Never let the Devil beguile you-
Characters: Nick Fury, multi-threads: The Caterpillars, Coulson, Noriko, Tony, Natasha, anyone else who wants to see him
Setting: Various places around the city
Content: Nick Fury
Summary: Time to say goodbye.
In his lifetime Nick Fury had dodged a lot of bullets, literally and figuratively. He'd faced this particular bullet- accountability- before and only just survived it. This time he didn't figure he'd be so lucky. Everyone always wanted to toss around the blame when things weren't going their way and Fury had always known that eventually he'd have to take it. This was it, that thing he'd been dreading for months that Alex predicted and that had Nick more paranoid than usual. At least he expected it, had a vague idea what was coming. Fury was prepared. When shit hit the fan he was more than ready to get the hell out of dodge.
Shit was coming on fast- they told him Friday morning that on Monday his trial would begin. Trial, court martial, three ring media circus; whatever they wanted to call it Nick knew it was a farce and that this was it. This was the end of Fury, at least at S.H.I.E.L.D. He'd been through this before and was only saved by the skin of his teeth thanks to Stark's intervention. That had been lucky, but Fury's luck had run out this time, he was sure of that. For all his contingency plans there was one thing left, maybe the hardest thing, saying his goodbyes. He wasn't going into prison; anyone who believed that could go fuck themselves. It just wasn't an option. Obviously he'd have to go underground but he couldn't let whoever took over, whatever S.H.I.E.L.D. became, to get his Secret Warriors and he couldn't just leave the people who'd depended on him completely in the dark. Fury still needed a network, he still needed allies.
