RP: Peter and Neal
Who: Peter Burke and Neal Caffrey
Where: New York
When: 8 November 2010
Summary: Neal is definitely up to something

Things had been tenuous at best since everything had come to a head with Fowler and then things had gone so wrong with Mozzie, it had left things even more tense than usual. It had taken some finagling to keep Caffrey out of jail for a second time - if he'd gone back this time Peter was pretty sure he wouldn't have been able to get him out again, tracker or not. So he'd gotten creative, and with the help of Jones and Diana, they managed it.

Of course that just meant Peter got to dole out punishment as he saw fit since Neal escaped any other sort of retribution for that little stunt. Peter had shortened his leash, giving Peter a one mile radius, and kept Neal on paperwork duty for the most part, only bringing him in on cases when there was no other choice.

Today was one of those days when there was no other choice, they needed Neal's connections and Peter wanted to end this case sooner than later - so it meant bringing Neal on board.

"Look this is important, don't go screwing around, and don't make any stupid mistakes." He was going over last minute details with Neal as they headed out, the elevator taking them down, things had been getting good before - they were working on becoming partners, real partners and not just an FBI agent and his consultant, and then Fowler had shown up again and it was like starting over again - though with a lot more added baggage. Elizabeth had heard him vent about it often enough, and she'd made suggestions too as she always did, but things were still tense. And Peter was having a hard time finding that line between special agent and friend.

The carriage finally stopped and the doors slid open, and Peter continued his briefing on the case, reminding Neal again of things he knew well enough all ready, it was only when they were outside that Peter started catching on to the fact that something was wrong here, something was different but he couldn't put a finger on it. "Caffrey, whatever you're doing, whatever you're planning, stop it now." Peter warned him, that had to be it - he really was too intuned to Caffrey these days, he spent too much time with the man.

Neal was excited to be out of the office, not that he was letting it show much. He'd been on paperwork duty for what seemed like forever and while he didn't mind it when the cases were interesting, Peter seemed to be deliberately giving him boring cases to write up.

Really, didn't the man know he had a low boredom threshold?

He raised his eyebrows at the accusation, giving Peter his best innocent look. "Really, Peter, you need to stop thinking the worst of me, I'm not doing anything."

Neal paused for a moment. "Besides, if I was planning anything I'd be far more discrete."

"Of course you're not." Peter rolled his eyes at the look Neal gave him. He really was good at that sort of thing, and it was probably what had helped him for so long, thankfully Peter was still unaffected by it.

Peter glanced around them, things were different - small things, the front of shops were different, makes of cars that rolled down the street in front of them were unfamiliar. He frowned looking up and down the street and then stopped when something over the line of buildings caught his eye.

"Please tell me you drugged me." Peter couldn't take his eyes off the pair of twin buildings that loomed over them. "This is part of a not so subtle plot on your part, right? Some new trick." Because Peter was not that agent who started seeing things, like buildings he knew to have been destroyed.

Neal clocked the differences immediately. He hadn't become an art thief by not noticing things and his frown mirrored Peter as he tried to figure out what was going on.

This... Didn't make any sense. And while Neal was good with things not making sense at times, it wasn't usually something as huge as the entire scenery changing.

"No, no drugs," Neal looked up at the two towers, surprise showing on his face. "If I could manage something like this, do you really think I'd be being monitored right now? Did we... Go back in time or something?"

And is Kate here? he asked himself although he wasn't stupid enough to voice it. Peter had had more than enough of him talking about Kate, especially after his stunt with Fowler.

Well, Neal had a point with that one, though Peter wasn't sure what else could accomplish something like this - especially when no one around them seemed to be alarmed to see two entire buildings which should absolutely not be there.

"Back in time? That's where your mind goes first?" Peter asked Neal disbelievingly. "How about we stick to the realm of the possible for the time being, we'll consider impossibilities later." This was not good.

