Summary: It's another Sunday, another birthday and another family dinner

Dinner was a much quieter affair than usual, not that Savannah and Marty weren't doing their best to keep conversation going with Dom's help, but they needed to be quiet for Liam, and with Mike's blindness, they didn't want to assault his other senses. Also there was something going on with Sam and G, but Savannah didn't have to ask what the problem was there.

Liam woke up once during it, but Savannah let Robert enjoy dinner and prepared the formula for him and changed his diaper. All in all they made it through dinner without any problems, and then they were hanging around for cake and coffee (for those who could drink it) and then leave Robert for some peace and quiet.

"I'm sure she would." Sean laughed. "Truth or Dare is good enough. Not much is really happening."

Pausing, Sean worked it out in his head. "Step-cousin? Who knows. But, yeah, everything's alright." He was still getting up and following Robert. But, that was more because he wanted to see the baby. "It's not overly important. That basketball player with the pretty smile has just left me stuck in a quandary of the non Truth of Dare, non-kissing type. When I said the second one was a result of not being able to back down? Yep. Totally accurate. He brought up something in front of the Direct I would have preferred to keep quiet and to cover, he said we were dating. In front of Savannah. I really kind of owe him one for that."

Robert made a detour to the bathroom and washed his hands, before telling Sean to do the same, and then they went to the bedroom. At same point, he'd really have to stop people from coming in, because it was more than obvious that there were two people sleeping here, although at this point, he was sure that only Jenna and Dom weren't aware of what was going on.

"I think you can stick with cousin, although people might just start to wonder just how we're all related. Do you think anyone would ever ask your dad?" he said as he went to the incubator to check on Liam, who was sucking on his fist as he stretched. "He hates that pacifier," he said, chuckling.

He opened the incubator and picked him. "Here, you can hold him while I get food ready for him." He passed Liam over, and began preparing the formula. "So Savannah thinks you're dating and you aren't. Tell her that Troy is an idiot, and you want to keep it a secret. Despite everything she knows how to do that. Or even better, tell her the truth. She will have your back even with Sam and G if that's what you're wondering. Unless the quandary is that you want to date the basketball player with the pretty smile, in which case you need a new life, a car, places to go that aren't Arizona, and I can't help with that." He poured the formula in the pump and turned to stare at Sean. "Or is the something that you want to keep quiet the problem?"

"Oh that's easy. We're all related through Savannah. G's her dad, but my dad's family, too. Everyone else connects from there." Laughing, Sean shook his head. "I don't think people dare ask Dad much."

Taking Liam carefully. Sean rocked unconsciously in time to the music in his own head while Robert listed the possibilities. "Nah, no interest in dating Troy." He sighed. "I don't know how much you picked up when we were all living together, but Dad and I haven't had the best relationship over the years. Things are better since coming here, but I get jealous. I can admit it. He's my dad and I've always wanted more attention from him and now that I can get it, it bugs me when I have to give it up to someone else. That was how I found my power, actually. I was pissed off at Savannah for playing daddy's little girl and trying to tell me how to treat him.

"And it drives me insane to watch Nick fawn all over him. But, I promised Dad I'd give the kid a break. So, I try. But, the other night, watching Dad finally put him in his place? God, that was awesome. Troy baked a cake for me after to celebrate because he knows I can't stand the kid, though I've never told him about things with Dad growing up.

"Of course, then he told Director Vance about the cake and the Director wanted to know what I was celebrating. Troy tells him our one month anniversary. And I don't really want him to know the real reason because he's Dad's boss and, really, it's petty. I get it. But, I wasn't about to back down, either. So, I went with it. Only, he doesn't like to back down either and now Savannah's asking about dinners and if I let it go, it gets back to Dad and Jen and if I were really dating someone, they'd know first.

"On the other hand, I'm tempted to tell them and see if they'll play along and really introduce Troy to the family and wait until he runs. But, Dad's in such a pissy mood right now, I don't see it going over well."

"Ah yes, it's the circle of Savannah, a variation on the circle of life," he said, chuckling. "And that's because SEALs are crazy sons of bitches and if you mess with them, then you deserve whatever you get."

