Good boy...
Who: Megan and Niles
Where: Gaia
When: Starting just before midnight.
Right now, Megan was very much a disapproving rabbit. She'd finally gotten the goddamn medicine from the infirmary and had gone back to her room and settled in for the night, dozing off while reading. It wasn't long though before she heard whimpering from beside her and a wet nose nuzzling her hand. "What the fuck?" she asked Niles, still in that weird place between sleep and awake. "You need to go now?" Niles kept whimpering, though. She'd been taking him to the balcony to do his business, but with the weather like it was, she wasn't daring. She got up and quickly put on her shoes and a robe before harnessing him up. "Come on. Let's put some more compost in the greenhouse."
The wrongness Niles had felt kept growing and growing as the evening progressed. Even when Megan had come home, he was still very uneasy. But he had a job to do, and when Megan put his harness on, he guided her to the greenhouse. He'd liked the greenhouse before, it was almost like home. There were lots of plants and smells, and if she'd let him, he could've spent hours there happily sniffing away. But tonight, all he wanted to do was hide. But they went to the greenhouse anyways, and even the smells seemed wrong to him. He kept whimpering as Megan took the harness off.
"I know you need to go, so just hurry up and do it. Mommy needs her beauty sleep." She flipped open the cover on her braille watch. 11:59. So, how did you spend New Years? Oh, nothing much, just watched the dog take a shit.
Niles sniffed for a moment, then popped his head up sharply, ears ready, nose sniffing, eyes wide. This was wrong. Bad things were about to happen. He looked towards the wall and began barking, very loudly.
"What the fuck?! Goddamnit, I can't take you anywhere, you little-"
The floor moved under Megan's feet and she let go of Niles' leash. It was as if the ground lifted up beneath her and had sent her flying in the opposite direction. She hit something- a table?- full in the side and immediately heard a sharp crack. She was too in shock to scream. Her eyes were open wide, as if she was trying to force them to see for the first time in her twenty-one years, but they moved back and forth manically, trying to take in all the blackness at once. Before she had a chance to react, she found herself thrown again, this time into two walls. A corner. The impact knocked the wind out of her temporarily, and her first attempt to scream came out as a breathless gasp.
Things flew at her, although until they actually hit her, she had no idea they were coming. One hit her just above the left eye and she finally was able to let out a crying scream. The floor moved again, but somehow she found another wall. She managed to brace herself against the now three walls, and tried to lower herself to the ground, feeling something wet and sticky and dirty coming down her face. It tasted like copper.
One thought raced through her head as she found the ground and tried to huddle herself as tightly as possible. Looking up, she began to shout, her side aching severely, feeling the pieces of rib grinding against each other as she moved. "Niles! Niles!" she shouted, between the sobs. Whatever had happened to her, if something had happened to her sweet boy, she'd never forgive herself, especially considering what she'd been saying to him right before... whatever had happened.
For his part, Niles had broken into a run just before the room had shifted, as Megan had let go of his leash. He turned as he realized that she wasn't following him. One thought in his mind, he looked around for her, finally spotting her in the corner, lowering herself to the ground. He started running again, this time towards her. She was his Mommy. It was his job to protect her now. He dodged plants flying around and skidded back and forth on the constantly moving floor before finally reaching her.
Megan heard the familiar jingle of dog tags and reached out for Niles, catching a plant across her forearm. Luckily the plant broke instead of her. "Come here, boy," she said, barely able to speak for all the tears. Niles began licking her forehead, trying to help bring the bleeding down. Megan just held him in the tightest embrace possible. "Good boy... good boy..." Her tears ran down her face and into his yellow fur as the chaos continued around them for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually the rocking stopped, and she cried them both to sleep, hoping to forget the nightmare, her head against the wall, her loyal dog curled up in her lap.
