RP: Alexis and Reid
Who: Alexis and Reid
Where: Team house
When: September 23, 2011
Summary: It's a date

Alexis had finally found the time for the date with Reid. Next week she'd be certified and qualified, which meant that she had to spend plenty of time at the range, but tonight was the weekend and tomorrow they would go to the salon, and then she could put more hours in the afternoon. All of that meant that she could have some fun.

She didn't go crazy, but got some food from a local restaurant. Nothing too crazy, just two containers of food and after meeting up with Reid, they went to the center. She sat up in one of the back rooms where there wasn't much of anything. Just tables and chairs. There were also no people, which was perfect "I hope you like the food. I didn't go for anything too innovative. Chicken Marsale or Veil Francese, you can pick what you want of we can share a piece of each. I don't mind either way. I got water and a bottle of red if you like. If not, we can always donate it to the club here."

Spencer liked Alexis, she was nice and they liked the same things, so when she suggested dinner he was eager to accept. She'd taken care of everything, apparently wine as well and Reid felt like he should have contributed at least a little more than he had.

Things had been tense for him at home, first between him and Morgan and now with Emily back from the dead and he was having trouble thinking about anything else. His mind drifted between Morgan and Emily and the rest of his team and he really didn't want to think about them anymore, he'd thought about them until he'd given himself a spinning headache and enough was enough.

"I bet it's great," Spencer said with a smile, producing two plates and two glasses and setting them down on one of the tables. "Red sounds nice," he agreed, holding out her chair for her.

Alexis sat down, smiling at him. "Thank you," she said, smiling at him. "So split them up?" she asked as she opened the containers and started to serve it.

She wasn't really interested in the food. Not that she didn't want good food, she did, and she had tried to get that, but she was more interested in the company. She hadn't spent a lot of time with Reid, recently, and she enjoyed their discussion.

"You've been busy, it seems. There's a new person from your team, right? You must be happy about it." Except that Reid didn't look very happy lately. He'd been happier at the beginning.

"I think that sounds good, best of both worlds," Spencer said, smiling back and watching as she served the food. He and JJ used to eat dinner together, she'd cook sometimes or they'd eat take away and try not to talk about work. His team were his family and he was used to spending time with them either as a group or one on one.

It looked good and it smelled better and he poured the wine while she served them up half of each meal. It was nice to share, that's what he would have done with one of his closest friends.

Reid drummed his fingers on the table when she brought up Emily, not knowing how much he wanted to disclose. "I've been busy," he agreed with a little nod of his head. "Happy isn't exactly a word I'd use," Spencer admitted, looking down into his wine. "It's complicated."

"Perfect." She was used to sharing at home, picking from other people's plates, so this worked out just fine. "Not for me," she said, when he poured the wine. "I never got into the habit of drinking alcohol. I know some of my friends did it to rebel, but my dad always offered, and I just don't like the taste of it."

She reached over and squeezed his hand. "Are you okay?" Because it didn't sound happy at all. "You can tell me, you know. I won't tell anyone, no matter what it is." She smiled at him. "Grands says that you aren't supposed to keep things inside. It's not good for you spirituality and internal well being, and a lot of other things. It was during her Zen's phase."

She refused the wine and Spencer nodded, making sure he only had half a glass himself then. "I didn't drink until I was in my early twenties, even still I only drink wine and beer every now and then," Spencer explained, he'd only really started drinking wine because other people did but then he'd started to like it.

Looking down at her hand on his he sighed, his forehead creasing. He didn't mind her hands on his and they'd danced so the contact was becoming less intimidating. "Yes," he said with a little smile, because he was, he was okay. Turning his hand under hers he gave it a quick squeeze before he pulled away. Reid didn't know how much to share so he thought it was better to eat first while he thought about it. "It'll get cold," he pointed out with a little smile. "Let's eat and then we can talk?" Reid offered.

"Maybe in a few years, I'll learn to like it, or maybe not. I'm not too worried. I've never worried about what other people think," she said with an easy smile and a shrug. "Still, you don't have to stop because of me."

