WHO: Kirk, Spock, Jake Sully and Neytiri
WHAT: New people! Kirk and Spock save a couple of kidnapped Na'vi.

Captain James T. Kirk was so. Friggin'. Bored. He wanted to be out discovering things, or discovering things he could shoot at, or just shooting at things. He'd behaved relatively well lately, and that meant nothing really interesting ever happened. ...Ever. His crew seemed to be all comfy cosy on Metis, taking a break, taking bets on when Captain Kirk would start some shit around here already.

The Captain had sunk so low as to go shopping. With Spock. For, you know, souvenirs and that sort of thing. And, all right, maybe Jim was looking for a little bit of trouble, too. They were down in the less reputable part of the docks---needless to say, their jackets covered their Starfleet insignia. They didn't need to be attacked just yet.

So far, they hadn't seen anything blatantly illegal, until---

"Mr. Spock. Would you say those humanoids in that pen are part of the BDSM community, or would you call that involuntary auctioning?"

Spock was making sure that Jim stayed out of trouble, that he didn't drink or get into unnecessary fights. He needed to understand that they were diplomats and explorers, not warriors. Exploration was necessary, and exploring all areas was also necessary, but he knew what Jim was up to.

"Sir? The B-D-S-what?" Spock glanced over, his hands clasped behind his back.

"Did I just know something you don't know?" Whoa. Let Jim bathe in that thought for a moment. "It's a thing that people do when they like being tied up---that wasn't even the right answer. That's not the point, you know that wasn't an actual question."

Spock raised his eyebrows, ears perking a little. "No, that isn't the right answer," he said, with the slightest twitch of his mouth. "And no, that wasn't the actual question. The actual question..." His brow furrowed and he stepped past Jim, muttering, "B-D-S-M, really now."

He didn't need to observe the situation for long. "They're far from home," he said, glancing at Jim briefly. "Blue skin, tails, standing several feet taller than human or Vulcan? Perfect examples of one of Earth's most horrifying grievances against a pre-warp culture..." He paused for a moment, as if to let Jim speak, but apparently Jim took too long. "And given that a pre-warp species cannot willingly leave their own planet and achieve faster-than-light travel" ----this was remedial and Spock was somewhat smug---- "what do you conclude? Sir."

One of the Na'vi howled, hissing and snarling like an animal. He was bound tightly with ropes and chains to the point where he couldn't move, chained back to back with a female----they were both restricted and the male was clearly hurt, a slight wound in his shoulder dripping blood.

They were primitive, they weren't beings capable of warp speed or space travel----and on a planet like Metis, with its ports, it meant they were lesser beings, even if they towered above the humans.

Oh, yeah. It was clearly involuntary auctioning.

"Spock, one of these days, I'll order you to get yourself a sense of humor." Jim rolled his eyes. "You get a look at them and see if you can calm them down a bit; I'll get what I can out of the vendor before we go Starfleet on his ass." He smacked Spock on the arm, almost friendly about it, before sauntering up to the trader.

"Na'vi, huh? Don't see them around much." Maybe Jim was just such a jackass by default that this sort of act came easy. He always seemed just on the verge of getting himself into trouble, or like he'd just had something to drink. It was the sort of attitude that tended to put black market traders at ease, leaving Spock on his own while Jim pretended to be interested.

Spock moved closer to the captives, silent. He didn't play-act like Jim did. It wasn't exactly a strong point for him. Instead, he was checking their bonds----solid. These two were fighters. They weren't easy to catch.

The vendor glanced toward Jim. "Be willing to bet they're the first couple you've seen. Could make anyone some nice cash. Just charge admission. But their use ain't up to me."

The female shrieked, hissing when Spock came in for a look and keeping her teeth bared---except when she spat in his direction. "Savage!" she hissed. "Monster!" She switched languages, a string of words pouring out of her mouth so full of hard consonants and clicks that it sounded as if she was throwing stones at him. They weren't compliments.

Spock barely blinked. The spit, fortunately, managed to miss him. "I am not here to harm you in any way," he said, his voice low. "I am weaponless and without malice." Were Uhura here, she might have been able to speak their language to set them at ease.

In his eyes, the Na'vi were damaged. It went against the Prime Directive, that pre-warp cultures weren't to be interfered with. They'd been interfered with. She was speaking English. And now this? The level of disrespect was appalling.

Meanwhile, the vendor was still chatting with Jim. "Most people don't visit Pandora anymore, not after Earth was driven out, but that just means the best souvenirs are still for the taking." Yeah. People really did talk like that, apparently.

"Wow." Jim nodded. Yes, of course, very impressive. "And this is all on the down-low? I mean, it's not like the Feds want us rooting around in pre-warp worlds like that." He smirked a bit, leaning in like a conspirator. "It's gotta jack the price up when you're fencing something this black, am I right?"

The vendor whistled low, chuckling. "Yeah, well, the Na'vi are already screwed, if you follow. Not like we went in when they hadn't made contact. --The male's bleeding, but don't let that put you off. It's a scratch."

Jim shook his head. "Nah. Doesn't put me off. You know what puts me off, though?" Oh, Jim loved this part of the job. Thank you, Starfleet. He reached into his jacket, pulling out his ID card and showing it to the vendor. "Humanoid trafficking. Hands up, mouth shut." But please don't, Kirk would love to punch you in the face, sir.

The moment the badge was flashed, any potential buyers scattered. They ran off as quickly as they could, leaving the vendor and his lackeys----lackeys who also happened to have some very, very big guns, and lackeys who were now on the ground thanks to quick shots from a phaser set to stun. Spock was silently and efficiently going through their pockets in order to locate the keys for the shackles.

