day two | rest week
So some of you woke up with an extra body in the room this week? Mind if I take a look?

Anyway, Rick and I stole a bunch of shit from the weird ass park last week, so if anyone wants a temporary back up body in case of death*, let me know. They're going to take a bit to set up and we need to find a place to store them when not in use.

Also, anyone that wants to see how this works in case Rick or I disappear is welcome to.

[CARVER]

I assume you're your vampire self again?

(*OOC: it's 2 AC for a back up host body unless you won one for free in the roll this week. These may become more important when we settle into a semi-permanent setting without resetting if you ever choose to risk death for your character.)

I wish to assist.

Good. You can help me when we set up the first host: mine.

By ‘set up’ am I to assume you mean that you intend to activate it completely?

Yep. Activate it, wake up in the host body while mine remains unconscious, then transfer back and let it stay dormant until needed.

Have you performed a mind transfer before?

Eliot and Margo have. It's their spell. But they used a golem, a magical construct. We don't have the living clay used to construct a golem so we're using hosts with a modified pearl (housing for their AI consciousness) repurposing the living metal from the magical batteries I have.

Should their spell fail I may be able to assist.

Really? What did you have in mind?

On Vulcan we have a ritual that allows for the transfer of an individual’s katra, or living essence, into another. This can also be performed after the person has passed if the katra has been preserved. Although I cannot think of an incident where a katra was transferred to a nonliving entity, it may be possible. Should the spell fail, I could attempt to try this method instead.

Katra? Is that like a soul or something?

Yes. ‘Soul’ would be synonymous.

The word ‘soul’ has religious connotations in most languages. That is why we prefer ‘katra’.

Does it really just mean "Who you are as a person: personality, memories"?

We describe it as the living essence of the mind. But yes, the katra consists of an individual’s memories, experiences, and emotions.

No. That is illogical.

Your people are psychics?

Psychic is not exactly the appropriate term. But we have many rituals that, when performed properly, can create a kind of telepathic fusion between two individuals.

Is something like that permanent? How do you keep your sense of self?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

It is rarely a permanent bond. Normally it is for a temporary exchange of information or to hold a katra until it is returned to the family. Vulcans begin training their minds at a very young age. Using meditation and logic we are quite capable at compartmentalizing.

You can literally hold a soul, create a temporary psychic bond, but never refer to such abilities as magic or magical in nature.

I just find that fascinating.

Because it is not considered magic in my society. It may appear that way to other civilizations, but for us it is a natural development of scientific and spiritual study that has occurred over thousands of years.

Nevertheless, yes. It is fascinating. As all scientific endeavors are.

Is scientific inquiry part of your culture's spirituality?

And if these questions aren't okay, let me know. I'm curious but I don't actually want to be rude.

I do not consider inquisitive queries to be rude. And as a Vulcan you are incapable of hurting my feelings with your questions.

Our entire philosophy is based on logic. While we still maintain some customs correlating to ancient beliefs, logic is the mainstay of our entire culture and society. As such, scientific study has become a rational focus of our existence. While we still celebrate the arts, most Vulcans pursue careers in the sciences because it furthers our intellectual curiosity.
