Who: Adam & Shiri
What: Marriage Proposal
Where: Their house (mostly)
When: Monday, March 28, 2011
Warnings: None
Shiri’s adventure had begun at the university and not just because that is what she called her Monday schedule that started with an 8:05 PM lab and ended either when she was officially fed up with the human race or 4:45 PM, whichever came first. No, her adventure had begun at school because that was where she found the first page of a comic page that had been slipped into her messenger bag.
The albino muse couldn’t help herself when she was clearly the main character of the comic and it first led her to a bakery. It was exactly what she needed as a pick-me-up after her morning lab. Chocolate croissants always made the academic Monday mornings feel less oppressive but then it had come with another comic page.
It was then and only then did she realize she was on a full blown scavenger hunt set up by her mortal. Which really the time between her classes more bearable...
During her musical theory class she spent her time turning the flowers that had been set aside for her into a floral crown to wear as she went to the next step of the hunt and followed her illustrated alter ego in the comic page that came with them. Her next class was passed by eating all the honey sticks from her favorite little bodega that sold them and figuring out where she was to go next. Her final class was passed with her toying with the edges of the comic page that had come with the white lace scarf/veil from a small family run shop the previous page had led her to...
But now she was on her way home. The comic page she found demanded her to do so! She slavishly followed its instructions panel by panel. She approached the house and then traveled through the hall and entered their bedroom. The panels demanded her to go toward her shrine and with a small smile she knelt down before it. The comic page told her Adam would be peeking through the doorway but it also told her she would reach to pick up the box.
Slavishly following the comic had gotten her this far and she enjoyed gifts very much.
But as she opened the jewelry box, it was no piece of jewelry but another page.
Carefully unrolling it, she giggled. Oh, was he going to be standing in the doorway now? Well, she supposed she should turn around then...
The hunt had be interesting for the mortal to set up. He’d had to pan where to set the locations, and how to make the arrangements, on top of actually drawing the comic pages that would be the pictured directions. But now, as he watched his muse enter their bedroom, himself dressed in a new white dress shirt and clean jeans, he knew it’d been more then worth it. She looked very happy and excited, and seemed to have gained all of the prizes thus far. Good. He wanted her to have and enjoy her gifts.
So he watched as she moved forward to claim the box, and stepped into the room a bit further taking the standing pose that was drawn, as he waited for her to completely turn and face him.
So close to her own shrine consecrated to her in a room dedicated to her, she could almost feel when he stepped into the room. She knew he was there and placing the comic page on the ground, she rose to her feet to face him with a grin, “Are you going to hand me a new page or are you my final reward?”
Adam grinned at the question, and stepped forward into the room until he was able to place a kiss upon her forehead. “I was hoping...” He paused, and seemed to stumble for a moment, the words he was thinking to say catching in his mouth for a moment before he gave a small chuckle. Here was the muse of eloquence before him, and Adam, Mr Calm, was getting tongue tied. He dropped his head for a moment, then raised it to look his goddess in the eye. “I was hoping that you would be my reward,” he said.
Then, right after speaking, the mortal took a half step back, and lowered himself to one knee. He drew his hands from his pockets, and held a ring between his fingers. A ring his mother had given to him over a year ago now, for one very specific purpose. “Shiri, will you marry me?”
The muse of eloquence was struck momentarily speechless. She didn’t know what she had been expecting but it certainly wasn’t this. But struck speechless as she may have been for the moment, it hadn’t stopped her from reaching out and brushing her fingertips along the ring and his fingers.
She took a deep breath to reclaim control over herself. How long had she wanted him to ask? How much she wanted to say yes but... “You know what I am going to say...”
Adam continued to look up to her, lifting his eyebrows slightly at her silence, and then her words that eventually followed. He blinked, but kept where he was. “I do?”
She let her hand rest completely over the ring and his. With her other, she cupped his face. It may have been been Shiri touching him, but it was Polyhymnia looking to him... Every part of her wanted to say yes but not without permission. “You do. You should.”
