RP: Official Party
Who: Everyone
Where: Military CO's home
When: Friday, April 8, 2011
Summary: After the visit, it's time to party, or pretend to

The visit had gone as well as expected. They all knew that official visits only showed you what they wanted you to show, and that was exacty what Leon had done. He hadn't even shown them the best and brightest, too afraid that they would be too afraid if they saw some of what they had accomplished in three months. No, it was a juggling act between not showing too much, but showing enough progress to justify the current budgetary expenses. All in all, Leon was confident that they had done an okay job.

That left them with the party. A few more hours to go and they'd be free. The party was held at the CO's home. All top officers were present. Unlike the usual parties, spouses were missing. He was sure that no one was pleased with that, but they couldn't allow civilians in a base like this. That meant that almost everyone present was in uniform, except for the ICIS employees.

Hetty had done a great job, especially considering the short time they had. Everyone looked impeccable. Now, if their words would be as impeccable, they'd make it through the night unscathed.

"With so many medals in the room, I don't think it's possible to forget that," she said behind her glass, still smiling.

The change of subject was welcome, however. She much preferred to talk about things she could talk about without looking over her shoulder at who might be nearby. "Yes, there wasn't much to move. Just my bedroom furniture really, Neal and Peter had furniture already so Mikey took ours since the people he moved in with all came from the hotel and had nothing."

"Do you like the house?" she asked. She had loved the first one, she was getting used to this one. It took longer settling in this time, but she was getting there.

The question why he'd not want to wear something that he thought good looking was on the tip of her tongue, but she opted for not asking. She could imagine (a few) situations where you'd want something else. Something more comfortable, for instance. "I'm sure," she said with a smile, though she wasn't. She couldn't imagine that there would be enough instances like this and otherwise she was the one in the lab. She wasn't about to be sent out on whatever it was they did on ops.

It was a sign of his childhood that he didn't even pay attention to all the medals and insignia. They were there, he ignored them, it was all good, but at least she seemed to enjoy talking about the house.

"Yes, same with us. Morgan had some stuff, but we all went for the very spartan look, so it was good. I don't think I could live in a place with too many things." The question gave him pause. "You know, I haven't thought about it that way. I had a house at home one that I picked, but growing up, we lived on post so I never got used to the idea of 'picking' your house. You go were the Army sends you. As long as there's room and the yard is kept up to regulations, you're good to go."

Dom could tell that she thought that it would never happen, but then she felt like a princess, so she probably thought that all ops were like this. "Hopefully you won't," he said. The moment that she was on the field, it'd mean that they were all on the run, and every op was a way to survive. It wouldn't be nice.

"You're not the first I hear say that," she said, thinking of her conversation with John. "I guess it's just hard to imagine, having grown up on a farm. The first time I moved was when I moved to Seattle. It was a huge deal. I was so homesick the first months, but it got better."

"Would you have gone for the spartan look if you got to pick freely for yourself too?" she asked, curious if it was his taste or the circumstances that dictated the interior design.

"Well, I'm an Army brat and Kensi is a Marine brat. The longest you stay on post is three years, and that's if you lucky. After that, you move, and you don't pick the house when you get to the new post. You are given whatever is available for a family your size. You don't even get to pick how many bedrooms. The Army decides everything," Dom explained, although it was so normal for him that it never crossed his mind to complain about housing.

"Oh God, yes," he said, laughing. "I guess it comes from moving around so much. Even in LA, I have very little, no real paintings on the walls. The only things I keep are on the refrigerator, but everything has a sleek look. I'm just happy that everyone else in the house agrees with me."

"Back home we had decorations everywhere, I have a hard time thinking of anything sleek in our house. Everything had a history too, it wasn't just things you bought. It had either run in the family, or one of us made it when we were young, or it was a gift from someone. The furniture excluded of course, we bought those when needed, but everything was bought to last. At summer mum would put herbs from the garden in bouquets and hang in the ceiling to dry." She smiled. "Pretty much as far away from sleek and spartan as you can come."

"I'm not quite as extreme as my mother," she laughed. "In my case it's most likely books and magazines that cover every possible surface. Not that I have a chance to decorate much, I've been sharing houses and flats since moving away from home."

"But you didn't have to pack up and move every few years," he pointed out. "There are also standards about what you can have outside, what you can plant. You get fined if you don't follow regulations, and if there are too many tickets, you can be kicked out from the post. You can have decorations on the lawn, just green grass, and even on the porch, you can have a flag, a chair or a bench, but not much more."

Dom was getting twitchy just imagining a house like that. "I have plenty of books. They are arranged in shelves, by authors and by title, dusted twice a week. Same with the CDs, DVDs, not that I have many here, but home. Everything has a place."

If Dom was getting twitchy hearing about her childhood home, she was getting twitchy by listening to him talk about the rules for their front yards. Granted they were small here, and likely everywhere on bases, but she couldn't help but to think about the herbal gardens and flowerbeds back home. They'd been anything but standard.

"As I said, I've never had a house of my own, but I think I'd want something in between. Not a farm with a huge garden, but nothing like that either. That, of course, would have to depend on time, as a surgeon that's in rather short supply."

"My books have their place too, until I read them and leave them by the bed. Daytime I'm fine, but I read before I sleep and things tend to end up by the bed and stay there for a while."

"I don't know. I like it, but I have a mathematical mind. I like all those geometric lines. I can't stand that are out of order," he said, and then grinned. "Agents' time is limited too. It's so much easier when everything has a place."

Once again Dom was imagining sleeping with books around and fighting the urge to groan. "I admit that I put them back in the morning. I don't like leaving thins out of place." That reminded him of the plates he had left in the sink the day he'd been kidnapped, and Kensi had known that it would bother him to have things that were dirty and out of place. Looking around, he found his partner with his eyes. "If you'll excuse me, I have to find Kensi. It was nice speaking with you."
