“What are you getting us into?”
After the chaos of the past few weeks with being royalty and having no memories, Darcy was thrilled when she woke up and discovered they were at Disney this week. Hopefully they would actually get to have a chill week and they wouldn’t have to deal with an alien invasion or something else insane. This could be a nice break, like Planet Vegas, if the powers that be were actually being kind to them. She had hopes that their new rooms were a positive sign that this week would be calmer.

She’d texted Tony and they decided to head out together for at least a few hours. Wearing a casual dress she’d picked up back on Vegas with her hair pulled back in a ponytail, Darcy headed for the dorm lobby to meet her husband. Idly, she rubbed her thumb over her wedding ring. It was weird that she had really started to think of him that way, especially after last week and their assumption that they had a normal marriage, or at least something a lot closer to it than accurate, when they didn’t have their memories.

Maybe they should actually have a conversation about their relationship one of these days and figure out what they wanted it to be.

For someone who balanced work and play to the degree that Tony had for the past few years, suddenly having an abundance of free time had really been doing a number on him. And it was a balancing act. For as much as Tony loved to give off the impression that he was unburdened by the weight of responsibility on his shoulders—first as the CEO of Stark Industries following his return from Afghanistan, and then as Iron Man—it was what kept him up at night. It was what pushed him to drive his body to the breaking point and collect more blood on his hands even while he tried to wash them clean.

Derleth could have been an escape from all that, and in some ways, it had been. But it had also caused him to confront the worst parts of himself and decide if that was who he wanted to be. Word of his future seemed to suggest that he was capable in ways he could not give himself credit for now. But it was something that he needed: it was hope.

Tony woke up in the new week as he always did, as a dying man in a suit of armor. He freed himself, showered, and flipped through one of his father’s old notebooks while he sipped a cup of the Centaur’s draught. The emotional side-effects of the potion did not have the same gut-punching effect as they had the first time, but he still could not quite place what he was feeling. It was a small price to pay for the disappearance of his fatigue and headache, the bruise under his eye, and the black veins that crept up his neck and chest.

He met Darcy in the lobby, looking more relaxed than usual in a pair of jeans and his Chairman Rose t-shirt. He had also put on his wedding ring. No longer hidden away in an envelope marked “Do Not Lose,” it had been sitting on his nightstand next to his phone when he awoke, as if it were meant to be worn. He had put it on without thinking.

When she saw him coming, he flashed her a smile. If it looked brighter than usual, it was only because of the effects of the healing potion—he felt better than he had in years. He slipped an arm around Darcy’s waist, and they were off. “What are the chances the animatronics go haywire and try to kill us?”

The casual arm around her waist felt right and Darcy grinned as they headed off campus. She was generally an optimistic person so she was trying to focus on that right now, though she laughed at Tony’s question.

“Let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised,” she said. After being here for two months and experiencing a lot of weirdness, nothing would really surprise her where Derleth was concerned. Of course, she’d also seen plenty of weirdness back home as well, so it took a lot to phase her these days and she would be on alert for anything that might be a danger even as they played happy tourist.

Darcy wondered if they’d be able to swing a way to stay in one of the resorts associated with the park when she had a sudden thought. “Ooh, we should tell them we’re honeymooning,” she said. “I bet we’d get a bunch of free stuff.”

It had surprised Tony when he so often found himself in Darcy’s company in the days following their drunken nuptials. But for a self-reliant person, he was rarely alone. Whether it was Pepper or Happy or strangers at a house party he brought home for the night, there was usually someone in his orbit, even if it was just his own AI. He had pushed everyone away in the end, but then he had found himself in Derleth. And after some stumbling, he began piecing together a new version of normal with a new sphere of influence. One that included Darcy Lewis.

“I like the way you think.” Maybe that sort of thing needed to be booked in advance, but Tony was confident in their ability to talk their way into any situation. “So who are we this week? Tony and Darcy? Or Mr. and Mrs. Wilson from Milwaukee?” His voice took on the nasally intonation of the Great Lakes region.

“Not that accent, for sure,” Darcy said, wrinkling her nose when he spoke. “We could be Tony and Darcy Wilson from Milwaukee though.” It might be fun to play pretend a little. “You should grab your ring before we leave campus. Help sell the bit.”