He regarded her, considering everything and wondering if there had been a conversation that they had had while he’d been half asleep and not really able to remember. She hadn’t said yes or no, which meant that it was something more complicated... And then he realized, she didn’t know about the tasks that he had done for Apollo. “I have Apollo’s permission...”
Her eyes widened? He had Apollo’s permission? “You do? How?”
Now the mortal grinned, and chuckled. “I asked him for permission awhile ago, and he gave me tasks to complete before he would grant it.” He gave a slight shrug as he kept his eyes up to the muse. “I completed them, and he decided that I could ask you to marry me.”
The muse leaned down and placed a kiss just at his hairline. She knew he was not going to lie to her... not about anything, but especially about her musagetes. And especially not knelt down before her and before her shrine. That meant every word was true. Shiri smiled and straightened up again, “Yes. Of course I will.”`
The grin on Adam’s face grew even broader at her acceptance, and he straightened to wrap her in his arms, hugging her tight before dipping his head to give her a kiss. Even if there hadn’t been much doubt about what she would say, he felt relieved that she accepted. He took his time with the kiss, before pulling back just enough that he could slip the ring to her finger. “My great grandmother gave this ring to my grandmother on her wedding day. My grandmother gave it to my mother the day I was born. My mother gave the ring to me, so that I could give it to you....” He chuckled softly to himself as he remembered the conversation that had gone with it.
So the ring passes from female to female... It went to Adam because Kathy only had a son. I will keep this in mind... She thought to herself as she glanced down at the ring down on her finger. With a continued smile, she draped her arms around his shoulders, pressing close to him, “Did you get the marriage license, too?”
Once the ring was safely on her finger, he wrapped his arms around her waist, one hand idly tracing her back in his normal manner. He shook his head slightly at the question, then chuckled. “I think we both have to be present to get it.”
She let out a long disappointed whine as she closed her eyes and tucked her head beneath his chin. It was all she could do to not stomp her feet in her displeasure. She was too happy to be engaged for stomping but still... “That means we have to wait three days... I want to be married now.”
Adam laughed at her response, and twisted his head to try and kiss the top of her hair. “We can go tomorrow and see what needs to be done if you want to skip your classes to do that,” he offered, then gave a small shrug. “Do you want your sisters to come?” He realized he’d probably need to call his mom, and see if she wanted to come down for it as well.
Well... she did need two witnesses if she remembered what she had read about on the Internet. Or maybe she had seen that in a movie. Unimportant for the moment. “Yes, they would probably kill me if I did not ask them to come even though we can have a bigger, more festive wedding later. This needs to happen as soon as possible...” It suddenly dawned on her this was the second time in this life time that she was marrying a man for legal status... If she was not making up Shiri Eneas’ life as she went along for the outside mortal world, she would really wonder and have to figure out what was up with herself to do this twice... But at least she loved Adam. Legal status was a much needed bonus. “My classes can be skipped. This is more important...”
He grinned at her response and kissed her forehead once more. “Alright, we’ll take care of everything we can tomorrow, and have the wedding on... Friday?” It was asked, unsure if that was the soonest that it could be done, but wanting a specific date so he could make arrangements for his mother. And so they could get the others free to help them as well.
That probably was the soonest it could be done with a three day waiting period. Shiri settled again, pressing once more close to him but this time also at ease. Her annoyance of having to wait was gone. Annoyance had no room in her mind anymore. Her mind was dedicated solely to plotting and planning for the next three days and how quickly she could drop her double major and get her graduation application again.
She giggled lightly against him as she realized her married name would be on the diploma. That fact and being a senior so late in the spring semester were the lone facts that kept her from just dropping out completely. “Is Friday good for you? You probably want your mother to be here...”
“Yeah. She’d probably have a fit if I didn’t invite her, even for a court wedding...” He chuckled again as she settled against him, and continued to rub her back lightly. His mother, her sisters. Probably her brother? Mentally the mortal wondered who else they should invite, or even could invite, before deciding to worry about later. “Did you like the hunt?” he asked softly.
His soft tone intrigued her but not enough to pull away to catch his eyes to silently ask why his voice had hushed for that question. She was much too comfortable against her new fiance and enjoying his touch against his back. “Of course, I did. Two shops with sweets, a new scarf... making myself a flower crown... all led by the work my beloved artist leading to this? What is there that I would not enjoy?”