Alexis let go and picked up the fork. "I can tell you a secret. We can eat and talk at the same time," she said, trying not to giggle "I know it's a very hard concept to accept, even for a genius like you, but it's true. You can do both at the same time."

"It grows on you, a little," Reid said with a smile. "And you didn't have to get wine just for me, but thank you," he added, as he picked up his cutlery.

Spencer laughed, okay she had a point. "Okay, I was trying to give myself some time to think, you clever little know it all," he said with a fond smile. "So we can talk and eat, Spencer said with a nod, looking down at his dinner. Thinking about it all kind of put him off his food but he'd decided he didn't want to tell Alexis about how he felt about Morgan, because when it didn't work out he wanted to be able to keep those feelings to himself.

"My team at home are a family and after Morgan and Garcia vanished there was an incident and someone on my team was killed. It was hard, the hospital, the funeral, trying to get along after it," Spencer explained, pausing to take a bite. "And then she appeared here, like a ghost and it turns out she didn't pass away, she went into witness protection."

Alexis chuckled. "Of course I got it for you. It's not the first time that I got wine for other people, so it's fine. My boyfriend liked beer, not that he was supposed to drink, but we're not telling anyone."

"Oh, now I'm the know it all?" She laughed. "I thought you were the genius. I'm just pointing out the obvious, but I'll stop doing that if you like," she teased.

She took a few bites as he talked, listening and frowning. "Man, that must suck," she said after a while. I mean I get why, and everyone here is big on secrets, but I'd be really upset if they kept a secret like that. One time, my dad was helping the police on this case and there was the possibility of a bomb in New York, and he pushed my grandmother and I to go away, but he wouldn't say why. We went to a spa, but returned early, only to find out that he was kidnapped, and he could have died. He was in the middle of everything. I was so happy to have him back, but I was also so angry at him for not telling us." She said. "Secrets suck, especially with family."

"I can keep a secret," he said with a little smile. Spencer really only drank socially, not enough to get drunk, when he'd wanted to take his head somewhere else he'd got lost in something harder.

"You can be the junior know it all," Spencer said, nudging her shin gently under the table. Alexis reminded him a little bit of himself and he smiled down into his dinner.

Putting down his cutlery he tilted his head back, rubbing his forehead. "People keep secrets because they think it's for the best, they think that the burden of the truth is too much, but the truth is the most important thing." Reid said softly towards the ceiling. "Trust is more important than anything," he added. His team were everything to him and the reason that he felt like he could be himself with them was because of that trust.

"I know you can. I wouldn't have said anything otherwise." She stopped for a moment. "Not that it matters since we're stuck in different dimensions. I doubt you want to tell so badly that you'd find his version here just to tell his parents that he drinks beer."

Alexis pretended to think for a moment, and then nodded. "I guess I can be. It's not like you're the only know it all around anyway. Sheldon is so much worse. He actually tells people tat he's a genius."

She watched him, and this was clearly bothering him more than he wanted to admit. "I know," she said softly. "I agree with you. People always try to say that they are protecting you. You're too young, you shouldn't have to deal with this, but they are really protecting themselves, because they can't face you knowing the truth." She reached for him again, covering his hand with hers "It's okay to be upset because of this. They should have told you the truth, and it's their fault, but if they mean so much to you, then you should also forgive them. Just because they made a mistake, it doesn't mean you have to make things worse."

"Underage drinking is really the least of my concerns," Reid said, taking a sip of his wine.

It was nice to be appreciated, for people to appreciate how smart he was. Sure people had been impressed by him in the past, he'd been young and obviously advanced and he'd received plenty of positive feedback. But it had always been at a cost. Being smart didn't win you friends, didn't win you lots of things. It was lonely.

Rubbing his face again he shook his head. "I've lied. I've lied about important things and I've lied to my friends, my family. I've put them in danger and I'm not noble, I'm a hypocrite," he pointed out, although it felt really good to say it out loud for once. "I talk about how betrayed I feel when I've made people feel like that, too. And I just..." Spencer leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table and his head in his hands. "I don't know how to forgive, I'm not emotionally equipped for this," he said.

