RP: Labor Day
Who: Everyone
Where: Outside the school
When: September 3, 2012
Summary: It's another federal holiday

Once upon a time, holidays meant a chance to stay out late at night, fuck more people, take more E, drink more beer. Nowadays, he felt like he was living some suburban nightmare, or Michael's dream, but Brian did everything the best that he could, even nightmares.

The grills were set up. The food was the best you could and should have during a federal holiday, which meant burgers, hot dogs, steaks, chips, dips, veggies and fruit and most importantly a keg. He had also scored some other stuff at the village on Saturday night, but that wasn't something that he shared and not for lack of want, which was the reason why so little went so far.

The day was spent outside. There was football. There was Savannah playing the cheerleader. There were blankets with babies. There were dogs all around, including Nakita, Derek's new dog. All in all, it was the all American picnic.

Brian needed a lot more beer to deal with that.

Nate was in too much pain from normal training to want to spend today in a football match, but the barbecue was nice and so was the weather and he'd never minded watching others have fun.

The amount of alcohol was tempting, but he'd stayed sober for over six months so far and luckily neither beer nor drinks had never been his first choices. Whiskey was a harder temptation, but it wasn't for nothing he'd chosen to live above a bar when he first cleaned up, he was used to punishing himself.

Picking up a bottle of water, he walked over to the sidelines of where they were playing in order to watch.

Today was just like every other holiday on the campaign trail: horrible. Too much bad food, too many kids and too little alcohol to put up with the first two. She would need some malox later.

At least she didn't have to play football. That was reserved for the young crowd. From the way they were playing, they took football pretty seriously. She wouldn't be surprised if there'd be bruises at the end of the game. At least Doug and TJ were smart enough to stay away from any situation that could get them hurt.

She was still watching the game, mostly to make sure that the boys were all right when a man moved closer. She really didn't like that people could just step in close now that her protective detail had disappeared, but she smiled anyway. "Football fan?"

Nate looked up at the sound of the new woman's voice. Even if he hadn't known that she'd been a politician on her way to becoming the President she carried herself with the kind of self confidence and determination that only came with power. "Only if it's the Superbowl," he admitted. "I'm more of a baseball fan, although with any sport it's all about context."

"Nathan Ford," he introduced himself, offering her his hand.

Elaine mentally groaned. Baseball was even more boring than football, but she said nothing. People could enjoy their little games, while she played the real ones with international repercussions. "I must admit that I'm not much of a sport fan, but I am a worried mother."

"Elaine Barrish Hammond." she had stopped using Hammond with the divorce, but here people wouldn't know who they were and the last name became important once more. "It's a pleasure to meet you," she added, shaking his hand.

"Not many here are of that disposition," Nate answered. "But at least some of us find art, culture or politics more entertaining than football."

"I can understand being worried, especially in this crowd. Though your sons look clever enough to stay away from the ones who takes this game a bit too seriously." Which were most of them.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too, even if I wish circumstances were better than this." Finding Eliot alive as a bonus, but he would have preferred them all being back home the way things used to be.

"Really?" Elaine answered. "I was under the impression that a great many of those people were federal agents. In my dimension, they usually need a college degree, speak a few languages, and then they have to take courses continuously. Even then, they only take the best and brightest. They just come with a gun and very high competitive drives. Things must be different in your dimension."

Turning her head, she stared at him. "Forgive me, but I must have been in politics for too long to see anything entertaining in them. When every decision you make determines who lives and dies, who gets the money to survive or not, the entertainment value disappears."

She smirked. "Again, if they are federal agents, I would expect all of them to take everything they do too seriously. It's how they think and my boys have been around agents long enough to know it."

She nodded. There was no point in mentioning that under normal circumstances, they would have never met.

"I meant not interested in sports," Nate clarified with a laugh. "A lot of people who speak a number of languages and qualify as the best and the brightest do still find sports interesting."

And now he knew she was lying, but then so did every politician. You did not become - well nearly become - the president if you did not have a vast interest in politics, whether you chose to use the word entertainment or not. He did not say so however, just gave her a small smile. "Call it interest, if you prefer. You were on the verge of becoming president?" he asked though he knew the answer.

Brian was terribly sober for a party. It wasn't that he minded sober when he worked. He hadn't managed a company by being drunk, but parties were supposed to be different, and John was so boring too with his sobriety.

He sat around, watching the game, because looking at all those men was really the only interesting thing, other than the many drinks sitting there untouched. Really this people were so fucking boring.

Standing up, he brushed off the grass from his jeans and went to the table, passing by Mrs. Barrish. "I'm going for a refill. Would you like anything?" God, he was so pathetic that he was willing to talk to an old woman. Then again, it was better than young women most of the times.