Adam could only smile more broadly at her response. “Good,” he said simply, pleased that the work had paid off.
She began tugging at one of his t-shirt sleeves when their conversation fell into a comfortable silence.
Adam lifted an eyebrow at the action, and pulled his arm from her back, moving it to offer it to her more, silently curious just what she was trying to accomplish.
Just trying to get his attention. “I am tired,” she murmured against him when she was certain she had, “You had me running around all day...”
The mortal laughed and shifted his arms to pick the muse up. “Couch or bed?” he asked, considering where might be best.
She shrugged in his arms, “Now that you are carrying me, [Soon-to-be-husband], I am pretty content.” All she wanted was to be off her feet and in his arms. Where he took her was not her concern.
Adam nodded at the words, before deciding what his own preference would be. He checked that his soon-to-be-wife was safe within his hold, and began to exit the bedroom. “[Are you hungry?]” he asked.
“[Did you make me food to go along with my scavenger hunt across the city?]” she murmured in questioned reply as she relaxed in his arms, cuddling against him just enough to do so but not enough to be too squirmy and then be dropped. She had gotten very good at that careful balance over the centuries and was using all of her skill at it now.
It was a very useful thing that she’d mastered it, and the mortal was able to carry her all the way to the couch easily. He sat down, and settled Shiri in his lap, as he gave a small shake of his head. “[No, but I can cook some for you,]” he offered. Automatically, his arms loop around her once more, and began to trace against her back.
“No,” she clung to him softly as she replied, “[I just want to be with my fiance right now. No you going and doing something.]”
Adam chuckled and hugged her close, kissing the top of her forehead briefly. “[As you wish,]” he grinned.
She began to snuggle close only to then feel the soft sensation of the flower pedals pressing against her skin. Oops, forgot about the flower crown. Carefully, she put the floral crown on the coffee table and then returned to snuggling close, encouraged by his strong embrace. There was something about being held by her priest-turned-fiance coupled with the security that marrying him would be bring her that made her even more snuggling than usual. “I suppose it is for the best we have to wait the three days,” she murmured against his throat, “There is a lot I have to do to prepare...”
“Oh?” He lifted an eyebrow slightly as he asked the question, and began to run his hand slowly up and down her back. He’d watched the flower crown get moved to the side table, amused at how she had taken his gift and make it more into something for herself. He hadn’t given much thought to what things she might have to do for the wedding, though he hadn’t expected her to want the wedding as quickly as possible either.
Do not mention all the paper work you have to fill out. Do not mention it even though he has forms he has to fill out or at least sign. That will break the romantic mood of the moment and probably make Vally cry from a distance... Shiri thought to herself in the most rapid series of thoughts she had had in a long time as she kissed his jaw gently and then pulled away enough to look to him and then to her brand new ring. “... Well, I have to find something to wear and a ring for you...”
The mortal grinned with her statement, and looked over the clothes that she already had on, before he looked back up to her. “Are you going to go shopping for a new dress then?” he asked. Idly he saw in his minds eyes, Shiri going to the jewelry shops and trying to find a ring suitable for him. It was another thing he hadn’t given much thought to, as the ring presented to her had been from his mother. The challenge had been keeping it hidden from her.
“Of course I am. It is my duty as a bride in this modern time, regardless of how quickly we are getting married...” Not shopping for a dress... that would just be ridiculous. Besides, she didn’t have a dress she especially wanted to wear in her closet. “But it being a civil wedding, I do not have to go to an extreme.” The ring would be harder... but she had an idea of where she could find one if all worked out.
The fact that her ring seemed to fit so well seemed a small miracle to Adam. He’d assumed that he’d have to get it refitted for her at some point, and maybe find another actual wedding ring. That, however, were thoughts for a later time. “Do you know what color you want to wear then?” He tried to consider what style of dress even she’d wish to wear, and wondered if she’d surprise him, or show him before hand.