Reid was trying to think like Morgan, to put it all in perspective like he would. But it was hard and he really did just want to feel entitled to be upset and betrayed forever. But he wasn't and he knew that, he wasn't entitled to anything and it had been a long time coming for him to truly realize that.

Alexis chuckled. "I doubt you're the only one who feels like that." Her dad was an example, but then her dad was the one who usually gave her the drinks.

Once again, she wondered how difficult it must have been to be so smart, to grow up a lot sooner than people did and never learn to deal with the social aspect of life. "Spencer, everyone lies. Sometimes because we are trying to protect other people and sometimes because we're trying to protect ourselves. As much as I agree with you that the truth is the most important thing, the reality is that people will lie from time to time. The point is knowing what you've done, and ask for forgiveness just like you learn to forgive them"

She stood up and put her hands on his shoulder before leaning down and kissing his head. "It's okay, Spencer. It's not the end of the world. It's hard and it sucks, but you can learn to deal with this, just like you've learned everything else. You learn to accept that you're a genius, but you're still just a man who makes mistakes and that your friends are also smart, sensitive and still human and they make mistakes too. If it makes it feel you better, I usually ground myself, and that helps me forgive myself. You really need to do that, before you can forgive them."

Spencer hadn't to asked for forgiveness though, he'd never said he was sorry for what happened. He'd apologized to himself and his body and told himself he was better than that but he'd never even considered apologizing to Morgan or anyone else for the lies or what he'd lied about. Maybe that was because it had been on him, about him, or maybe he was just selfish. "And sometimes we lie because we're doing something we know we shouldn't and we don't want anyone to tell us to stop," he said softly, wondering if that's exactly what Emily had been thinking. Spencer needed to forgive her, but more than that he secretly wanted to, he wanted her back.

He felt her come closer and then her lips on his head and he gave a little smile. She was young, she'd obviously been through a lot but she'd never quite understand and he was glad for that. The less people that understood the things they went through, especially kids, the better.

He leaned forward a little bit into her, into the physical comfort of someone he'd started to trust. It still didn't feel right, not really. Spencer liked her, she was beautiful and while of course she was too young for him it was more than that. They weren't the strong hands he liked to feel on his shoulders or the lips the lips he felt drawn to on his skin. Spencer sighed, pressing his lips together and nodding. "I'm smart when it comes to some things, I'm not when it comes to others. Sometimes I'm more than a regular person and sometimes I'm so much less," he said, his voice cracking a little bit.

Alexis smiled. "It's not really much different than protecting ourselves. I'm not saying that what we're trying to protect it's a good thing. We lie because we don't want people to know that we did something we are ashamed of or we didn't do something we should have. In the end, we're still protecting ourselves, or we think we are, because let's face it, if we lie, it's because we feel guilty, and we know what we're doing is wrong, but again, we all make mistakes. The important is to find a way to move past those mistakes."

She rubbed his arm as he came closer, smiling softly. "You can't be smart in everything, or you'd be God, and no one should be that smart. It's why you have friends, because they can help you when you are less. That doesn't make you inferior, and there's nothing to be ashamed of. You're just better at some other things. Just like some people are better at physical jobs, some at the mental ones, some are more inclined toward the arts, others toward literature, some toward the science. We're all different, Spencer. It's really okay not to be perfect in every area." She leaned down. "Really, it's fine to be you and not aim for perfection."

It felt different, protecting himself was one thing, but not wanting to be told to stop because it was wrong and he was doing it anyway and he didn't feel bad about it, that seemed different. But he was never going to go into specifics with her. Telling Mike, who understood and was on the same page about it all was one thing, but he never wanted her to look at him with eyes that knew. Morgan had said they were a family, hell he spent half his life telling people they were a family and Spencer knew that meant forgiving Emily even if he wasn't sure she deserved it. He'd forgiven his mother for worse.

He liked hearing her talk, it didn't matter so much what she said because she was just telling him things he already knew, but that wasn't the point. "I'm not aiming for perfection," Spencer said quietly, looking up at her. He just wanted to be a little bit more normal, not so sensitive, not so innocent in a lot of ways. "I think it would be nice to be a little bit less like me and a little bit more normal. Have normal experiences, feel things like other people do," he said with a little sigh.

