RP: April and Savannah
Who: April and Savannah
Where: Savannah's room
When: January 7
Summary: April goes to talk to Savannah

She was getting a hosue! That was the one thought that had been present in her mind all day. Oh she knew it was not a done deal until she had the keys in her hand, and that she needed a second room mate, but she was on the road to getting a house. It was something worth being excited about, and there were so few things here that were.

After finishing off in the lab with Abby, April walked briskly to Savannah's room, wanting to tell her the news. She was surprised when from inside she heard barking, and even more surprised when Savannah opened the door and a big German Shepherd was standing a bit back behind Savannah.

"You've got a dog!" she exclaimed, a huge smile on her face as she watched the dog. It seemed a bit shy, but April was very used to animals, and loved the to boot. It was impossible not to having been raised on a farm. Stepping inside, she looked at Savannah for a moment. "When did you get it? Is it a she or a he? What do you call... her, I'm guessing?" It was an impossible angle to see for sure, but there were always signs if you knew how to look. Once inside, she squatted down and waited to see if the dog wanted to come and great her.

Savannah had just got back. It had taken much longer than expected, and not just because of the snow. However, now she was home and packing. Not that she had much to pack. She figured that she could do the move during the weekend and be ready for work on Monday.

The knock on the door surprised her. Only Marty really came by, and she doubted it would be him. "It's all right, sweetie," she said, petting Nova, before checking who it was and opening the door.

"Hey, and yes I got a dog," she said, laughing. Savannah closed the door again, locking it. "Just this morning. April meet Nova. She doesn't really trusts people much." Really that was becoming a theme in her life.

She waited while Nova took her time in greeting her, letting her take her time. "I can see that. She's gorgeous," she added, petting Nova a bit. "Where did you get her?" For the moment that seemed like a far more interesting topic of conversation than a house that might be hers in the future. She'd get to it of course, but she really loved animals. It was one of the things she missed about living in the big city.

When she stood up, she smiled as she looked around. "Did you have a dog back home?" she continued to ask, sitting down on the sofa. "I grew up around animals, I love them. I haven't had any since moving to Seattle though. A city really isn't the place for a dog, besides I'm too busy. A dog needs company and exercise."

Looking around, she noticed the details around her. "You're packing," she stated happily. "Does that mean that you and Marty are getting your house soon?" she asked happily.

Savannah kept a hand on Nova's collar. The lady at the shelter had warned them that strays could become dangerous without meaning to, little things triggering memories. So while she smiled at April, her fingers were tight around the collar, making sure that she wasn't going anywhere.

"G and Sam drove me to a shelter upstate this morning. I got her there," she said, before breathing easier as April stood up. "I did, but she was a little tiny Maltese, nothing like this. She wouldn't have liked the snow or running. Nova is going to have fun on the base, and I do run at least ten miles a day, so the exercise won't be a problem."

She nodded. "Not that there's much. My clothes a few more things. Almost everything else belongs here." Marty. Before talking to G, the question would have hurt, but the past two days had made a tremendous impact. Could she really had moved on so quickly? Or was it the fact that she hadn't seen him? Or maybe she was just going too fast as G has said. She had no idea, but now wasn't the time for confusion. "No, we decided that's best not to. He... I don't know what he wants, and I'm moving in with Sam and G."

"A shelter?" she looked at Nova once more, and she swore she would never understand how someone could abandon a dog. How horrid did you have to be to do something like that?

She smiled. "A Maltese?" she asked. "They're very cute," she said, though they weren't as much dogs as German Shepherds. "I have to admit I have a preference for bigger dogs like Nova though. I'm sure she'll love the base, and running. They like to work." she said.

She felt horrified when Savannah told her about Marty, and she wished she hadn't brought it up. She hadn't known, but she'd just assumed. "I'm so sorry," she said. "I wouldn't have mentioned- I'm really sorry. Are you okay?" she asked. "My offer from New Years stands, you know. It wasn't just something I said. If you need it, that is."

"What happened? Or don't you want to talk about it?"

"Yes, they had so many, some were beautiful, but Nova was abandoned in the streets. She needed a home, don't you, baby?" she asked the dog, while petting her.

Savannah sat on the armchair, Nova taking a spot next to her, but not lying down. She continued to pet her. "I like them all. Smaller ones are easier, but not on a base. They'd be lost here."

