Joseph was trying not worry. Yes, Rhys had seemed upset, distracted and nervous. He hadn't missed those little dots that popped up and then disappeared with no message. But Rhys was like that and he had been very worried about the meeting.
He would hope after both Mab and himself jumping down Amadeus' throat, the sheriff would handle his ward a little more gently. Amadeus was a good sheriff and had been a very effective Marquess. But he was about as gentle an icepick in one's skull. While he clearly had sympathy for Rhys by deign of even agreeing to be his guardian, the scant education he'd offered was wholly inadequate. But by taking that responsibility, it meant he couldn't just will the boy to be the fledging he wanted not the one he'd gotten.
There were likely other things as well. Joseph had told a few of the dolls to be ready if they needed a good stiff drink. Luckily, the afterparty was still underway and would be for hours, so finding an intoxicated blood doll to take the edge off wouldn't be difficult.
Still Joseph paced and fussed with his hair and clothes. He was still wearing the clothing he had for entertaining Ash and Rook, although the vest was unbuttoned and his sleeves rolled up. When the doors to the lift from the carport below the building opened, he crossed to it immediately.
Bruno stepped aside so Rhys could exit the elevator. Joseph moved to greet him with a hug, but noted his body language and expression. Something was very, very wrong. "That bad, love?" he murmured sympathetically. "I'm sorry." They might need more than one drunk blood doll to get through this.