He pulled out his phone intent to call Diana and see if she had any information - if this was some kind of joke, Peter might just have to murder every single one of his probies. Only problem was his phone didn't seem to work, turning it off and then on again didn't render any new results. He was turning back to the building to go back in and see for himself what they were up to there, but stopped - it was wrong too, the name on the building had changed.

Even if they had gone back in time, and why the hell was he even considering Neal's stupid suggestion, this should have remained the same. They needed to get off the street, to get some answers - but the place Peter would have gone for answers didn't look quite right. "Can you get a hold of Mozzie?"

"Hey, it's not that out there. You can't expect me to believe they're filming something and that's a backdrop," He shook his head. "Something this controversial would have had to have been in the papers."

He watched Peter make a call and look at his phone, then turning to look at the building. "Look at that, it's not our building any more."

At the question, Neal nodded. "If he's not being paranoid, sure," He reached in his pocket for his cell, flicking through to Mozzie's number and pressing 'call'. Nothing happened. No cell network. He frowned and turned his phone off and on again.

"No, I can't. I've never had a problem with this cell before either," He turned and looked at Peter. "You're not the only finding this weird, right? Only this is weird. Weirder than usual."

"And people go back in time often enough for that suggestion not to be out there?" Peter did hate that Neal was right about the papers at the very least. "There is going to be a perfectly normal explanation for this that does not include time travel, and right now we're going to figure out what that is."

Of course it would help if they had a starting point, and without the agency Peter was a bit out of his element here. "When is he not being paranoid?" The man might be a genius, but he was certifiably paranoid.

"This is very weird." Peter agreed. "Look let's go to my place, and we'll figure out our next move from there." He said finally - whatever was going on Peter would get to the bottom of it, just like he did with everything else, it just might take a little time. And though he wouldn't admit it out loud he wanted to check on El, all of this strangeness put him in an off mood and he wouldn't feel right until he knew she was all right.

"You hang around Mozzie long enough, you hear about every 'out there' theory there is," Neal reasoned, looking around him again. Something definitely felt off and he was pretty sure neither of them were imagining the fact that passer-bys seemed to think this was all normal.

"You might have a point," he said with a small smile. Mozzie wasn't considered normal by society's standards but Neal knew that without him, the FBI probably wouldn't have cracked as many cases. Mozzie's eyes and ears were everywhere and there was no rumour he wouldn't take note of. "Although I think he would have mentioned something if he'd known this was going to happen."

Neal nodded, not asking if it was because Peter wanted to check on Elizabeth. He already knew the answer was yes. "Let's go," he agreed easily, looking around him once again. "The sooner we can figure this out, the better."

Peter just shook his head, Mozzie's assistance on some of the cases they had worked on in the past had been invaluable, that much he would admit - but he was nuts, and there was just no way around that.

"He ever tell you about aliens?" Peter asked with a smirk, while they started off. "Maybe Area 51? Or how the moon landing was fake?" Peter was distracting himself, he knew it - and he'd wager Caffrey knew it too, but he wasn't going to get rid of this itch to move until he knew El was okay, the rest could be taken care of later.

Then there were police and peter had always been the sort to go along with police until they messed with his investigations so he let them lead them back toward a building, and hopefully this would be where they got some answers. Of course that was when he felt the prick in the side of his neck, and only just saw Neal collapse beside him before he did the same, losing himself to darkness.

Leon's headache seemed to be a lot worse this time. Maybe it was so close to the rift, or maybe because there was more than one. However, this was going to be a bitch. The only good thing was that Manhattan was on a full grid from 34th down, meaning that every street and every corner had cameras.

However, they were on high alert since the rift was close to FBI Headquarters, or the Omega version of the FBI. Federal Plaza was on high alert normally and this didn't help. Every camera and every man on the ground was looking for whoever came here. However nothing looked out of the ordinary. It took some time before finding the two men in suits who fit perfectly well with the lawyer and FBI agents around, except for the way they kept looking around, the way they looked at their phone.