She shook her head. "No, it's fine. Really." It wasn't as if she'd admit anything else at this point. She'd made her resolve and she would learn to keep her distances from people.

"I'm fine, and he realized that he wasn't sure about what he wanted, and we agreed that under the circumstances it was better that we didn't move in together." That was a much nicer explanation of what had happened, even if accurate in a way. "And I'll be fine with Sam and G, besides, they want us to leave with people who can use weapons, so I can't find a better alternative." Of course none of that had led her to agree to moving in. Sam's not very subtle attempts at convincing her had left her no choice. "So did you find a room mate?"

She looked at the interaction between the two, smiling. The affection was so obvious in Savannah's every movement and her tone of voice. "She's found a good home with you," she said, sure of it.

There was something different with Savannah, something lacking. She was talking too little. Perhaps it was just that she was uncomfortable speaking about the break up, and April didn't want to push, but she was worried all the same.

"As long as you're fine," she said. "But if that changes, know that you have a friend in me. I know we've only known each other for a short while but, like you said, we normal people need to stick together."

In spite of the situation she did smile when Savannah asked about the room mate. "That was what I came here to tell you. Abby agreed to move in with me, so we're getting a house. Or we're getting one when we've found one more room mate by the sound of it from Hetty. She wanted someone who could protect us in the house. I suppose that is her way of saying someone with weapons." She shuddered. "Do you know Penelope? Does she use guns? Abby suggested her, but that was before I knew we needed someone to protect us."

"And G and Sam," she said, chuckling. "She'll have plenty of company there."

Savannah nodded. "I am. It was a nice dream, but I was rushing and so was he. Everything happened in like, two weeks." Not that she didn't think that love at first sight couldn't happen, but Marty didn't even know what he wanted with his life, and Savannah had been too sure of her goals, and now she was changing all of them.

"Starting Monday, we'll all start working. I don't know how many normal ones there will be," she pointed out.

"That's great. You seemed to like her very much." She thought of Penelope and shook her head. "She's a computer expert who doesn't uses guns, and she's going to room with Morgan, not that she told me, but really those two are like attached to each other. Peter is most likely staying with Neal. I'd say Mikey is your best bet. He's nice and fun."

"And G and Sam," she agreed. "Why are you moving in with them?" she asked, curious about Savannah's motives. She'd offer her to move in with her and Abby in a heartbeat, but if she already had another place it wasn't right.

"All right," she said though she wasn't convinced. "If you change your mind, if you feel differently, let me know," she said. "There is no time limit on the offer."

She frowned a little at the mention of work. "It feels like I'm never going to be allowed into an OR again," she admitted. "I miss it. I miss working." She needed to see G again, talk to him about her training. He'd said he'd find a way for her to do it, she could only hope he kept his word. "I do hope I can stay a surgeon, that I can keep being a normal person. I don't want to be an agent any more than you do."

She listened as Savannah spoke, nodding. "Mikey it is then," she said, trying to remember how he looked like. "I'll see if I can't find him tomorrow or something, see what happens. It's worth a try, right?"

"Because she needs room and company, and they have a house and a dog. That and they have guns," she pointed out again. "Besides, it'll be easier to train with them right there."

Savannah nodded. "Thank you, but it's really all right. I was just stupid to think that we could do what we did at home." Except even in her naive state, she had never considered that they'd let April be a doctor and nothing else. "I told you, you'll get in an OR when someone here gets shot. You can stay a surgeon, but only on top of being an agent. That email from the Director was pretty clear. Why do you think we need aliases otherwise or why we're getting a salary? And G has made it clear from the start that any classes I might take are in addition to training. I doubt he'd make different arrangements for you."

She smiled. "He lives in the hotel and the army is so nice with their lists. You won't have a problem finding him, and I think he'd prefer living with non federal agents."

She nodded, looking at Nova again. "That'll be nice for her."

