When all the mas and the pas tell 'em please to go away
Characters: Fury, Red, Namor
Setting: This oil rig out in the ocean somewhere
Content: Nick Fury
Summary: Nick and Betty are on a mission which is rudely interrupted by Aquaman Namor
There was just something so comforting about having a Hulk for backup (except those times when you were afraid that Hulk might rip you in half like a phone book. But Nick wasn't all that worried on that front). Even the mindless hordes of HYDRA thought twice about attacking when they saw a hulk in full rage mode running at them. It brought Fury a perverse satisfaction seeing Red at work and that was why he'd taken to bringing her on the missions he oversaw himself. Betty was a genius in the S.H.I.E.L.D. labs, but Red She-Hulk was a beast in the field. Nick hated to go to the well too much and burn out his 'scientist', but he kinda figured Red was as into punching people out as he was into shooting them. So he invited her along on this late night mission to an oil rig out in the Gulf of Mexico where some HYDRA fuckheads had taken the crew and some visiting senators hostage. A couple of those senators were S.H.I.E.L.D. advocates and the company pumped a lot of money into government coffers. They were threatening to blow the whole thing up which meant killing the senators, losing the revenue, and poisoning the ocean. All of that would be a bullshit mess Nick didn't want to clean up after.
"Sir-" a voice sounded in his earpiece as their plane entered the airspace around the rig site. It was the pilot and he sounded disturbed, so Nick joined him at the front of the plane and cussed under his breath at what he saw in the darkness below. A burning trail of light, stretching out into the ocean on a slick of spilled oil and a mighty fire raging up on one of the higher platforms. Either they'd already tipped their first hand and blown one, or this was an accident. Either way, Fury and his strike team had a helluva mission on their hands. He instructed that the pilot take them to the opposite side of the rig, away from the fire in the sea, and he lined up his men to make the jump onto the target and in the water nearby. Red was the last to go and he clapped her on the shoulder and, once she'd disappeared into the darkness, he made the jump himself. He tossed down a homing device and his parachute guided him down to the highest level where he landed in a roll and was back on his feet, already firing his weapon before the first "Hail HYDRA!"
