RP: Labor Day
Who: Everyone
Where: Outside the school
When: September 3, 2012
Summary: It's another federal holiday

Once upon a time, holidays meant a chance to stay out late at night, fuck more people, take more E, drink more beer. Nowadays, he felt like he was living some suburban nightmare, or Michael's dream, but Brian did everything the best that he could, even nightmares.

The grills were set up. The food was the best you could and should have during a federal holiday, which meant burgers, hot dogs, steaks, chips, dips, veggies and fruit and most importantly a keg. He had also scored some other stuff at the village on Saturday night, but that wasn't something that he shared and not for lack of want, which was the reason why so little went so far.

The day was spent outside. There was football. There was Savannah playing the cheerleader. There were blankets with babies. There were dogs all around, including Nakita, Derek's new dog. All in all, it was the all American picnic.

Brian needed a lot more beer to deal with that.

"If I liked football, food, and togetherness, I'd be having fun. Luckily, I do. Mostly the food and togetherness that doesn't involve physical torture that passes for exercise around here." Claudia held a plate with a mound of chips with a glob of dip. She tipped her head to the ongoing game. "No football playing for you?"

Eric shook his head. "Nah, not really my kind of fun," he said. "I mean I could if I wanted to, but it's more fun when powers are involved." Not that he'd joined here anytime voluntary, while at home he would have at least considered it.

"I notice you're not playing either?"

"Not too much into the team sports. Geek, party of one." Claudia pointed to herself. "Sometimes Pete would give me puppy eyes until I gave in and played with him, but that really was like playing with a puppy. Throw the ball, he fetches, and brings it back." Of course, they usually used the 1935 Notre Dame/Ohio State game football, the "Hail Mary", which was always caught no matter how badly thrown.

"Want to pop a squat?" Claudia asked, indicating the grass.

"I'm more of a surfer myself," Eric replied with a slight laugh. "When I'm not in front of the screen that is. Of course here surfing isn't really on the agenda so I'm pretty much stuck with the screen." He really did miss surfing. It was something he'd taken for granted for most of his life, and now it wasn't an option nor was it likely to be for a long time.

"This Pete, was he your boyfriend? Or just a friend?" he asked.

It took the gesture for Eric to realize what she was suggesting and he smiled and nodded. "Sure," he said taking a sip from his cup. "I've never heard that expression before," he said as they took a seat in the grass. "Is it common where you come from or some local variety?"

"Riding the waves. Awesome. Cowabunga, dude." Claudia made the surfer sign. "Surfers are usually skaters or snowboarders, too, in the winter months, or so I've heard. We're on a mountain. Maybe you'll get lucky."

Claudia snorted. "Uh, no. Pete's a friend and co-worker. Kind of like a brother from another mother. Which he'd have to be, since mine's dead."

Legs folded, plate in her lap, she dipped a chip and munched on it. "I've been told my speaking is not that of normal Earthlings. I pick up strange things, retain, and reuse. Some people recycle trash, I recycle verbage. And trash, because hello planet, only one we currently got."

Eric thought about it. "You're not the first to tell me I can have fun in the snow," he said. "I never really been, but there is a first for everything, right?" He vaguely remembered a conversation with Nell, about having fun in the snow. It seemed like it was like a lifetime ago.

"Oh," he answered when she went on. It was such a random piece of very personal information. "I'm sorry to hear that. Were you very young?"

"Is it, though?" Eric asked. "With the existence of different dimensions, with different history and technology, what happens if we pollute in one dimension but find some technology to get perfectly clean energy using our own waste in another?" he asked. "Can the earth die in one dimension and still exist in another and if it can, do we only have one planet?"

"I'm all for trying new things, trying my best, and trying not to get arrested. So I say, go for it." Claudia crunched another chip.

"And thanks. Yeah, it's been a long time," she said. "Here's the brief and glorious biography of Claudia Donovan: parents died in car crash, brother raised me until he vaporized in a science experiement, foster home, foster home, apartment, psych ward, found out brother not actually vaporized - yay - and rescued him, got hired by the coolest division ever of the Secret Service, and eventually end up in another dimension sitting on the grass eating chips with someone from yet another dimension. My life, kinda crazy, kinda not."

Claudia grinned at the multiverse babble. "Depends on what theory you subscribe to within the multiverse. There's a multi-world interpretation. Also, you gotta factor in when the actual division is made. Is it truly every decision leads that leads to another universe being made, or did those universes, or dimensions, exist to begin with since the big bang? Heavy, brain-twisting stuff."

