THE LONELY CITY - DAY 1
Steven's gone, I think I'm cured. He's been a part of my life since I was a kid, it's weird not having him around. My thoughts are quiet.

Khonshu's gone, too. And I have some sort of administrative job at City Hall. I finally have a regular life.

Sorry to hear that. Not the amazing part, because so far from what I've seen you are, particularly as Mayor. I mean about the shit.

Nobody deserved that. Especially as kids.

I ruled a kingdom where I'm from. First, it was given to Eliot and he made me High Queen. And I found I was really fucking good at it. Listening to what was going on in the kingdom, figuring out ways to help and fix things. The diplomatic shit sucked, I left that for Eliot, but the rest of it... Hell, I liked it. Then after getting deposed, Eliot ran for High King against the asshole who got us deposed, and I won with write-ins. I felt like I fucking earned it.

There's a reason I keep people at arm's length so don't take it personally. Or do. It just proves that I was right to hit first.

That's pretty amazing. Running a kingdom? That's pretty bad ass. I have trouble balancing my checkbook. That's great you've found something you're good at and you enjoy. Excuse my ignorance, but you were elected King? Isn't that usually a birthright sort of deal?

I don't blame you one bit.

It's usually a Children of Earth bullshit thing, and Fillorians hated it. Rightfully, if you ask me. Outsiders ruling your kingdom? What the fuck. The Pickwicks usually take care of shit between Children of Earth rulers, and that's who deposed us. They promised an election — Tick Pickwick and Eliot ran against one another. Imagine everyone's especially mine surprise when the talking animals were the deciding vote.

So Steven's the one who got to live the unknowing life, huh? I'd say it must be nice, but ignorance isn't bliss. It's just ignorance.

And here I thought dealing with a pantheon of Egyptian gods was complicated. So, this kingdom you were ruling... Fillory... the way I'm interpreting it is a sort of Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe situation, Daughters of Eve and Sons of Adam, is that more or less right? What qualified you and Eliot to rule in the first place? Oh, and as a side, Tick Pickwick? Horrible name.

In my case, ignorance is disassociation, which is a little more complicated. [...} Steven knows what happened, he got to see as part of this whole afterlife sort of deal where we needed to balance our hearts on a scale.

Fillory and Further in our world, but yeah, similar sort of theme. The books are super not what it's really like there. You're going to love this: a magic knife would cut who should be High King. Knife chose Eliot. Everyone else was chosen by Eliot. But really, all of that was fairytale bullshit that Ember and Umber came up with ages ago. Ember and Umber were the gods who created Fillory.

In a version of purgatory?

So, they go around slicing everybody to see who bleeds? Or what? The knife comes to life and attacks the qualified person when it comes into its presence.

Ember and Umber. Steven would be excited to know more about them. When he shows up again, try to remember to bring it up.

Speaking of which, Steven would know much more details about the Duat, but I guess basically yes? It was sort of like the way to the Egyptian afterlife, which they called the Field of Reeds. You're sailing on a ship across sand, and if your heart doesn't balance then you go overboard and become part of the sand. [...] I really miss Steven

Not a lot of Children of Earth go to Fillory, so when they do, Fillorians end up finding them and going through that particular ritual. It changes.

Yeah, I used to be really into Egyptology as a kid. I think everyone goes through that phase. Some grow out of it, some down. Most of the gods we've dealt with are Greek pantheon, or fairly random.
