Perhaps some of the other students on the island were feeling relieved that they had gotten through their written exams. Most of them probably had a pretty good idea of how they went; at least whether they had passed or failed. Makola had no idea whether he had passed or failed, and although he understood that failing was not a great thing, he had not had the same exposure to an education system growing up, so he was not really concerned about the outcome. Still, everyone else seemed on edge about doing the best that they could, and he couldn't help but get caught up in the pressure now that he could grasp what it was all about.
At least there was only the Healing Practical left. He thought he had done well at the Water practical. He understood magic in a way that transcended words and reading and writing and exams, and he understood water as well. Water was universal. Of course there was a lot more of it on the island than he'd been used to before, but even that now was becoming just a part of life. He really was becoming a native.
He wasn't sure how to prepare for the Healing practical. There had been a lot of focus on the written exam, for that subject, the result of which he had no great confidence in. Early in the morning he got up and went out to the beach, dressed only in his most comfortable pair of shorts, his only other adornment the baboon fang that hung on its thong around his neck. There were few people up this early, and it was peaceful and cool on the beach. He took his book with him, sat on the sand and flipped through it, trying to remember the process for various Healing spells, in case they would be asked to perform them. He liked when they got to practice spells. When he got something right it emphasised to him that he was in the right place, finally, that he had made the right choice in coming here, and that one day he would be able to do great spells that would allow him to perform miracles of Healing.
In the meantime however after four long days of intense brain work, he thought he'd be lucky if he could manage even if a mini whirlpool in a bowl. And whirlpools were his very favourite trick.
