RP: Peter and Neal
Who: Peter Burke and Neal Caffrey
Where: New York
When: 8 November 2010
Summary: Neal is definitely up to something

Things had been tenuous at best since everything had come to a head with Fowler and then things had gone so wrong with Mozzie, it had left things even more tense than usual. It had taken some finagling to keep Caffrey out of jail for a second time - if he'd gone back this time Peter was pretty sure he wouldn't have been able to get him out again, tracker or not. So he'd gotten creative, and with the help of Jones and Diana, they managed it.

Of course that just meant Peter got to dole out punishment as he saw fit since Neal escaped any other sort of retribution for that little stunt. Peter had shortened his leash, giving Peter a one mile radius, and kept Neal on paperwork duty for the most part, only bringing him in on cases when there was no other choice.

Today was one of those days when there was no other choice, they needed Neal's connections and Peter wanted to end this case sooner than later - so it meant bringing Neal on board.

"Look this is important, don't go screwing around, and don't make any stupid mistakes." He was going over last minute details with Neal as they headed out, the elevator taking them down, things had been getting good before - they were working on becoming partners, real partners and not just an FBI agent and his consultant, and then Fowler had shown up again and it was like starting over again - though with a lot more added baggage. Elizabeth had heard him vent about it often enough, and she'd made suggestions too as she always did, but things were still tense. And Peter was having a hard time finding that line between special agent and friend.

The carriage finally stopped and the doors slid open, and Peter continued his briefing on the case, reminding Neal again of things he knew well enough all ready, it was only when they were outside that Peter started catching on to the fact that something was wrong here, something was different but he couldn't put a finger on it. "Caffrey, whatever you're doing, whatever you're planning, stop it now." Peter warned him, that had to be it - he really was too intuned to Caffrey these days, he spent too much time with the man.

Well, Neal had a point with that one, though Peter wasn't sure what else could accomplish something like this - especially when no one around them seemed to be alarmed to see two entire buildings which should absolutely not be there.

"Back in time? That's where your mind goes first?" Peter asked Neal disbelievingly. "How about we stick to the realm of the possible for the time being, we'll consider impossibilities later." This was not good.

He pulled out his phone intent to call Diana and see if she had any information - if this was some kind of joke, Peter might just have to murder every single one of his probies. Only problem was his phone didn't seem to work, turning it off and then on again didn't render any new results. He was turning back to the building to go back in and see for himself what they were up to there, but stopped - it was wrong too, the name on the building had changed.

Even if they had gone back in time, and why the hell was he even considering Neal's stupid suggestion, this should have remained the same. They needed to get off the street, to get some answers - but the place Peter would have gone for answers didn't look quite right. "Can you get a hold of Mozzie?"

"Hey, it's not that out there. You can't expect me to believe they're filming something and that's a backdrop," He shook his head. "Something this controversial would have had to have been in the papers."

He watched Peter make a call and look at his phone, then turning to look at the building. "Look at that, it's not our building any more."

At the question, Neal nodded. "If he's not being paranoid, sure," He reached in his pocket for his cell, flicking through to Mozzie's number and pressing 'call'. Nothing happened. No cell network. He frowned and turned his phone off and on again.

"No, I can't. I've never had a problem with this cell before either," He turned and looked at Peter. "You're not the only finding this weird, right? Only this is weird. Weirder than usual."

"And people go back in time often enough for that suggestion not to be out there?" Peter did hate that Neal was right about the papers at the very least. "There is going to be a perfectly normal explanation for this that does not include time travel, and right now we're going to figure out what that is."

Of course it would help if they had a starting point, and without the agency Peter was a bit out of his element here. "When is he not being paranoid?" The man might be a genius, but he was certifiably paranoid.

"This is very weird." Peter agreed. "Look let's go to my place, and we'll figure out our next move from there." He said finally - whatever was going on Peter would get to the bottom of it, just like he did with everything else, it just might take a little time. And though he wouldn't admit it out loud he wanted to check on El, all of this strangeness put him in an off mood and he wouldn't feel right until he knew she was all right.

"You hang around Mozzie long enough, you hear about every 'out there' theory there is," Neal reasoned, looking around him again. Something definitely felt off and he was pretty sure neither of them were imagining the fact that passer-bys seemed to think this was all normal.

"You might have a point," he said with a small smile. Mozzie wasn't considered normal by society's standards but Neal knew that without him, the FBI probably wouldn't have cracked as many cases. Mozzie's eyes and ears were everywhere and there was no rumour he wouldn't take note of. "Although I think he would have mentioned something if he'd known this was going to happen."

Neal nodded, not asking if it was because Peter wanted to check on Elizabeth. He already knew the answer was yes. "Let's go," he agreed easily, looking around him once again. "The sooner we can figure this out, the better."

Peter just shook his head, Mozzie's assistance on some of the cases they had worked on in the past had been invaluable, that much he would admit - but he was nuts, and there was just no way around that.

"He ever tell you about aliens?" Peter asked with a smirk, while they started off. "Maybe Area 51? Or how the moon landing was fake?" Peter was distracting himself, he knew it - and he'd wager Caffrey knew it too, but he wasn't going to get rid of this itch to move until he knew El was okay, the rest could be taken care of later.

Then there were police and peter had always been the sort to go along with police until they messed with his investigations so he let them lead them back toward a building, and hopefully this would be where they got some answers. Of course that was when he felt the prick in the side of his neck, and only just saw Neal collapse beside him before he did the same, losing himself to darkness.
