Any day was a good day when there was a new book involved. Hera had spent the better part of her free Friday afternoon selecting what she wanted to look through today. It had been a hard choice, but she'd finally picked a book about the natural wonders of the world to settle down with and enjoy at the lovely little bistro table along with a steaming hot espresso. Her research lately had taken her away from some of the more scientific angles, looking at the things she and her siblings and their children had managed in times of old. Really, science was the new God, no matter what anyone said, either her or the cults to new gods that had sprung up in the last two thousand years. There were clues here. There were clues everywhere. She'd always known that, but now she was wondering if some of the clues might be closer than she'd thought. The natural sciences always made her think about things she hadn't thought of since she'd found her powers so limited as to be almost gone.
Like this interesting tidbit about snakes. Hera had never been overly fond of snakes herself. If anything, they tended to be a bit of a disappointment to her since she'd sent some to take care of an annoying little problem in the form of her husband's favorite child, and they'd failed. Against a baby. Really, snakes as a source of fear and awe were over rated. They couldn't even kill a baby! Granted, a demi-god baby, but still!
It was a lovely afternoon, though. The sun was shining but the breeze was keeping her comfortably cool, the book was intriguing, and the coffee was perking her up after a boring morning of Faculty meetings to prepare for the fall semester. She could almost forget her troubles on a day like today, good book in hand. Suddenly, a shadow fell across the page, making her look up in surprise.
