The System Is Down
Who: Riffraff – OPEN
When: Mid-morning
Where: Initially the hospital area. Then into hallways.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
The monitor was just plugging away, making sure Riffraff’s heart was beating. After being unconscious for four days, the doctors had been pretty sure she wasn’t going to wake up. Another one for the life flight. Except that it was never coming and now all the medical staff was missing. Riff’s eyes were moving rapidly under her eyelids. Then suddenly her eyes flew open and seemed to gasp in a raspy breath.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Riff sat up slowly, carefully. Nothing was broken and she couldn’t quite remember what happened immediately. Slowly though – slowly the image came to her. The ship was rocking wildly back and forth. Her machines were flying around her room. Some were ‘shouting’ in distress. Crashes. Smashes. Walter had flown off her desk and across the room and smacked her in the back of the head. The animatronic head had then crumbled on to the ground, speech garbled and places sparking until eventually his battery ran down... Eventually, Riffraff had been found during room checks.
Beep. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
She’d removed all the sensors like that. The only thing she couldn’t remove by ripping it out was the IV. Fuck. No one was coming yet. She swung herself out of bed, moving entirely on adrenaline. Shuffling through a drawer near by, she found some surgical tape, a cotton ball and some gauze. Getting those ready and in place, she carefully removed the IV and pressed the cotton ball down. Gauze next then tape. She bent her arm, making some pressure so she didn’t bleed out or some shit. Good. Done.
Still no one. After getting dressed very quickly and haphazardly (her pants were on backwards and the straps of her shirt were under her arms instead of over), she ran. Ran like all fuck or at least as much as she could. She was dizzy and felt awful and was hungry. But she was scared. This didn’t seem like a promising episode of The Bionic Woman and she didn’t feel like she had cybernetic implants so there was no reason to stay. Riff bounced off a wall in the hallway once she left the medical area and half-dashed, half-stumbled down the walkway having no clue where she was going.
Finding an elevator, she slammed both the up and down buttons like that would help speed things along, meaning to go to straight to work. She had no clue what was going on but she “knew” that it was January 1st and she needed to get back to work. She stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for her work floor... Then slumped against the wall and slowly sank down onto her butt. Adrenaline was wearing off...
