Having French In-Laws
Who: Nayan and Morgan
Where: Arete Deck massage parlor
When: afternoon
What: Stress relief... we hope.
Nayan was very stressed out; which was weird, because he was supposed to be on the world’s newest and most luxurious pleasure cruise and he was on cue in the massage parlor waiting room. But he was also trying to listen to a phone message from his mother-in-law. Sacha’s mother, Mrs. Bedeau, liked to pretend that A: he was not Indian and B: that he spoke fluent French. She was allowed to persist in her delusion because in regular conversation he handled the language quite well. Conversational French, however, was not the same as deciphering meaning from a poorly recorded audio message. So because Mrs. Badeau lived in this another world where Nayan was French, he got many phone messages with literally reams and reams of rapid over enthusiastic chatter that he could not for the life of him understand.
He supposed in person, when she could clearly see he was not French, she spoke more clearly, or with less slang, or something because whatever she did on her phone recordings it was not the same language. Nayan had his cell phone cupped to his ear, gritting his teeth as he tried for the sixth time to pick apart the colloquial for some semblance of understanding. Thus far, he knew it was something to do with Sacha meeting him in Bermuda. This was incredibly frustrating. He was having trouble breathing evenly because despite several efforts to call the woman (Sacha’s was on a plane to the other end of the world, therefore, not answering her cell) Mrs. Bedeau had been ignoring his calls.
So that meant Nayan was muttering terrible things under his breathe, glowering impressively, and generally quirking the curiosity of the other people in the waiting room. So focused was he on not chucking his phone into a wall he didn’t notice any of the salon personnel as they entered.