Robert listened to everything, while watching Liam. He wasn't fussing yet, so they had some time before he'd have to be hooked up to the pump. He let Sean hold him, while he answered. "I'm pretty sure that we all know how you feel about your dad. I was the one home when he left on missions with Savannah, through people dying. I might not have considered you family like Savannah does, but I was keeping my eyes open. You're also not very restrained with your emotions," he said, laughing.

"Having said that, you have no problems on the Nick front. I'm pretty sure that anyone in there and here would be more than happy to to shoot him, at least after some painful one on one time with him." He sighed. "Look, Sean, I know that I can tell how you're supposed to feel, but it's not going to change what you actually feel, but I've seen your dad look at you and Jenna. He adores you, and no one is going to come between you two, especially not Nick.

"Now, onto to Troy. You're not interested, but you're comfortable enough with each other to kiss in front of everyone," he said. "What happens if Troy doesn't run? What if you're misreading the situation and he might be interested? What if he meets your dad and says sure, let's have the dinner with your family. How far are you going to let this go? Far enough that feelings get hurt? This isn't a guy you'll never see. If we were home, I'd say do it, fuck him if that's what you want, and then tell him to fuck off when you're done, but this is someone you're close to. Now, pissy mood or not, I think your dad would do anything you ask him, especially if it's about pulling someone's leg. I mean seriously have you heard him and G go at it? They'd back you up in a heartbeat, but think about you and Troy before you ask him, because you might end up losing a friend in the process and in this place, you can't really waste them."

"Well, she does like Disney." Sean grinned. He and Savannah had been along pretty well since that last blowout. But, she was still something else.

"It's funny," he mused. "I've always worn my heart on my sleeve. I don't see point in hiding my emotions when I'm just going to put them into my music anyway. But, Dad never seems to get it, especially the music part. Last night was supposed to be for him, you know. I mean, all of you, really. You, G, Jen, Dad. But, things had to happen to piss him off and it's like when I was eight and learned to play Anchor's Aweigh just for him all over again." Sean shrugged one shoulder, trying to be careful not to jostle Liam. "I get that the things he does are important. But, it seems like there's always something. He was stationed overseas when I graduated high school and I never got a Juilliard graduation for him to see. Nate died and my birthday was forgotten. Now Savannah and I planned last night and Nick has to go and pull a stupid stunt so my dad can't even enjoy it. It's just...always something."

Making a face, he sighed. "Go ahead and appeal to my basically nice guy nature. I see how it is. No, I don't really want to hurt Troy. Not that he really thought of the position he was putting me in when he opened his mouth in front of the Director. I mean, he told my dad's boss we've been fucking for a month. In front of Savannah who reacted like, well, Savannah. And made it clear Dad and Jen didn't know, that the Director was less scary to tell than Dad. Then left me to deal with Savannah asking if he should be invited to family dinners. He started it. In a way, it'd serve him right to have to sit through a dinner he instigated." Sean sighed again. "But, I guess, even if I'm telling him I'm just playing along with the joke he started, it probably wouldn't end well if Dad and G got involved."

"She does. She's been talking about that nursery and I feel sorry for Deeks," he said, with a snort. "But she's a good kid. She's got a good heart. She should be home resting and not spending the afternoons helping me and cooking for four now."

Robert picked up Liam and hooked the tube to the pump. "Sit for a moment," he said, as he took a seat himself so he could watch the incubator, even though there was no reason to. "I've worked with men like your father, back in Italy. They come in, do their missions, names are classified, teams are classified. They have nothing personal with them, no pictures, nothing that could lead people back to their families, but when they come back from that mission, and they can relax, the first thought... well, that's usually beer, but the second is for their families. Your dad might have been pissed, might not have enjoyed it, but he gets it. He just sucks at telling you, because he's spent his entire life internalizing everything. I know it doesn't make it easier, but you shouldn't wonder whether he gets it or not."

He chuckled. "I'm not. I'm appealing to your selfish nature. Do you really want to lose a friend? How far are you willing to let it go? How far do want it to go? If you think you can control your dad and limit it to a dinner, then sure, but you need to be ready to pull the plug if this prank goes on for too long. If you can do that- well Sunday dinners scare a few people." The discussion with Mike was too fresh not to know. "So not Troy? Are you interested in someone else? That pretty redhead that lives with you? It's not healthy for a man your age not to be getting laid on a regular basis. I hope you know that."

