Who: Hector and Leto
When: Shortly after 9
Where: Exam room at the medical station
If he was dead, Leto wanted Dr. Taylor resurrected, just so she could kill him all over again. His notes were burned into her memory, and once Genny had helped her get a basic grip on the situation, the first thing she had wanted to do was see Hector Treves for herself. She'd been hoping against hope that Dr. Taylor had been wrong, even though she'd known that was probably ridiculous. And seeing Hector for herself confirmed it all. This was bad.
Hector had not gotten better since New Year's Eve. He was in pain, real, awful pain, and it wasn't going nowhere. He felt weak, and he wasn't keeping anything in his system. When he'd been woken up and told to come down to the medical station right away, he was hoping that he finally had an answer. Hearing the situation from this nurse was not very encouraging though. "So they're all gone." he repeated. She'd told him that much. And that Dr. Taylor had left a note about him. "But Dr. Taylor knew what was wrong with me?"
Sitting across from Hector in the exam room, Leto nodded lightly. "He did." she confirmed. "You have appendicitis." Dr. Taylor had written in his notes that they needed to have him evacuated, but with all communications down, it was impossible. And for whatever stupid reason, Dr. Taylor had sat on it, praying that things would get better, or they would be found. But things were worse. All the medical staff was gone, and Hector's fever was worse. His temperature was in the danger zone.
Hector blinked. And realized he didn't even know what an appendix did. Was supposed to do, anyway. If that was what was wrong, it felt a bit like his was on mutiny. "Appendicitis." he repeated. "Okay then. How do you treat that?"
Here was the painful part. "You need surgery." Leto said, softly. "You needed it five days ago. Dr. Taylor knew that, too. He wanted to have you evacuated." She could not believe Hector was still alive and walking around.
"...Oh." Hector realized. There was a lot not being said, but it didn't really need to be, did it? He needed surgery, and the medical staff was gone. Shit. "What happens if I don't get surgery?"
"At this point... eventually, you'll go into shock. Peritonitis will lead to sepsis. Without surgery... you'll die." Leto heard herself saying the words, and still felt dizzied by them. She was handing this man a death sentence.
Shit, did Hector feel stupid. He didn't know what peritonitis was. He knew sepsis was bad. And oh yeah, the dying thing. Hector smiled a small, soft smile, and let out a single dry chuckle. She probably thought he was crazy, but he couldn't help but feel like fate had just bitchsmacked him. He let that sink in, and finally looked up at Leto. "How soon do I need surgery?"
Leto winced slightly. "You needed it five days ago, Hector. Sometimes this gets better on its own, but your case is far too serious. I can't believe you haven't suffered severe complications by now." It was as if God had hit the pause button on his life. "If we were in a hospital they would do it right away."
"What does the surgery involve?" Hector asked. He felt and looked very calm for someone who'd just been told he was gonna die. Soon. Hector had basically slept the past five days, but he knew that it had been five days, and they were still lost. He couldn't count on them being rescued in time.
"An appendectomy tends to be a pretty simple surgery these days." Leto answered. "When I worked in trauma I was in the room for quite a few of them."
Hector tilted his head to the side. "So you know how to do it?" he asked. Maybe his luck hadn't run out yet.
Leto stared at him. Oh hell. "...I'm a nurse." she said. "The highlight of my involvement was holding out a pair of clamps. I've seen them done, I've never done it myself."
Hector smiled a bit at her as another wave of nausea hit. He was not going to puke in front of the girl. "First time for everything." he said. "I'm gonna die either way, yeah?" he shrugged, and met her eyes again. "Do you know how to do it? In theory."
Leto kept on staring. He was serious. Had he lost his mind? Was he delirious? Ohhh, Leto was feeling panicked again. But she sat still and kept her eyes on his as she gave a slow nod. "In theory." To prove this to herself, she ran it over in her head. Prepare the abdomen. The incision is made over McBurney's point and the umbilicus. Open the layers of the abdominal wall, slit the External Oblique Aponeurosis along its fiber, split the internal oblique muscle along its length. Enter the peritoneum, identity the appendix, mobilize, ligate, and divide at the base. Close. She'd seen it done in fifteen minutes on the simpler cases. A man Hector's size would probably take a half hour. For someone who had done it before. What are you thinking?
Hector was wondering this himself. What was he thinking? He wasn't scared, like he knew he probably should have been. Karma had been bound to catch up with him sooner or later, yeah? "Do you think you can do it?"
Leto thought long and hard on the question, running the surgery over and over again in her mind. This was possibly his only shot. Wasn't it better to try than just wait for something to happen? Did the medical station have enough antibiotics? What about general anesthesia? Oh God, oh God. But once again, slowly and surely, she nodded. "I can do this."
Hector smiled and leaned back. "Alright then. You do it." he said, nodding. "I trust you. I'd rather die fighting than sit back and wait. When can you do it?"
He trusted her? He'd just met her five minutes ago! Leto wanted to shake him by his shoulders and yell at him. What had she just agreed to? "This afternoon." she managed. "I need to... make sure we have everything we need. Come back here at noon." She needed to go through the medical books, and the drug stash, and find volunteers, and somewhere in there, time to throw up and freak out. "Don't eat or drink anything." Oh God.
Hector grinned and got off the exam table. He felt weaker than hell, but he'd manage to get back to his room okay. He still had his pride. "That won't be a problem, can't keep it down anyway. See you then."
Leto actually managed to wait until he was out of the room to flail. She called for Genny, and made a list of things she needed to find. It was going to be a long day. What the hell was she doing...