She hated that she was forced into something she didn't want. All she had ever wanted to be was a doctor. She'd always known, always. It was what she burnt for, what she wanted, and to think this was temporary had been so much easier. She'd kept on hoping that she'd get enough training to make it back home when they got there. With every day that passed she got less and less hopeful about returning. She tried to keep her hope, writing in her diary that she would be able to go home, that she would be the future of medicine still. It was harder to believe, and Savannah did not make it easier. "That's the problem isn't it? I can't be an agent who jumps into the OR every few months, it doesn't work like that. It's like your training. If you stop training for months on end, you can't suddenly just go back and be at the top of your game. I'll lose it." She'd lose herself if that happened and no reading up on medical advances in this dimension as she has done and Mr Vance had suggested wouldn't help at all. Not to mention that she'd be a horrible agent. Who ever heard of an agent who was afraid of guns and followed advice from Oprah?

Talking about the house was nicer, and she nodded, pushing the feeling of desperation aside. She was used to doing that. She'd push it away and write about it in her diary. She did need to talk to G though, as soon as he had time for her. "I'll find him," she assured Savannah. She'd focus on the house, and not jump to conclusions about her training until she'd spoken to G about it.

Savannah didn't answer the comment about Nova, because there wasn't much to say. However her attention was on April. Did she really think that she'd be a doctor? Even Savannah hadn't been so deluded. She knew what they expected of her; it's why she tried to kill herself. She knew what they wanted, but she just refused to agree with them, or had refused. Now, she'd go along with whatever G wanted.

"April, that works if you want to becomes the best doctor around. That's not what they want from you," she said, because she didn't need to be a genius to know what G wanted. "You're like... our own personal battle field doctor. As long as you can pull bullets out and keep people alive, then you're a good doctor. G will find a way for you to do that." She trusted him to keep his word, although she didn't think that what G meant was what April thought he meant.

"You know, I'm pretty sure that the house that Deeks asked for had three bedrooms. It's all ready and we never moved in. You can talk to Hetty and get the keys after speaking to Mikey." It made sense to use that house, and it wasn't as if she and Marty would move in together now.

"I always thought of this as temporary," she admitted. "It's the one way I can keep my sanity here. That I can believe that it's just a matter of getting enough training to pass once I return. I can't be an agent for the rest of my life."

The thought of never being allowed to leave this base, to go through life doing nothing more than pulling bullets out of people on the field was almost enough to make her hyperventilate, but she pushed back that panic for now. There would be a way. There would be a way. There had to be, she was meant to be a surgeon. Something would make it so. She just had to wait long enough. They'd find a way home.

"We'll see what happens. I'll need to talk to him either way, find out what can and can't be done."

She felt odd taking the house that had been meant for Savannah and Deeks, but she supposed there was no reason to be sentimental about it. "We'll see what Hetty says," she said. "First I have to see if this Mikey is interested in living with two women he doesn't know, one of which sleeps in a coffin. That wouldn't be me, by the way," she added.

That was not an illusion she ever had. She never really thought that they would let them go. Maybe it had been Hetty's reaction, but she just knew that they wouldn't leave. "Maybe we will," she said, not trying to crush all of April's hope, "but as long as we're here, we need to do what we can. The more you learn, the more freedom you get. I'm going to go shopping. By myself. That's... it sounds stupid, but it's great, and I'm going to learn how to shoot if that's the only way to be able to move freely here." Or as freely as possible.

Savannah snorted. "A coffin is...unique." She knew that Abby was weird, but she didn't think that weird. "I'm sure he will, don't worry."

"This is insane," she said, closing her eyes for a moment and feeling like she needed to get seriously drunk. She had never longed to be back among her friends as much as she had at this moment. "You don't believe that," she said. "You wouldn't have tried to kill yourself if you believed that."

For the first time, April could understand the feeling. If there was no hope of going home, if she truly could never see her family and her friends again, if she was denied the right to do what she was meant to do, to follow her passion, then what point was there? The affirmations she used so often to inspire herself, the ways she employed to keep her spirits up when everything felt horrible seemed useless. She'd lived on the hope because there was nothing else to live on here. Working with Abby in the lab was fun enough, but it was not her passion. It was not who she was.

She shivered a bit at the mention of a gun. "I've come to terms with the fact that I wont have a choice," she said. "I'll never like guns though. Not as long as any maniac can use it."

She tried to smile a bit. "I'm happy that you get to move freely." Another thing she missed. She was tired of this base.

"Unique is one word for it. She has them made, apparently. So that there is room for two people in them." She liked Abby, but yes that freaked her out more than a bit.

