I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines.
Characters: Come all ye Dark New Avengers. Some of you, all of you, I don't mind either way.
Setting: An AIM lair under an NYC warehouse.
Content: Violence
Summary: Rumor has it MODOK's got the Tesseract. Rumor's wrong, he totally doesn't. But that's what we're here to find out, and also kick some stupid yellow suited AIM goons' asses because why not?
In Fury's humble opinion, Justin Hammer was one of the worst candidates in the world for the possession of an object of obscene and ungodly power. Others to make that list included Doom, Von Strucker, and MODOK. Nick wasn't sure which of them was actually the worst. That was kind of a philosophical question. What he was sure of, presented with a choice of who would do the least damage with something like that, he was going with the lesser of two evils which, in this actual case, meant Hammer. Or more precisely, Hammer's S.H.I.E.L.D. Meanwhile, it was MODOK who supposedly had possession of the cosmic magical bullshit Tesseract with its unimaginable fucking power, and the Dark Avengers had been tasked with trying to achieve it. Under other circumstances, Nick might have tried to find a way to sabotage the operation, let the thing stay out of Hammer's hands, but this was AIM and MODOK. At least Hammer pretended not to be an asshole in public.
As long as Nick could keep track of the thing, try to ensure it stayed with S.H.I.E.L.D. rather than Hammer himself, then he'd feel a whole lot better about having to track down and fetch the thing. Right now, though, he was hoping their intel was wrong and that AIM didn't have it. Worst case scenario to Nick's mind was that they did have it and one of the other New Avengers got their paws on it first and spirited it off to Hammer before Nick could figure out what happened to it. Best case, MODOK didn't have it and they could wreck shop in a major terrorist stronghold. It had taken weeks of intel to be sure that the derelict warehouse on the docks concealed MODOK's latest sophisticated headquarters beneath it, but now they knew and the team had been given the go ahead to raid it to find the Tesseract. And, of course, to protect the American people from the scourge of AIM.
So here they were, a lot of the team, crammed into a covert ops helicopter and heading towards the warehouse district. Nick was surprised the sheer weight of all the egos in the chopper didn't bring the damned thing down. He was going to do his best to take point on this one, but not everyone involved was known for taking orders. Fuck 'em all, he didn't give a shit if nobody wanted to listen to him, so long as things worked out in his favor. As the blades above them slowed to a stop in the murky dawn air and the chopper touched down on the warehouse roof, USAgent sat forward in his seat with a private little smile. Nick was feeling lucky to his bones this morning. They weren't gonna find that thing here.