They were going on a hunch, but Leon gave them the okay to bring them here. This required a little more finesse. You couldn't drug people in the middle of Manhattan. They used the Federal police right outside of Federal Plaza, asking the men to go back inside. Leon didn't know what the excuse was, but as they entered the side entrance where the public wasn't allowed, they were injected with the anaesthetic and taking to the base where all checks were initiated.

Leon waited until they were awake, which took considerably less this time, to go and see them. "Agent Burke, Mr. Caffrey, welcome."

Waking up in an unfamiliar place was not normal for Peter, and he was on alert the moment his eyes opened, ignoring the linger effects of whatever they had been drugged with, "That'll teach me to trust cops." He grumbled, taking stock of the room where they were being held - though he didn't get much from their surroundings, other than the fact that all his belongings had been taken from him, but Neal was there - so that was something, he was a bit like a human Swiss Army Knife after all, at least in some situations.

"You seem to have us at a bit of a disadvantage." Peter regarded the man who greeted them by name - so they hadn't just dropped their belongings off somewhere, not that Peter though that was likely for a second. "You know us, but I don't think we've met before." No sense in losing his head just yet, though that was certainly on the agenda further down the line if they didn't start getting some answers.

"Federal police," he answered, chuckling. "I don't think they like being referred as cops."

Leon sat down and opened his shirt. "I'm Leon Vance, Director of NCIS. You're currently at the Army Base in Fort Hamilton." Except that the base in this reality didn't belong to the Army and there was no NICS here, but they will get to that.

"I apologize for the way you were brought here, but we needed you off of the street as soon as possible," he started, before going into an explanation of the rift and the different realities. He explained about ICIS and how they were starting to organize things.

"We do have other people from the FBI. We will also trying to get files on your counterparts here to show you. Mr. Caffrey's is proving to be harder and slightly more colorful than yours." He smiled. "While we do, you can settle into your quarters and get to know this dimension."

Neal had woken up a minute or two before Peter and, once he felt less groggy, had immediately scanned the room to check out possible exits, weapons and threats. He didn't have anything on him to work with, they'd both been stripped of their possessions, but then that had never really stopped him before. He was creative enough to get out of most places should he need to.

Neal listened attentively at what he was told and gave Peter a slightly triumphant look. They might not have gone back in time but they weren't technically in their own world which meant that he was closer on the guessing front.

"Colorful just means more fun than you," he said to Peter with a small grin before turning back to Vance. "So, if you're telling the truth, can we get back to our own reality or are we stuck here?"

Leon raised an eyebrow. "No, the definition of fun does not include many of the activities that your counterpart seems involved in. How exactly did you end up working for the FBI? Especially with-" He reached into his pocket and brought out the ankle bracelet. "This."

He put it on the table and looked at Burke. "That's useless here. You also won't be able to return. Scientists have been working on it, but there's no guarantee that it will ever happen. You are, as you were, employed by the government of the United States. We have rooms for you. You will receive a salary. You will learn about this new reality, the new agencies, weapons. You will discover what your powers are and how to use them."

Leon smiled at Caffrey. "You will not escape, because people that try are never to be seen again, and I get the impression that civil liberties of people from other reality are not on the top of the list of this administration. You will have my protection as long as you're working for me, but I have no control out there. There are no Miranda rights here and their anti-terrorist laws make the Patriot Act look like child's play."

"The short version was that I could recognise a security fibre for the new Canadian $100 bill and his team of Harvard graduates couldn't," Neal replied. "I'm a consultant, I help out when his cases touch my areas of expertise."

"My tracker doesn't work?" Neal deliberately didn't look at the man next to him, knowing Peter probably wouldn't approve of that development at all. "So I'm here of my own free will technically? And if I don't comply then I... Disappear?"

He asked the question that had been nagging at him and his eyes flickered to Peter's briefly. "If there's another version of ourselves - now in our world obviously - then versions of our friends and family... They're here too, right?"