She knew he didn’t usually wear it and it didn’t bother her. They hardly had a conventional marriage and she wasn’t entirely sure why she wore hers most of the time. Maybe because she didn’t want to risk losing it. The only time she didn’t have it on was in the lab, though they did spend a lot of time there. And, of course, she was always careful to take it off and put it on her nightstand before the reset so it didn’t disappear.

This could be a lot of fun if it worked out.

Tony held up his hand to show that he was already wearing the ring. “Are we sold on Tony and Darcy? What about, I dunno, Paul and Olivia?” After days of not knowing who they were, a week of feigning royalty, and spending the one before that in different bodies, pretending to be someone else seemed on brand for the way things had been going.

Darcy was a little surprised that he was wearing it though she didn’t question why, at least not for the moment. “Hmmm,” she considered his question. “I kind of like knowing my own name and getting to be myself. Or at least sort of myself.” Of course, thanks to his armor, they’d been ahead of most of the Derleth residents the previous week and at least had their names. “Besides, are personalized Mickey ears still a thing?” she asked. “Or is it just the sparkly mouse ear headbands now?” Either way, she wanted them and was also making him get one. Ooh, maybe they had bride and groom ones. Those would be fun.

It was Tony’s turn to look unconvinced. “Ears?” he asked with a very furrowed brow. They had only been outside for a few minutes, but already the sweltering Florida sun and humidity was making itself known. It wasn’t even noon yet. “I’d settle for a hat.” He pulled out the sunglasses he had hanging from the neck of his t-shirt and slid them on.

“So, Darcy and Tony it is. Have you ever done Disney World before?”

The Florida heat did suck, but Darcy wasn’t going to complain since they were hopefully getting a relaxing week for a change. If the heat was the worst thing they had to deal with, it would be just fine. “Okay, we’ll see what they have available,” she said.

“Yeah, but it’s been a long time,” she added. “Where should we start?”

Tony had not had a theme park with the family kind of childhood. When he wasn’t away at boarding school, he was an angry kid with an absent father and a nanny he tried to skirt at every turn. When he’d gotten a little bit older, his mind was more focused on skirts of another kind. Needless to say, he had never been to Disney World.

“My old man had a thing about Future World. Always moaned about how Disney was riffing off his City of the Future idea, making a joke out of it. I say we start there.” Nothing said Happiest Place on Earth like sticking it to your dead father a little.

“Sure, sounds good to me,” Darcy said. She figured they had an entire week so they’d be able to hit all the parks eventually. It occurred to her that they were basically making plans to spend the entire week together and she wondered if that was weird. Sure, they were married, but it was a drunk Space Vegas wedding. Still, she enjoyed his company.

As they found the right bus to take them to Epcot, she glanced around at some of the ads at the bus stop and her eyes got wide before she hit Tony’s shoulder. “Oooh, okay, better idea,” she said, gesturing at an ad that talked about having your wedding at a Disney park. “We didn’t have a reception. It could be fun.”

Tony smirked at the idea. “Michael would be disappointed to know you think so little of his party-throwing abilities.” The fact that he had gotten drunk and stupid enough to basically suggest a Vegas wedding as a means to get a woman into bed suggested it had been a killer party. “Don’t you have to book those things years in advance?” In their own universe, he might have had the pull to make it happen, but here, he didn’t have a name or bank account to throw around.

Darcy waved off his statement. “That was pre-gaming, not a reception,” she said. If they hadn’t been so drunk and started talking about creating bingo cards, the wedding wouldn’t have happened. “But you’re probably right about the booking in advance.”

Not to mention that a Disney wedding would cost a lot more than they had access to. Unless.. “If we offered them enough money, they might be willing to work with us,” she said. “And I might have an idea on how to get that.” She pulled out her phone and got on the internet to look up a few things.

While Darcy was busy with her phone, Tony slipped his arm through hers to guide her in the direction of the shuttle they needed to board. After they were seated, he craned his neck to look at her phone. “Ok, what are you getting us into?”

“Do you have any objection to a little redistribution of wealth?” Darcy asked, keeping her voice low since the shuttle was fairly crowded. “I was googling to find an unethical billionaire whose bank account I can hack.” Of course, she wouldn’t be able to pull off that level of hacking from her phone, but if she couldn’t get access to a computer in the park somewhere, she should be able to manage it from the one they’d built in the lab after Space Vegas.