"No, you're right, I don't believe that it will happen, and if it does, it might take years," she said, smiling, "but that doesn't mean we stop hoping." She couldn't believe she was saying this after her discussion with G, but he was right and most people couldn't live without hope, and Savannah might not believe, but she could give April some. "I do believe that G will do everything he can to get us back and we can help him. When I tried to kill myself, I didn't know anyone and I didn't know him, but now, I trust him, April."

She sighed. "I know it's hard, but you need to do it, because the only way to defend yourself from those maniacs is a gun." Had she really changed so much in a few weeks? She knew that killing was wrong, but now, she'd do anything to get her freedom, even learn how to shoot.

"Freely is a bit too much. GPS, cell, knowing where I am at all times, but I can go out, and I will learn to defend myself so one day I will be allowed- no, I will be able to go out without limitations." She didn't think it would happen quickly, but she'd do what G wanted, and get her freedom in return. "You can do this, April. I know it's hard, but you're moving into a house, and slowly we'll go back to normal. We'll have those parties we talked about and we'll help each other. Even if some of us are a bit unique. After all, I turn into fire; I'm a bit unique myself," she said with a smile.

"How can you if you think he lied to my face about training. I told him I didn't know if I wanted to specialise in paediatric surgery or trauma, and he told me that whatever I chose they'd find a way to make it work. You say you think he never meant for , then he was lying to my face. If he was lying, how can he be trusted?"

She looked at him. "Until they wring it from my hand and use it against me," April replied. "I'll learn because I have no choice, I don't have to like it."

She sighed. "You know, I would be fine with all of this. well not fine, that's the wrong word, but I could live with all of this. I can do this, but if I'm not a surgeon then I'm not me. I know you think I put too much importance in work, and that I don't think of family enough, but to me my work is my passion. It's what I love, it's what I always dreamed of." She shook her head. "I need to speak to G about this," she said. "In the end all of this speculation is useless until I've spoken with him. I need facts, and getting myself worked up before I have them isn't doing me any good." She'd find a way, she had to.

"The house is a good start," she said with a nod. "It seems I have an agenda, doesn't it? Talk to this Mikey and get him to agree to move in with me and Abby, then speak to G and find out what he has in mind. With that I can make a decision." That didn't mean she didn't feel as if all hope had been sucked out of her.

"I don't think he lied, April," she said kindly. "I think that you're saying the same thing and meaning two different things. I'm sure that he will make it happen somehow, but it will be a secondary goal. Our first goal is to survive here, and G can only help so much. I don't think for a moment, he'd lie to you, though."

She frowned. "I think you aren't looking at the bigger picture. They aren't going to teach us how to shoot, but how to defend ourselves. I've been doing boxing and martial arts with Sam. I couldn't take him one on one, but he's teaching me how to use my size and speed to protect myself. A gun is going to be just one element."

Savannah chuckled. "Trust me, I understand completely, but there's no way we can do what we love and survive. I'll give up the family, you'll give up your work, and G will give up the possibility of disappearing and being truly free to protect us. Each and everyone of us will give something up, but you're right. You really should talk to him."

She nodded. "Good luck with everything."

April smiled a bit but it wasn't her usual cheery smile. She was sure that if she closed her eyes she would be able to visualise it all. The scents, the sounds, the rush when there was a major trauma coming in. She couldn't focus on that now though, she needed to focus on her future, and she'd fight to get back what she was born to do. No matter what, she would at least try. She owed it to herself.

Listening to Savannah she didn't sound like herself, she didn't sound like the girl who'd told her not to tell G about the massacre because then they'd all have to learn how to shoot. "I told you I'll do my best, and I'll do the training, but I'll never be able to think using a gun is a good thing." She smiled a bit. "I'll do my best," she repeated.

"You'll give up the family?" April asked, truly worried now, because that was a major change in just a few days. "A week ago you told me nothing else mattered, that your worse fear was turning into them, and now you're ready to give it up?" That wasn't just a small change, that was a life altering change, and those didn't just happen in a week for no reason. It was as big a change as Christina quitting the hospital.

"Thanks," she said anyway, because that was the polite thing to do.

"I know you did, but you need to believe it, not me," she said, smiling.

Savannah shrugged. "I won't, but I have. It's ... it's impossible. I can't start a family with someone from this dimension, because we might be able to go home and then I'd have to leave a husband and children behind," she said. "And with the people from our dimension?" She smiled. "Let's just say that a family isn't possible."