Jim might have had his desires, but it was the vendor who punched the Starfleet Captain in the face.

Only once! Only once! It had been a cheap shot. Whatever. Guy went down eventually, anyway. While Spock went rifling around for the keys, Kirk took one of the guns and smashed the hell out of the gate's lock, swinging open the pen.

"You're gonna be fine, I promise. We won't hurt you."

Jim usually chose to ignore Spock's little disapproving looks. Spock found a lot of things distasteful and it was hard to keep track of them all. Taking a knife off of one of the vendor's lackeys, he went to cut up the ropes while Spock took care of the chains.

"You speak pretty good English for a Na'vi."

"Yeah? How many Na'vi do you know? Thanks," he said once his hands were free. He rubbed his wrists, looking over the blisters made by the ropes, and twisted his body so he could touch the female's shoulder. And then, mostly to himself: "'Pretty good.' Love it."

The female touched his hand, and it was obvious for a moment that she actually had one less finger than he did, and not in a lost-in-it-battle sort of way. She muttered to him, and the only word Jim could really make out sounded like "scoun", whatever that meant.

"It's unusual for non-humans on pre-warp worlds to speak it." But from the way he sounded---him, not her---he'd heard English a lot. He'd sworn in English, even muttered in English. This wasn't an ordinary backwater planet alien. "But you already knew that, didn't you?"

"Yeah, I know it. Earth set up a colony on Pandora. Put up a school." And yet, the way he explained it, it still didn't seem like he learned it in a school room. He talked more like Jim than anyone else.

Once his feet were free, he climbed out of the pen to stretch his legs. He towered at least three feet above Jim, his bare toes curling against the ground. And then, like he realized he was being rude: "Thank you. Thanks. A lot."

"It is rude to pry." The male seemed to take being rescued pretty well, but his friend? Her pride was wounded, much like her wrists, and her accent was completely different. Despite that, it was clear that they knew each other. "Your help is appreciated, but it is rude."

The male flashed a smile. "Not from Ohio," he said, "but close." It was just smart enough to sound sarcastic, because of course it wasn't true. Almost absentmindedly, like an unconscious habit, he took the female's hand and looked over her wrist, examining the blisters. He nudged her with his nose, pressed his mouth lightly to her ear, murmured in their language.

Jim watched them, folding his arms across his chest. "Hn." He wasn't an idiot. Jim knew about the Avatar program, about the confrontation that led to Earth's expulsion from Pandora. He'd studied what they knew of the Na'vi, just like everyone else, and what he didn't remember was any significant differences between males and females, apart from the obvious organs. And yet, here they were, and if these Na'vi weren't mated, they were well on their way.

It didn't occur to Jim (yet) that the male might have been a living Avatar. It was on record that the machines wouldn't live past a certain expiration date that had come up years ago, and the Na'vi didn't have the technology to keep them running. In any case, they'd been taught that the Na'vi had outright rejected the Avatars. It didn't add up.

"Do you two have names? ...That I can pronounce?"

"Pre-warp planets like yours are protected under Starfleet's Prime Directive," said Spock. "We are not to interfere with the natural evolution of your home world. Neytiri cocked her head, considering this. "We have had interference before already. A few more Sky People will be nothing." She had her eyes on Spock; he was clearly the more competent one. "If you betray us, we will kill you. And it will not be swift. If you need one of us to talk to your Star Fleet for your clearance, we will do so."

Neytiri seemed reluctant at best, uncomfortable at worst. She laid her hand on Jake's arm, touching her forehead to the back of his head. But she wasn't arguing, which probably meant she would follow him wherever he decided to go.

Jake's hand covered hers. It was obvious that he knew she didn't want to go explore, but didn't want to be alone. They were in unfamiliar territory. The Na'vi didn't travel to other worlds. The Sky People had visited from Earth, but no one else had been to Pandora before.

"Thank you. Again," Jake said to Jim. He shifted uncomfortably, running a hand down his chest. His captors had stripped him of his weapons and he was practically naked in the winter chill. It was cloudy now, and just starting to rain----just barely. "It's friggin' cold, is it always this cold?"

"I think it's winter," Jim said. "Or it damn well better be." He did love the Enterprise's nice, comfortable temperature control and lack of weather. "There's gotta be a merchant around here who sells something your size. We'll go make sure you don't get hypothermia and---you drink? We'll get something to drink." Or Jim can get a drink without you. Either or.

"Drink? Yeah, of course I----drink? As in booze?" Jake chuckled, ran a hand over his mouth. "I haven't had a drink in... wow. Uh. Yeah, we could use some robes, and I could use a drink." He glanced back at Neytiri. "What about you?" he asked in their language. "We'll find something warm."

At the mention of being cold, it was more apparent that Neytiri was standing close because she was comfortable, and because it was freezing for them. Neither of them were even wearing a shirt, Neytiri's breasts covered only by some sort of necklace. "I'll take your lead. I don't want you to freeze to death out in the open."

"Indoors will be warmer. I can already tell you won't like it here. Just stay by me." Jake slid his arms around Neytiri but it wasn't going to do much to keep her warm. He lightly kissed her ear and rubbed his hands quickly over her arms, hoping the friction would do some good.

Jake nudged her reassuringly with his nose and then lifted his head to look at Jim. "We don't need much, just a couple of big blankets, put some sleeves in, and then after being trapped in that cage for however long, I could definitely use a drink."
