You Know My Name
Who: Lisa, Mason, and Open
Where: Circean Delight
When: Tuesday Morning
Lisa wandered out of Cyamites looking for a place to have breakfast. She wasn't sure where she was going, but this ship was full of places to eat, so she knew she would find someplace quickly. Her search was rewarded almost immediately when she spotted Circean Delight just astern of Cyamites. She had not been to Circean Delight yet, but she remembered from reading the pamphlets that it was supposed to be the premier eating establishment on the ship. It did look pretty fancy, and she wondered briefly whether she was underdressed in her blue jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers. She decided to try it out anyway. As it turned out, things were a little less formal for breakfast and lunch hours than they would be for supper. They even had contemporary music playing in the background, rather than the classical music she thought must prevail during the evening hours.
As with most places on the ship, the restaurant was not very crowded. Lisa did not have to wait for a table, and the hostess led her to one of the tables at the edge of the balcony, where she had a good view of the stage. No one was performing at this time of day, of course; that's what the background music was for. A new song was just starting. It sounded familiar somehow, but she didn't think it was something that got much radio play. She started to ignore it and focus on the menu, but then the singing began, and the lyrics brought her attention back to the music.
If you take a life, do you know what you'll give?
Odds are you won't like what it is.
At those words, images of the faces of two people who had been very close to her appeared in her mind unbidden. She was starting to feel a little sick.
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me
By the merciless eyes I've deceived?
She thought she recognized the song now; it was the theme song from one of those James Bond movies, the one where they introduced that blond actor as the new 007. Normally she might have liked the song, but in her current state of mind, she found the lyrics...disturbing.
I've seen angels fall from blinding heights,
But you yourself are nothing so divine;
Just next in line.
With an effort, Lisa pushed the song from her mind. She had to focus on the menu... the waiter was on his way to the table.