She tipped his nose with a finger and smiled. "You're just fine the way you are, Spencer Reid."

Alexis pulled the chair closer and sat down, holding his hand between his. "Spencer, have you considered that you aren't really different, but that you haven't learned what we learn," she asked, softly. "What I mean is that you learn a lot of the social rules when you're in school, with people your own age. You were so smart and so advanced that you weren't with other peers, and while you obtained all of your degrees, you never learned to be… normal. You need the chance to learn what most people learn while in high school, and then you'll feel things like everyone else, because you'll know the social norms. However these aren't things you can learn from the books. I'm sure as a profiler, you get to learn all about human behavior, but knowing what that behavior is and feeling it is different. This is one area where the books are inferior to lab work."

He smiled, wrinkling his nose a little bit. It was nice to hear and he blushed, looking down at his knees. "Well thank you, Alexis Castle."

Looking down at their hands he sighed, this was not the sort of conversation he should have been having with her. Their dinner that she'd gone to the trouble to get was getting cold and really, she wasn't trained for this. But they were just talking, friends, so that didn't really matter. "Are you going to teach me how to be a real man?" Spencer asked with a little chuckle. "Social interaction for dummies?" He had no idea how this young woman thought he could change when he was clearly different to everyone else.

"It's not just missing out on social norms, it's me," he admitted, fiddling with his watch that was fastened on top of his sleeve.

"You're very welcome, Dr. Reid," she answered, laughing.

Alexis shook her head. "I have a hard enough time being a teenager," she answered, smiling, "but high school really teaches you a lot more than those behavioral classes you and Derek teach. Oh sure, there are patterns and illnesses, and blah blah, but people aren't all the same. At best you have patterns, but not one person is exactly like someone else."

As fascinating as it was, she refused to believe that human interaction boiled down to statistic. "You are you, and I'm me, and each one of us is the sum of our experiences. You said in one of those classes that an UnSub can remain emotional immature if he was in jail, right? Because they don't develop the skills that others do. Why are you different? Sure you weren't in jail, but you were in a college, a genius, a mind to be cultivated, separate from those your age. I'm not disputing that your mind is different. You wouldn't be as brilliant otherwise, but maybe something else suffered in your quest for knowledge, like that emotional maturity you were explaining in class."

He was being profiled by a teenager, she was profiling him and it wasn't a terrible job. "Even when I was in school when I was younger, with people my own age, it didn't go well for me," Spencer pointed out, shaking his head. Some people were people people, like Morgan, he made people comfortable and at ease because he seemed so at east. Spencer had never had that easiness about him, he'd always struggled, since he was a little boy.

"You've very smart and you're very quick," he said with a little smile. "I lack emotional maturity but there's more than that," Spencer said, clearing his throat. "Those my age couldn't challenge me and could never accept me, if I'd gone through high school tortured worse than I already was. I don't think it would be possible for me to be any different," he admitted, looking down at his watch.

Clearing his throat he shook his head. "Enough of this, dinner is getting cold and you shouldn't be profiling the profiler," he said, giving her a little smile.

"When you were in school with people your age, you were seven," she said, laughing. "That's hardly the time for maturity, either on your part or theirs."

She looked at him, smiling. "I'm not saying that you did the wrong thing or that if you could go back in time, you should change what you did. Your genius defines you in a way. No one likes to know that the kid sitting next to you is so much smarter than you, so I get why you did what you did, but you don't stop maturing because you leave high school. It might not be as easy or as natural, but you can still learn now, and you will never be like everyone else, because you're brilliant, but you can be more like everyone else and it sounds that it's the only thing you want."

Alexis patted his hand. "Look at it this way. It's a scale from genius to normality. You're not as well adjusted as Dom, but you're nowhere as bad as Sheldon. I'm sure you can learn to be more like Dom," she said, winking at him. "Okay, no more profiling, although that sounds to me like common sense. Let's eat."
