked with people who were willing to help and were innocent. Women especially. Intimidation worked with the criminals much better.

He took the file from Cade so he could read it over himself. "So you're saying that he was scared to death?" Roger said not exactly satisfied with these results. It just gave them more questions and definitely reemphasized the big question. What happened in the Department of Mysteries?

"If the pathology report is complete, we'd appreciate being able to take Mr. Zurlo's personal affects back to the Ministry," Roger clarified with the clerk when Cade decided to take the intimidating approach.

"Apparently. Which means we're proper fucked if we don't find something." Cade didn't sound particularly thrilled with the results of the autopsy to say the last, much for the same reasons Roger wasn't. An unexplained death, with no clues as to how or why? The way things were turning out, this case promised to go nowhere fast. Hopefully there would be something of more use in Zurlo's possessions.

Casting Roger a wan smile and Cade a wary look, the clerk left his perch on his stool for the first time and scurried off to places unknown to retrieve what they needed. "I can't believe they found nothing, not a trace of magic or poison at all." It was a disturbing and frankly aggravating lack of information that made Cade scowl at the spot the clerk had been.

He returned shortly, a small, nondescript grey box in his hands. "This should be everything," he said with only a hint of a stammer as he set the box down on his pristine white desk.

"Back to the crime scene then," was Roger's suggestion, though he didn't seem to enthusiastic about it. They'd already been over it, and they hadn't found anything that would have scared the man to death. Roger knew he wanted to look over Zurlo's whole file anyway. See if the man had a weak heart to begin with, or if it was normal and they really were looking for something terrifying.

"I agree it's hard to believe. Any magic dark enough to kill someone should leave something behind," Roger said, and he was disappointed in the lack of information too. Roger reached for the box that the clerk brought over. "And there was no trace of magic on his personal affects either?" he asked to clarify.

"Back to the crime scene," Cade confirmed. Roger might not have been enthused about returning to the crime scene in the Department of Mysteries, but the thought actually improved Cade's mood a bit. Knowing the results of Zurlo's autopsy might help them look at the scene in a different light. He said as much and added, "I'll take another look at the inventory of what was in the room where Zurlo was found and find out what the items do. It might give us more perspective." Though it might take a while as he wasn't sure all the items had been properly catalogued yet.

"No magic on his person," the clerk confirmed, gaze flitting between the two Aurors. "However, there were traces of a potion in his system. Polyjuice, I believe. It's all in the report."

Cade nodded at this. It had been suspected - there were very few ways Zurlo could have gotten into the Ministry after hours otherwise - but it was good to have confirmation. "All right. There's nothing more for us here, I believe." He looked at the clerk whose head was already shaking 'no'. "Then, let's not waste any more time."

"Sounds like a good idea. You can see if we missed anything," Roger said agreeing with Cade's plan of him over over the crime scene and the inventory. Cade wasn't biased by the information that Roger had investigated already.

He nodded as the clerk answered his questions. "Alright, thanks. If we have any more follow up questions, we'll be back," he said shrinking the files down so he could put them in his pocket.

"Yeah, we're done here. Thank you for your time," Roger said his final words to the clerk, and gestured to Cade that they were ready to leave, and Roger turned back towards the hall.
