What if this storm ends?
Characters: Nick and Jess
Setting: Jess' apartment
Content: Nick Fury
Summary: It's high time these two had a talk about stuff and things
There was a reason Nick Fury didn't have much of a personal life (the prostitutes didn't count; that was about as impersonal as you could get). No matter how good it seemed to be going it always, somewhere down the line, got completely fucked up. Friends, family, his kids (actual and otherwise), lovers- it all just broke down in the end, every damned time. People he'd trusted betrayed him, people who trusted him were disappointed, people he loved ended up hating him. He wasn't mad about it. You couldn't please everybody all the time. Dealing in lies and deceit professionally, it was only natural that everything else was going to suffer for it. Particularly anything in the romance department. Hell, he hadn't had a woman in his life lately who hadn't at least wanted, or tried to, kill him (even his ex-wife, he figured, fit into one of those categories).
Nick knew he had a type which was, apparently, dangerous and beautiful brunettes with ties to HYDRA. Given Jessica's history he shouldn't have been surprised to learn that she'd fallen under HYDRA's control again, yet somehow he was. He felt a little betrayed, too, and worse than that- he felt guilt. For leaving her without an explanation, for not realizing she was being mind controlled, for being so close all that time and failing to reach out. If he felt this way he couldn't even begin to imagine what she must be going through. He had questions, she probably did, too. They both deserved answers.
It was this and that guilty conscience that had him making his way into her building in disguise. Outside her door he paused and debated knocking, second guessing himself. If he could just stop making friends and stick with hookers, he wouldn't be in this situation. He wondered if he was making the right choice in confronting her; they'd been done a long time, he was still supposed to be in hiding, and he didn't know if the damage here was irreparable. Nick thought he'd loved her, probably still did. That should have been enough. Fury turned off his image inducer, lifted his hand, and knocked.