Tony lowered his head and looked at Darcy over the top of his sunglasses. “Darcy Lewis. Are you telling me you’re a hacker?” Somehow this had never come up before. Another thing they apparently had in common. In his first few weeks at Derleth, he had commandeered any computer he could get his hands on to cobble together a computer system worthy of his use. All they had to do was connect it to an outside network, and they could get to redistributing. “Who do we have?” he asked with a grin. He typically only ever put his skills to use as a prank or to show off, but he wasn’t going to deprive Darcy of having her fun.

Putting on her best innocent smile, Darcy said, “Well, I have accessed SHIELD’s files back home.” He should be aware of how impressive a feat that was. “I’m thinking this guy,” she said, handing him her phone which displayed a profile for Jeff Bezos, controversial billionaire who was alleged to take advantage of his low wage workers. “He could spare a few thousand to pay for a kickass party.” And maybe a few other necessities, depending on what she managed to access.

Tony had managed to successfully dodge the SHIELD suit that had been shadowing him ever since he escaped Afghanistan. He hadn’t bothered looking into them, even after they had helped out with Stane. Still, he could imagine what a feat it had been for her to knock down their virtual door. He looked at the profile on Darcy’s phone with disgust. “Comic book supervillain. Let’s do it,” he replied without missing a beat.

Darcy grinned. “Operation Kickass Reception and Honeymoon is a Go,” she said. “We’ll do Epcot today and then tomorrow, once I know how much money I’m working with, I’ll meet with an event planner and hopefully it’ll be enough to get a rush job.” She might not have the Stark fortune, but she was well aware that if you had enough money, you could pretty much get whatever you wanted and she had no problem exploiting that for their gain in this particular situation.

It occurred to Tony how insane this was. Not the hacking an evil billionaire’s bank account thing, but planning wedding celebrations with a spouse he had acquired during a night of excess. Neither one of them seemed to be under the assumption that they were an item, and yet they continued to spend time together, in and out of the bedroom. This was rare for Tony, who wasn’t adverse to sleeping with someone without even learning their name. Of course, sexual conquests were no longer one of his active pursuits since becoming Iron Man. He had a score to settle. Affairs to set in order. But here in Derleth? Tony enjoyed Darcy’s company, and with her welcoming him into her bed, it made sense that he didn’t need to look elsewhere.

Still…

He ran his finger over the wedding band he had put on that morning. What was he doing?

“This is where the groom just takes a backseat and lets the bride do all the driving, right?” Is that what he had done for his wedding to Pepper? She would absolutely have done all the work and then just told him when and where to be. He was still trying to wrap his head around being Mr. Pepper Potts some time in the future. Sure, there had been that moment at the charity thing, but then that’s all it had been. A moment. How many more were needed for them to become a them? How much graveling would he need to do after the stunt he pulled at his birthday party?

“Sure, if you want,” Darcy said. “Got any special requests?”

Maybe it was ridiculous to be doing this. Getting drunk married by Space Elvis was one thing, actually throwing a wedding reception was another. Then again, everything about their lives in Derleth was ridiculous, so Darcy figured there was no reason not to lean into it and just embrace the insanity. Tony was fun and she’d never had a chance to meet him back home. She still had the occasional twinge of guilt over the fact that she knew his potential future, but since he didn’t seem concerned about it, she tried not to dwell.

They’d never really talked about their relationship, such as it was, though they seemed to gravitate towards each other. Of course, they’d been friends before their space wedding, so that made sense, right?

“Whatever the lady desires.” That was the correct answer, right? “Hey, do you think we could put a little extra cash aside and do some shopping of our own? My computer setup could use an overhaul, now that we’re back in the real world.” While he had no complaints about their medicinal magic, Fillory hadn’t had a whole lot to offer on the tech front.

With a shrug, Darcy said, “I don’t see why not. There might even be some tech here you’re not familiar with.” Best as they could tell, it was 2021 and she knew that was a good decade ahead of him. Plus, this was presumably a different universe from theirs.

She grinned as the bus arrived at Epcot. “Ready to experience the future?” she asked.

The future. It was a lot more inviting now that Tony knew he had one. “There’s no time like the present,” he quipped. But at the moment, he meant it.
