Really, when it came right down to it, there wasn't much for a 13-year-old boy to do around here. There was no Game, he didn't have the computer, or internet, he didn't have video games or Pesterchum. He didn't even have the resident junk in his bedroom to futz around with, just the stuff in his sylladex. He could only fly so long, after all.

So he had dragged out Colonel Sassacre's Daunting Text of Magical Frivolity and Practical Japery, and was now reading it on the floor of the front porch. True, it was very large. And rather daunting. But maybe he could get some good ideas for practical jokes to play on people. He needed something to do after all.

Derreck was heading by to go to town. He promised Devon a nice dinner for the night since the woman had been living off the food in the diner and light meals she made for herself (read Sandwiches and noodles). He noticed a young boy as he walked and called out a warm greeting and a wave, tail swaying about his legs and ears twitching some.

((ooc: Go for it. Pester him to your hearts content...I may drop one or two more of my lovelies on you. :D))

John grinned and waved to the...cat-dude. wow, there were really a lot of strange people here!

"Hi!"

The man paused and smiled. "Reading anything interesting today?"

John laughed. "Well, it's a practical joke book. So watch out for me!"

He was kidding. Sort of.

Mostly, he'd only prank people he knew. It was funnier that way.

"Oh?" Now he looked curious. "I use to be a bit of a prankster when I was a kitten...so you may have a challenge." Derreck grinned.

John grinned. "It's always cool to meet a fellow prankster! Now you've got to be on your guard because I do love a challenge."

This could really up his prankster's gambit!

"So...I don't think I've ever met a cat-person before! That's pretty neat."

Derreck laughed warmly, heading over to the teen's deck. "Just make sure you keep your pranks between us if you do." Yep he basically just gave John permission to try.

He smiled. "I'm not from the 20th or 21st centuries. I'm from the 51st. I'm part cat-kind, part human." He lightly tugged on one his own ears in amusement before looking down at the boy's book. "Jeez...That's not a book that's a weapon of mass destruction."

He winked. "Got it." Oh, the fun he would have!

"Whoa. Are you from like...a different Earth, or something? Or another planet?" John hefted the book. "Yeah, it's pretty heavy! It's been in my family for a long time, one of my ancestors wrote it? Pranking's been in my family for generations."

"Another planet and time." He answered with an easy smile. "Humans have spread out into the universe. Boldly go you know?" He studied the book. "Quite the family tradition...May I?" He gestured to the book.

Fend was making an effort to get out of the cottage more. Not a huge effort, but he was only human. Only human, and only Fend.

And so, in this effort, he had wandered outside, at which time, he noticed a boy. An actual, human (or at least human-looking boy. He couldn't tell from a distance if they were close in age, but it was definitely worth investigating.

Coming closer, the interest in the boy waned a bit as he noticed the giant BOOK the boy was reading. Books were precious and how he missed the library at the Castle...

"Uh. Uh, excuse me? W....wh-what're you reading?" Now was his attempt to be pleasant and likeable. If only for the book.

John blinked up at the boy--he looked older than John did, but skinnier. He turned the book around with an effort, to show him the title.

"It's kind of the only book I have, and I'm really kind of bored. I'm John. What's your name?" He grinned at the other boy, because he looked kind of nervous.

"Oh. Uhm. My name is Fend? It's good to meet you, John." Pleasant and personable. Yes. He came closer, pushing his hair from his eyes to squint at the title. Huh. He...knew some of the words? But none of them made sense. Weird. "Any book is more books that I've got. W-what's it about?"

"Fend? Hi." Fend was kind of a weird name but there were a lot of really different people here! John grinned. "Oh, all sorts of pranks and jokes that you can pull on people. Some magic tricks, stuff like that. One of my great-great relations wrote it a really long time ago and it's...kind of large, and the words are kind of...yeah. Old fashioned." He looked at the book, biting his lip.

"Still, it's kind of all I have from home." He sat up a little. "Have you been here long? I just sort of woke up here, it's weird."