If he wanted to get that ring off of her to even think of refitting it, he would have to wrestle it from her cold dead hands and her being dead would just be counterproductive to. While it was a little loose, she would get a ring guard put on it later, or more likely put a ring guard on her eventual wedding ring and trap this ring behind it. Shiri rested once more against him, “I figured I would wear green for our civil wedding in keeping with my own mortal life.”
“Green?” Well, he hadn’t exactly been expecting that answer, but, he had asked. “Why is green a traditional color?” he questioned, then shifted to kiss her temple lightly. He’d have to ask her and learn about the ring later, probably after the civil ceremony.
She knew he wasn’t. She knew he was expecting her to say blue or white, the traditional wedding colors of the West. But, even as she settled further against him and ran the stone of her engagement ring against the inside of his arm, she couldn’t help but shrug a little, “Green is the color for the Middle East and that is where I claim to be from...” Kind of. Afghanistan was a bit far for the Middle East but that’s how the news called it.
“Oh.” He blinked. That was simple enough. He had been expecting her to say blue, though that was far more because it was one of the colors she seemed to favor. Purple might have been another. He considered for a moment, and gave a small shrug. “Is there anything else you need to get for the wedding then?”
“Green will make my school friends tease me less as they expect it and it does look nice on me so why not really?” Finally, a use for her pink eyes -- making green look nice on her. A small smirk crossed her face as her mind couldn’t help but remember why the Middle East and many other Muslim societies choose green as the marriage color -- it was just the Prophet Mohammad’ s favorite color. The religion’s devotion to the color was almost superstitious and that pleased her for a civil wedding. “But no, there is nothing else I need for the wedding. Nothing but you...”
“Good.” He tipped his head to kiss her briefly, then settled in once more. They’d covered who would be there, what she would wear... “Do you know what you want me to wear?” he asked after a moment of thought.
Men had choices in this country beyond tux or something resembling a suit? Had television lied to her? She momentarily glanced over at the television and glared at it for its plotting against her but then let out a breath. The television was forgotten for now. “Just put on some nice slacks, a white shirt and that suit jacket I made you wear to your first art showing. It is a civil wedding. We do not need to be dressed too over the top...”
Her eyes slipped shut as she once more tucked her head against his throat and draped one of her arms around him. She murmured softly, “I was beginning to worry that you would never ask me...”
His choices might have been more limited in a manner, but at least he was thinking to ask. He nodded mildly as she told him about the suit outfit that she wished him to wear, thinking briefly to the stated event and trying to recall what it was. He’d probably find it hanging up as soon as he went looking for it. At her second statement though, he lifted an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“We have been together for a while...” Shiri was going to bring up how she had taken up a double major just to get herself more years in university and hence more years on her student visa... now that she could drop that major and graduate without fear, it was gone from her mind. An unimportant fact. Still, he had taken his time in asking. Her mortals were usually more prompt but, “I guess it makes since you sought permission...”
They also were already living together, and doing many things that a married couple did. Still... “That was one of the delays. We also had all the shows going,” he added. It was, most likely, a rather lame excuse, but it had added to backing up some of his time, instead turning it over to art and prints and galleries. He grinned at her, “Have I asked soon enough?”
It was an acceptable, albeit an odd excuse, to the muse in his arms. She nodded with a smile, “Yes. Soon enough for me to graduate in your name.”
Adam chuckled and held her close, giving his muse-fiance-goddess a squeeze as he did so. “Good,” he said simply.
She squeaked lightly at being squeezed before nuzzling against him in return, “I love you, Adam.”
“I love you, [my lady],” he returned softly, then tilted his head and kissed her.
Shifting slightly in his grip, she pulled herself up, gripping his shoulders in the effort to deepen the kiss. Wrapped up in his arms and embrace, in the arms of her new fiance and soon-to-be husband, the world disappeared from the mind of the muse. Love was a powerful thing. The anticipation the safety and security coupled with love was even more powerful... almost overwhelming.
For Friday she had much to do but for now? She couldn’t think of it.
Summary: Adam put Shiri on a scavenger hunt that eventually led her straight back home and directly into a question that she hadn’t expected but probably should have.