She took a deep breath and smiled. "Instead, I'm going to do what I can here, and since unlike everyone else, I don't have a major yet, so I'll change my classes, use the ones I had as electives and get a degree in Criminal Justice and train with the team and also separately. I like the physical part anyway. I'm good at that. I put my ten mile run daily, do weights. I still do my tumbling and jumping. Give me a few months and then I'll protect you," she said winking at April, her smile getting even bigger. "Really, we'll be fine, helping each other."

"But that doesn't mean you have to give it up entirely," she said. "Waiting, sure, but you don't know who'll be pulled through that rift. And you could get married if we ever get home, or here and take the risk. Granted I wouldn't, but I'm not you. A family isn't what's most important to me."

"You're still young, Savannah, putting things on hold doesn't have to mean to give them up." Surely they wouldn't be here forever. Gods she hoped not.

She smiled a bit, because in a way Savannah sounded nearly excited about this. "If it's what you really want, I'm happy for you," she said, smiling a bit when Savannah continued. "As long as we help each other we'll find a way." She hoped, though with a bit less belief than before.

"I'd rather not wait for something that might never happen, in either reality," she said. "If it happens, then fine, but it's not going I'll be waiting for. I have to make something with my life, something that it's likely to happen."

Savannah smiled. "And I was thinking how I'm getting too old not to have a fiance, but it doesn't really matter. We'll just see what happens."

There she went, talking about what she wanted. Couldn't they all figure out that wanting was relative to what they could do. "It's what's best."

She couldn't say anything to argue that. Waiting around wasn't going to help Savannah, but she didn't think giving up on things were the right way to go either.

"You're not too old," she said instead. "If you live until you're in your eighties or more, what does it matter if you met the man of your dreams at 21 or 31? You can still make a life together, create a home. It's not less of a marriage because it starts later. It might not be exactly what you planned, and I'm not saying sit around and wait and do nothing of your life, just that you shouldn't see the dream as over just because it can't happen now. Things change, who know what will change next?"

"Why would you want to have children when you're old?" she asked with a frown. "Children should have young parents, and not these people having children in their mid forties or later. That's not what God and nature intended. Just because doctors made it happen, it doesn't mean that we should. Children should have parents that are young and have energy and understand the newer generations."

She shook her head. "I'm not going to do that to a child of mine, just like I couldn't have a child here and then forced to leave without him or her." She hadn't really thought of that until now, but if she had a child here, they could use the child to keep her behind or force her to separate. No, she couldn't do that either. "It's all right, April. It's not the end of the world and it's much easier to be realistic than disappointed."

"30 is not old," April replied softly. "Plenty of children have parents who were in their thirties when they were born, as for what God intended, Sarah was ninety and that's a far bit more than thirty."

In the end it would be Savannah's choice and her life, depending of course of what happened here, but she did want her to see that her life didn't need to be over. At least she hoped so. They had to get home one day, didn't they?

"I'm not telling you what to do," she said. "Just, if we do get to go home, keep an open mind?" she said. "See what you want if that happens, judge the situation for what it ends up to be."

"Thirty is not old, but you'll be forty by the time they finish elementary school, and again the fact that people do it doesn't make it right." Savannah was too used to people using the Bible to rebut her arguments to be ruffled. "And if I'm chosen from God, so be it, but I doubt it."

Savannah smiled. "I know, but I'm not thinking about going home. I'll deal with it if it ever happens. For now, I'm focused to what's happening here, and here, there's no husband or family. I'm going to train and become a great agent. Everything else can wait for now."

April still didn't think that was old, and she wasn't about to start thinking herself too old for children. Savannah had a point though, here there was no chance of a family. Not unless you wanted to risk being separated. She still thought it odd that Savannah was so eager to become what she did not want to be a week ago though. Then she'd argued that she would have a family regardless.

It seemed that no matter the opinion might be, Savannah was always certain she was right. She nodded, smiling a bit. "Good luck," she said honestly. "I hope it is truly the right choice for you and that you'll be happy with it."

Taking a deep breath, she decided that it was time she left. She had a lot of thinking to do and plans for tomorrow. It seemed she had two important meetings tomorrow, with two men who had no clue she was coming. "I should go," she said. "It seems I have a lot to do tomorrow so I might as well start planning for it."