"Yes. Fend." John was a weird name too, as far as Fend was concerned. Still, he returned the grin absently, still peering at the book. "I...um. Don't know w-what any of that means. Those things you said. About the book." He gave a little shrug, though it kind of bothered him to admit that.

He held up his right hand, a small bit of wire twisted around one finger. "This is all I've got from home...all I've got that means anything. Been here a w-while, I guess. And yeah, fell asleep, w-woke up here. There w...was a castle before here. And home before there. I'm getting kinda tired of this, to be honest."

"Yeah," he said, laughing a little. "I'll bet." John sat up, crossing his legs. "I heard about there being a castle beforehand from Dave and Vriska. Must have been really weird being taken out of one place, to another and still another. I mean what even is that, right?"

John hefted the book. "Well, it's sort of a book on how to play amusing tricks on people you like. Or people you don't like. How to just...be amusing, in general?" It's just...always been in his family. He and his Dad used to read it together and have a good chuckle over things.

"You know Dave, huh?" Fend wasn't sure what to make of that. "The castle w-was better'n home, so that w...was okay. I'm not sure if here is better'n the castle, though. So right now, it's just annoying."

He squinted at the book. He'd never heard of playing amusing tricks on people you like...or amusing tricks on people you don't like. Those tricks were never amusing, as far as he could tell. "...but...w...why?"

"Yeah, we've been best buddies for a long time!" John grinned. "I don't know, it's kind of nice here. Kind of reminds me of home a little?"

"Why?" He shrugged. "Because it's fun! And if you do it right, the other person laughs too!"

"Your home must be nice, then. Annoying or not, this place is better than home." He sighed and sat down on a step, looking up at John. He wasn't sure how anybody could be best buddies with Dave, but he was going to let that go.

"And if you do it w-wrong?"

"It was pretty nice. It kinda got destroyed by meteors, though. That sucks but..." He shrugged. He still didn't know how to feel about that, especially since it looked like he wasn't getting back to the Game any time soon.

"Welp, if I get the prank wrong and it backfires, people are laughing at me. If I get the prank right and they get mad, then I run like hell and hope I don't get beat up. But that doesn't happen that often."

"Meteors? ...yeah. That does suck." He could definitely see why John liked it here okay, there weren't any meteors for one thing.

At John's explanation, Fend went quiet for a moment and then began to giggle. "Running like hell is something that I'm pretty good at, actually."

"Seriously. I'm not sure how I feel about being here yet, I'm kinda trying not to really think about it!" He grinned but was completely serious--inside. John hated being serious most of the time.

He laughed too. "It's a good life skill." Not that he couldn't fight of course. But it wasn't good to smash non-game constructs with a hammer. They don't learn anything that way.

"You don't know the half of it..." Because Fend couldn't fight at all, no matter what he told Dave. Running was the best life skill he had.

I guess you get used to being places, especially if you don't think about it."

Strolling by John's house, Vriska spotted him out on the porch and decided to stop and talk to him. She was curious how he'd react to her being all human-y now, too.

"Hey, John," she said, walking up to him and tapping his knee with her foot.

"...Huh?"

Yep, that's zero recognition, there. Though the clothes should give it away. (John, you dummy.)

Vriska grinned, finding it sort of amusing that he didn't recognize her. "Whaaaaaaaat, you don't recognize me? ...Well, you've got good reason to, but come on, John, I thought you were better than that," she said, tossing her hair back.

John blinked at her but then connected the dots between Vriska's clothes and Vriska's quirk and the human girl standing in front of him and leaned forward.

"...Vriska?"

Wow, she was really kinda pretty like this! Not that she wasn't as a troll too, but...seriously, wow.

"Yeah...I can't imagine what it would be like the other way--like if I turned into a troll! I'd probably keep smashing into things with my horns or biting my own lip off or something."

He grinned at her, then blushed a little. "You're really pretty though. I mean, not that you aren't as a troll, but...yeah."

Then she blushed, looking away and smiling a bit. "Heh...thanks, John."
