Really, when it came right down to it, there wasn't much for a 13-year-old boy to do around here. There was no Game, he didn't have the computer, or internet, he didn't have video games or Pesterchum. He didn't even have the resident junk in his bedroom to futz around with, just the stuff in his sylladex. He could only fly so long, after all.

So he had dragged out Colonel Sassacre's Daunting Text of Magical Frivolity and Practical Japery, and was now reading it on the floor of the front porch. True, it was very large. And rather daunting. But maybe he could get some good ideas for practical jokes to play on people. He needed something to do after all.

"Yes. Fend." John was a weird name too, as far as Fend was concerned. Still, he returned the grin absently, still peering at the book. "I...um. Don't know w-what any of that means. Those things you said. About the book." He gave a little shrug, though it kind of bothered him to admit that.

He held up his right hand, a small bit of wire twisted around one finger. "This is all I've got from home...all I've got that means anything. Been here a w-while, I guess. And yeah, fell asleep, w-woke up here. There w...was a castle before here. And home before there. I'm getting kinda tired of this, to be honest."

"Yeah," he said, laughing a little. "I'll bet." John sat up, crossing his legs. "I heard about there being a castle beforehand from Dave and Vriska. Must have been really weird being taken out of one place, to another and still another. I mean what even is that, right?"

John hefted the book. "Well, it's sort of a book on how to play amusing tricks on people you like. Or people you don't like. How to just...be amusing, in general?" It's just...always been in his family. He and his Dad used to read it together and have a good chuckle over things.

"You know Dave, huh?" Fend wasn't sure what to make of that. "The castle w-was better'n home, so that w...was okay. I'm not sure if here is better'n the castle, though. So right now, it's just annoying."

He squinted at the book. He'd never heard of playing amusing tricks on people you like...or amusing tricks on people you don't like. Those tricks were never amusing, as far as he could tell. "...but...w...why?"

"Yeah, we've been best buddies for a long time!" John grinned. "I don't know, it's kind of nice here. Kind of reminds me of home a little?"

"Why?" He shrugged. "Because it's fun! And if you do it right, the other person laughs too!"

"Your home must be nice, then. Annoying or not, this place is better than home." He sighed and sat down on a step, looking up at John. He wasn't sure how anybody could be best buddies with Dave, but he was going to let that go.

"And if you do it w-wrong?"

"It was pretty nice. It kinda got destroyed by meteors, though. That sucks but..." He shrugged. He still didn't know how to feel about that, especially since it looked like he wasn't getting back to the Game any time soon.

"Welp, if I get the prank wrong and it backfires, people are laughing at me. If I get the prank right and they get mad, then I run like hell and hope I don't get beat up. But that doesn't happen that often."

"Meteors? ...yeah. That does suck." He could definitely see why John liked it here okay, there weren't any meteors for one thing.

At John's explanation, Fend went quiet for a moment and then began to giggle. "Running like hell is something that I'm pretty good at, actually."

"Seriously. I'm not sure how I feel about being here yet, I'm kinda trying not to really think about it!" He grinned but was completely serious--inside. John hated being serious most of the time.

He laughed too. "It's a good life skill." Not that he couldn't fight of course. But it wasn't good to smash non-game constructs with a hammer. They don't learn anything that way.

"You don't know the half of it..." Because Fend couldn't fight at all, no matter what he told Dave. Running was the best life skill he had.

I guess you get used to being places, especially if you don't think about it."