"Sugar, aren't you just what the doctor ordered." Margaret smiled up at the young man, shielding her eyes from the glare. That nice young man with the pretty blonde curls had kindly found a chair for her that could be dragged outside so she didn't have to try putting these old bones of hers on the grass. Then he'd run off to join the other boys playing their game. All she needed was a nice, cold drink and she was set for the afternoon.

And here came the answer to that wish.

"Margarita, cold as it comes and easy on the lime. Too much of that sugary flavor mix will rot your teeth, you know."

He knew how to read people, but an answer to a drink was often very telling and he knew that he'd like this woman. "The doctor has ordered plenty, but the Director likes to keep us sober and fit, unfortunately. Terrible if you ask me," Brian answered with a wink.

"I'll have to disappoint you, most of our stuff is premade to last the day. Well that's really because I'm too lazy to serve them fresh and no one else would ever bother, but if you don't like it, I'll see if we can't find something else." He went to the table and filled a cup with margarita and then made two fresh Malibu bay breeze, because he knew that the margarita was too watered own for anyone who was a real drinker, but it was the only way that the rest of this outfit would drink.

Brian returned and handed her one cup. "We're also not big on crystal." He put down the other cup. "I got you that in case the margarita isn't... refreshing enough."

"Terrible indeed." Now, this young man was so much more personable than the silent, vigilant crew that had picked them up from the mall. Or, indeed, many people she'd seen coming and going from that common room which seemed to be the only real lounge area in the house.

Chuckling, she took the cup graciously once he'd returned. "Doesn't matter what it's in as long as it's got the right kick." She took a sip and grimaced. Why would anyone want to drink something that watered down. No kick whatsoever. She set the margarita down and picked up the second cup. "Ah, now that's the ticket."

Taking a second sip, she looked up at him. "Have a seat and keep an old lady company. I've got a much better view of those tight buns playing ball than you've got over there, anyway. You can tell me the names to go with them."

Brian laughed. "I'd say that things will get better, but unfortunately this is as crazy and relaxed as it gets around here." He wasn't surprised by the reaction to the margarita and Brian dumped it to the side and threw out the plastic cup before going back and sitting down on the grass again.

"This is the only good thing about football," he said with a grin. "Now, it's not the name you need to worry about, but the relationships. Once you got those figured out, the names will come. Some are too easy not to pick up. There, those two are the Callen brothers. Older one is in charge of training and goes by his last name. His brother is a Colonel in the Air Force, name is Robert. That fine Black ass, that's Sam Hanna. He's with Callen. Kids are Jenna over there next to her husband Dom. He's the one from your dimension. It's how we knew who you were. Referee over there, that's Sam's son, Sean. Pretty boy over there with the blue eyes and a damn nice body. That's Troy, Sean's fiance. Keeping track yet or can I continue?"

"So, it really is true that all the good looking ones are taken or gay," Margaret said with smirk. Her eyes strayed back to the two Callen brothers. "I always have appreciated a nice set of bookends. Not that I read much, mind. I just appreciate nice things."

Taking another sip of her drink, she smiled and settled back a little more in her chair. "Those last two make quite the handsome couple. Now that one, there, I know. If I'm not mistaken, he's the serious one with the gorgeous green eyes who shares a room with my new favorite bartender." She smiled. "Like I said all the good looking ones. Go on, tell me the others. You'll find I rarely forget a name that goes with a pretty face."

Doug and Claudia

Football. They wanted to play football. Doug had never played football, he would have been happy never to play football, but they had to be sociable and likeable. After all, their father was bound to say something stupid and Nana would insult people sooner rather than later. So it was up to them to be the nice kids.

God, it was like being back in the White House, minus all the advantages that went with that.

He was so glad when they finally called it off. He didn't even know what the score was; that's how much interest he had in the game. Instead he went straight for the table with the drink and filled a cup (red plastic, what the hell?) with the margarita and took a sip. "Jesus, did they forget the tequila?" He looked at the redhead standing there as well. "Do you know where I can find more tequila and make a real drink?" And if not, he'd have to try something else, because after that game, he needed a drink.

Claudia shrugged. "No clue. Elijah Craig's bourbon in coke is my poison of choice, but they don't have that in this dimension." Nor was it sold in her dimension either; it was a Warehouse distilled drink, in the brewers aisle. There was a lot of apparatus for making drinks on hand that wouldn't kill you. She knew to avoid the Laphroaig Distillery barrel since it was one of the few that would drown you like it did it's owner, Donald Jackson.