"if I get arrested here, it would be a bit more serious than back home and not just for me either." No if one of them got caught it was bad news for all of them. "Though somehow I don't think snowboarding will lead to it." He couldn't believe he was actually thinking of this as an option. Snowboarding? He, who hated the snow and cold and damned the winter for not being a good time to wear sandals and shorts? Life really was strange here.

Eric's eyes grew bigger as she went on and he wondered how much of that was even advisable to tell him. "Wow, that's... wow." He looked around the space before leaning in. "I'm not even going to ask what vaporized means, but you might want to limit who you share that story with."

He leaned back when the topic returned to what different dimensions were. "Even more so to what the actual truth is," Eric answered with a grin. "Which we have yet to figure out. Now we can figure that out then maybe we can figure out a way to get home, but from the looks of it that will take a while."

Claudia waved her hand dismissively. "I got the what not to share spiel from Director Vance. That part, actually normal. Science experiments go wrong all the time. And since I'm in another dimension, it's also now the norm. How wacky is that? But that's why I know we'll get home again. Hopefully, it won't take twelve years because I so don't want the lecture that comes after being gone that long."

Eric didn't even hide his surprise that she'd already been told to keep this quiet and still had opted to tell him. "Accidents may happen but in my dimension vaporization doesn't, nor does bringing someone back from it," Eric said with a smile. "To me it sounds like some pretty different tech in play. Completely cool, in a strange, dangerous way, but cool."

"Look, generally if the Director tells you something, it's for good reasons," he added helpfully, his voice low as he leaned in. Mike could of course hear, but he doubted he'd care too much. "I'm not saying don't tell anyone, but just - well don't tell anyone unless the Director asks you to." He laughed a bit. "I suppose I am telling you not to tell anyone," he said with a grin. "Just not everyone can handle it, besides if we're caught... well we can't share what we don't know."

"Am I getting too lecturing?" he asked. "Because we can talk about something completely different, like what you like to do for fun. We covered me, now it's your turn. Other than gaming, what gets you going?"

"It wasn't actual vaporization, it turned out to be intra-dimensional travel. Sort of. Josh kinda got stuck in between, in limbo land," Claudia said. "Artie and I, that's my boss, figured out a way to get him out, using things that I can't tell you about - see I can keep quiet. Anyway, I told Director Vance I'd be happy to help out with the whole finding a way to get home thing since I have experience in that field, but turns out the tech is totally different here. I'm still tearing down the OS to learn how it works, and I haven't had to do that since Windows became the new DOS."

Claudia crunched a few more chips. "Guitar playing, definitely. I got to play Jimi Hendrix's guitar once. One of the best days ever. I also invent or rejigger a lot of stuff to make it work better. Give me a set of specs from any time period, and I'm so there. Da Vinci is like a rock god of inventors to me."

Eric quickly looked around them as Claudia was speaking, making sure no one was close enough to hear (though he could do nothing about Mike if he listened). If Vance heard her speak about things he'd asked her to be quiet about, or was told about it, she would be in a lot of trouble. Vance didn't take kindly to people disrespecting his orders.

"You'll need to keep quiet about a bit more things than what your boss at home wanted you to keep quiet about here," he said. "Vance has ways to know when someone disobeys him, and he doesn't like it and trust me, you do not want to get on his bad side."

"If you want help with the tech here though, I'm more than willing to help," he added. "I've had a while to figuring things out, it will make catching up faster."

"Jimi Hendrix's guitar? That's impressive," Eric said, taking a sip of his beer. He lit up though as Claudia mentioned inventing things. "What kind of things did you invent?" he asked, pausing after he'd asked the question. "Without the details of your technology that would mean disobeying orders," he added as a second thought. "I used to build a few things myself back home, on weekends. Things like improved earpieces and buttoncams." He wondered if he shouldn't see if he could find parts for at least the earpieces here too, if he could find a way for them to work it would make communicating easier when teams were out."

"Huh. Okay. I don't know how things that actually happen here and at home can fall under the quiet rule, but I'll go with you on it," Claudia said. She wasn't sure what she could really talk about because of it, then. She'd have to keep everything extra generic and vague.

"Very fuzzily, since now I don't know what I can and can't say, a communication system, a restraint system, a weapon system, a flight system, a cleaning system, a pager-like system, and a recharging system. Plus a few other odds and ends that teenage girls find useful and freebies for adult girls who don't want to have to pay bills for things."

Eric chuckled. "Sorry, but I can't really help you there. You might want to talk to the Director and go over the details with him if you're unsure though. I just don't want you to get in trouble."

"That sounds cool though," he said. "Once you've figured out what you can and can't share maybe we can see what we can make around here?" he suggested.

"That'd be cool. Weekends can't be all about gaming and jamming. Well, they can, especially when it a really good session, but my interest does diversify into the land of the hardware and electronics stores."