One of the first things she told me when I got here was how Dad and G had to make it a rule that she wasn't allowed to cook during the week so she could focus on training." Sean chuckled as Robert took the baby from him. "Of course, that was right before she started explaining my Dad to me the first time."

Taking a seat as instructed, Sean listened and he knew Robert was right. It was just hard to see it. "Yeah, Dad said he kept his distance from us to protect us and I know he thinks it was what was best, it was done out of love. But, it still doesn't really fill that Dad-shaped gap in the life of the sixteen year old living without his father and having very little idea who the man is or if he cares or could ever be proud of his son. It's better now between us. It is. And at twenty-two, I should get over it, probably. But, I'm still that sixteen year old kid looking for approval, I guess."

Sean snorted. "I don't think even G could control my dad if Dad didn't let him. I don't know. We'll see, I guess. I'll have to think of something to tell Savannah soon, anyway, otherwise he'll end up invited to family dinner whether I plan it or not. But, that'll totally be on him for telling her we're dating. Either way, I'm going to have to tell Dad and Jen it's not true. Mostly because there's no way I'd ever tell Director Vance or Savannah before I told them."

Laughing, he shook his head. "No, that was why Alexis and I decided we'd work as roommates. Neither of us is interested in the other that way. Very low drama." He shrugged. "I'm not really looking. Not really not looking. But, I've tried casual. Problem is I don't really do things by halves. I fall and fall hard and I keep falling because it's this amazing rush and even when it ends, that rush was still far more intense than the crash at the end. So, I get up, put it to music, and do it all over again. But, wanting to immerse myself in the person I'm with doesn't really lend itself well to casual. So, I wait for something a little less casual. And, when it happens, it'll happen. And if it doesn't happen, I'm really good with just having my family, friends, and music. It's pretty idyllic, really, no matter what the situation surrounding us is like."

Robert laughed. "I'm sure she was trying to help without really knowing what she was doing. As I said, she's got a good heart. I never said her ways are always the right ones."

He sighed. "I know. I always thought my father was dead and my mother never wanted to talk about him. It doesn't matter what the truth is, it's what we feel, and your dad was alive, but it's hard when most of his life is classified. Hard for you." Robert put an arm around Sean and squeezed. "I don't think we ever get over what our parents did. Look at G. Parents are the ones that can fuck us up forever whether they mean it or not. Scares the shit out of me, to be honest with you, because now-" He let go and pointed to the incubator. "There are so many ways that I can fuck him up, and you get front row seats."

Robert chuckled. "All right, but you don't have much time. You've got less than a week, because you know it's coming."

He nodded. "That's smart, the living arrangements. The rest is such crap," he said, laughing. "I get... well no, I'm big on not falling for anyone. In fact, I don't even want to think about Savannah's honeymoon. Between me and Mike, I don't know want to know how many pregnant women there are around," he said with a snort, and then sighed. "I guess you're right. With the way things are here, causal isn't something that you can do anyway. I'm a firm believer that everyone will end up paired up because the alternative is going nuts and alone forever. All right, then ignore me. Go talk to your dad. Just make sure that you don't get too involved with Troy without meaning to, unless you want to in which case, go forth and fuck."

"Yeah, I know she does. But, I'd only literally just met her then." Sean shook his head. Savannah was easier to get over things with than his dad. Probably because, while she was family, she didn't mean as much to him as his dad. So, it was easier to look past some things.

Returning Robert's one-armed hug, he smiled. "I promise I won't let you repeat my dad's mistakes if it can be helped. You might be on your own for any you make up yourself though." Sean nodded. "I'm not alone, though. Hard to be alone with this insane family of ours. And I'm not involved with Troy at all yet. He just told everyone we are. But, I'll leave you in peace now and figure out what to say to Dad about all this. Thanks, partner."

"You're welcome." Robert got up when Sean did, because he still had a son to take care of, but his eyes stayed on Sean for a bit longer. One simple sentence about the prank had been misinterpreted in a very telling way and the 'yet' was even more telling.

Robert leaned down and ran his finger over Liam's stomach. "Sean won't know what hit him, Little One. I bet will have a new guest sooner rather than later."