"Claudia Donovan, at your less than helpful service." She stuck out her hand.

"Elijah Craig 18 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon. Nice, but it shouldn't be ruined with something like coke. Straight up, nice glass by the fire." Celebrating his mother's win as President of the United States. That sounded so much better than this.

"Douglas Hammond," he said, as he put down the cup and shook her hand. "All right, let's see what we've got here. How about a screwdriver? Would you like one?" he asked. "So Ms. Claudia Donovan, when did you get here and what did you do before getting here? Those seem to be the standard questions." It also gave him a feeling of the people here, at least the ones who talked, as opposed to the bunch that picked them up at the mall, and not the DC one.

"Considering I'm not supposed to be drinking when hanging out at the Ware... I work, I'll have to stick with it being in coke." Not that Claudia drank a lot, but sometimes she had the ol' sneaky sneak, usually with Pete and then they played with things they weren't supposed to, harmless or not.

"Sure, I'll give it a shot," Claudia said about the drink. "I'm on week two as of yesterday. My body feels like it's on week one billion. The feeling has yet to return to my calves." The extra day off, so loved. "Secret Service. You?"

"At the Ware-?" He smiled, wondering where she worked. Not that it mattered to him. When you grew up in the White House, secrets were the norm, even when they were open secrets.

"It's just vodka and orange juice," he said as he mixed it in two cups, his was heavy on the vodka and not so much on the juice. "Newcomer as well. My condolences." He handed her the cup. "Me? White House. Dad was the president, Mom the Secretary of State. I was her chief of staff until she resigned to run for president. She's the Democratic nominee and next president, you know if we were still at home, and that means that you worked for us, at least if you are from our dimension. You seem too young for Secret Service and you talk too much and make jokes. You can't be from our dimension."

"I'd probably have recognized you or your name if I was from your place. Where I'm from, Secret Service hires all kinds to do all kinds of things, outside of guarding all things presidential." Claudia accepted the drink and tried not to choke when she took a sip. "Strong stuff. So, a President's kid. Is it as cloistering and Big Brother as it seems?"

When first getting the email, Eric had thought about whether he wanted to join the game or not. Back home he probably would have, not because he liked it but because he'd been asked. Here he didn't feel the same inclination and so had opted on staying out of it. He sat on the grass with his laptop in his lap, every now and again looking up. When he wasn't getting up to get something to eat or drink, that was.

He was just getting another cup of beer when he spotted Claudia coming over. "Hey," he said. "Having fun?"

"If I liked football, food, and togetherness, I'd be having fun. Luckily, I do. Mostly the food and togetherness that doesn't involve physical torture that passes for exercise around here." Claudia held a plate with a mound of chips with a glob of dip. She tipped her head to the ongoing game. "No football playing for you?"

Eric shook his head. "Nah, not really my kind of fun," he said. "I mean I could if I wanted to, but it's more fun when powers are involved." Not that he'd joined here anytime voluntary, while at home he would have at least considered it.

"I notice you're not playing either?"

"Not too much into the team sports. Geek, party of one." Claudia pointed to herself. "Sometimes Pete would give me puppy eyes until I gave in and played with him, but that really was like playing with a puppy. Throw the ball, he fetches, and brings it back." Of course, they usually used the 1935 Notre Dame/Ohio State game football, the "Hail Mary", which was always caught no matter how badly thrown.

"Want to pop a squat?" Claudia asked, indicating the grass.

"I'm more of a surfer myself," Eric replied with a slight laugh. "When I'm not in front of the screen that is. Of course here surfing isn't really on the agenda so I'm pretty much stuck with the screen." He really did miss surfing. It was something he'd taken for granted for most of his life, and now it wasn't an option nor was it likely to be for a long time.

"This Pete, was he your boyfriend? Or just a friend?" he asked.

It took the gesture for Eric to realize what she was suggesting and he smiled and nodded. "Sure," he said taking a sip from his cup. "I've never heard that expression before," he said as they took a seat in the grass. "Is it common where you come from or some local variety?"

"Riding the waves. Awesome. Cowabunga, dude." Claudia made the surfer sign. "Surfers are usually skaters or snowboarders, too, in the winter months, or so I've heard. We're on a mountain. Maybe you'll get lucky."

Claudia snorted. "Uh, no. Pete's a friend and co-worker. Kind of like a brother from another mother. Which he'd have to be, since mine's dead."

Legs folded, plate in her lap, she dipped a chip and munched on it. "I've been told my speaking is not that of normal Earthlings. I pick up strange things, retain, and reuse. Some people recycle trash, I recycle verbage. And trash, because hello planet, only one we currently got."