Despite the look that Neal gave him, and despite the very rational tone of Vance as he gave them all the details of what had happened and this new reality Peter still didn't quiet buy it - but it wouldn't really do a whole lot of good to go around in circles trying to prove who was right and who was wrong - and there was the question of the towers.

"That is the cliff notes version." Peter said shaking his head when Neal explained how they had come to be working together.

Peter pinched the bridge of his nose when Neal latched on to the idea that his tracker didn't work. "Do you have something similar? Caffrey usually needs a reminder of what's best for him and a tracker can occasionally go a long way to help toward that." He shook his head when Neal continued asking about friends and family. "Neal, do not do this." He warned him.

"What do you mean there are no guarantees we can go back? I have a wife, a dog, I can't just stay here and join whatever this is." That was Peter's real concern, fake realities or not, he needed to get back to El. He didn't care about powers, or whatever had brought them here, just getting back to El.

"Not anymore. You will have a lot of studying to do do that you can learn about the masterpieces of this time. I'm sure a few trips to the museums can be arranged." He didn't even want to think who Hetty would sent in the name of forging a new team. "You will also become a federal employee." It would be easier to protect him if something goes wrong.

"What is happening is a secret to the majority of this world. We have no idea what would happen if it came out. Cover stories are being created to explain your disappearance." He leaned against the table, fingers crossed together.

"Your very existence is a threat to national security. Disclosing anything that doesn't go with the covers story makes you an enemy combatant. White Collar unit might not deal with those so I will explain. Being an enemy combatant means that you have no rights, and the few you have tend to be forgotten. You will learn all there is to know about your omega version, but you will not make contact unless authorized. If you disobey, your future is out of my hands. Is that clear?" he asked, before turning to Peter. "We will try and find something, however, it will be hard to explain why he shouldn't be thrown in Guantanamo the first time he violates whatever restrictions we put on."

Leon tried not to think about that part, but sooner or later someone would ask, and it seemed that day. "I have a wife and two children, agent Burke. I know full well how this feels, but there is no way at the moment to return back to our reality. We are stranded here for the time being."

Neal gave Peter a look when he started talking about what was best for him. It had been made abundantly clear throughout the last year that obsessing about Kate hadn't been good for him, threatening to kill Fowler less so, but he hadn't paid any attention to either. And really, the tracker wasn't going to stop him if he actually wanted to run.

"I get to go to museums?" Neal's eyes gleamed slightly but otherwise his face remained disinterested. "Accompanied or not? Seeing as I'll be a federal employee and not just out on work release," he added with a smile.

"Peter, I'm hurt. It's like you don't trust me at all. Guantanamo is threat enough as it is," Neal pushed his fingers through his hair and looked back at Vance, not sure if there was anything else to go through. "So do we get to be shown around?"

Peter remained unaffected by the look Neal cast his way, when Neal stopped acting like a child then Peter would stop treating him like one - and Peter could tell Neal had some very stupid ideas running through his head right now, and none of them would turn out well.

"Accompanied." Peter answered for Vance, they might both be federal employees, but he was the one who knew Neal, and he was responsible for him, in any reality. This was going to be a nightmare. "I know you, Caffrey, there is a difference." And a life in prison hadn't been enough to keep Neal in line, why exactly would the threat of Guantanamo?

Peter wanted to punch something, what was he supposed to do here? What was El supposed to do at home? Just come to terms with the idea that her husband had simply disappeared? "Do you know what is happening with our counterparts?" Surely they wouldn't be sent home to live the lives of the people's places they were taking.

"I wouldn't say accompanied, but joined. You are not the only person that needs to catch up and Hetty, who's my deputy, enjoys them very much." There was no need to add that Hetty would do whatever was best for the team.

"As far as I know, our government is isolating them. My guess is that there will be cover stories for them as well, but I know as much as you do. Trust me, agent Burke; I want to go home as much as everyone else, but until we know how, we need to deal with our current reality."

He stood up. "Come on, let's get you to your rooms, and you can start studying. We'll have plenty of time to talk."
