Big Man, Walking in the Park...
Who: Cypher OT: Magneto, Scorpion
Where: Central Park, New York, NY
When: Early to Mid-Afternoon
What: Cypher seeks help

He hadn't been able to get much information about the man once known as Magneto, save that he'd been forcibly cured and spent much of his time since then in Central Park playing chess. But all that happened years ago. Doug had no idea if the man was still there, if he had died in the two years he'd -

But best not to think of that now. Doug could deal with his first choice being dead if it came to that when it came to that. For now, he just had to hope that Magneto - Erik Magnus Lehnsherr as the various news reports had outed following the Alcatraz incident - was still alive and still playing chess in the park... and also no longer effected by the cure. It was wearing off all over - everyone was keyed up about it. But the man known as Magento was also really old, what if it didn't wear off of him due to age?

Doug took a deep breath and pulled his hood further down over his head. Those were all things that could wait to be found out. He could goad the man into acting out to see if his powers were back - assuming he was there and still into playing chess and not dead.

Another deep breath and Doug pushed off with a foot to start his skateboard down the cement path that would bring him closest to the chess tables. The cold was biting, but at least he had clothes that could deal with it however mixed the results. Brown, dried grass and leafless trees all covered with snow that was melted in only patches here and there flanked the sidewalk which was surprisingly well occupied for all that it was the middle of winter. New York never sleeped and never stopped coming to the only bright bit of greenery left in the city.

He rolled his way down the path, taking it slower as he came to the concrete tables and the groups of men sitting there, playing their games. Only a few of the tables were occupied - and only one had a single man at it. Doug wasn't honestly sure which man it was... he'd seen the picture of the guy, but that, again was about seven years old. Would he have changed much since then.

The young man rolled slowly past the tables, eying the faces in a noticeable manner, obviously looking for someone. To those who were familiar with fear, they'd see it in the shadows of his hood and the hunch of his shoulders.

Max was indeed once again playing chess in the park, this time against a young lady with an obscene vocabulary and dark green hair.

"Check." he told her, moving his knight into position, to be greeted with a tirade of profanity that wouldn't be out-of-place coming from a Bronx cabbie. "And now I believe it is lunchtime." he said, reaching into his inside suit jacket pocket and peeling a few bills off of a very nice roll of bills. "I'll take a Reuben from that wonderful deli you found the other day, and you can get whatever suits your palate the best." he told her, then waited for her to trot off to the dulcet tones of obnoxious-but-friendly profanity.

"Well fuck," Carmilla said, "I'm never going to win, god damnit. But you have to love a guy who gives a self-proclaimed thief a wad of cash." Of course, she always came back with what he wanted and the change. There was a short list of people Carmilla wouldn't even consider stealing from, and this man topped it.

"But whatever, I'll be back with your damned sandwich and then I'll fucking beat you," Cammie said. It wasn't like the Deli was very far out of the way. And it was one of the few places that didn't raise an eyebrow when she filled a kid's cup with water and wasabi. So it was a double bonus.

The girl with green hair caught his attention, but it was after she stood up that he got a good look at the man she was with. The lines on the face were heavier, perhaps a little more shallow and aged than the rather vibrant old man Magneto had been just a few short years ago - but there was little doubt as to who it was.

Doug rolled his skateboard further down the sidewalk, only turning around as the woman moved off and left his target alone. Gulping and licking his chapped lips, he took another deep breath and kicked his skateboard back toward the table.

He stopped just opposite the old man, hands digging deep into his pockets, his feet rocking his body on the board as his eyes flicked over the board before letting them move up. To the man's face. To Magneto's eyes. Was he still Magneto?

"Hey." A pause before adding "Old man." in an attempt to get his attention.

Max looked over at the brash young man. "Excuse me?" he said in rich tones, his voice a commanding one. But he blinked as the boy was carrying a great deal of passive E-M emitting devices ... all up and down his arm.

Fascinating.

Doug had the decency to blush slightly and look away as if completely chastised at the response. He gulped again and took a shuttering breath as he tried to find his spine and meet the gaze that was being leveled at him. It wasn't very easy. The old man was very intimidating for all that he was sitting down... and old.

"Heard a rumor," he finally managed, though it came out a bit more high pitched than he had wanted. "About you. Wanted to see if it was true."

"And who, pray tell, do you believe that I am?" he asked. Whatever tech the boy was carrying, it was like nothing he'd ever seen before.

"Have you considered that you may have mistaken me for someone else?" he asked.

He hopped off his skateboard and kicked it up into his left hand with a practiced motion. He stepped closer, taking the empty seat opposite the old man. Magneto's body language was one of confidence laced with genuine interest in conversation - so far.

"I could have you mistaken for someone else," Doug acknowledged, looking at the board as he mumbled on, "And I hope I don't. That'd be really embarrassing. I heard a rumor though... that you escaped to Alcatraz... on a flying bridge..."

He licked his lips and looked up at Max's eyes again.

"Is that what you heard?" he said with a certain degree of warm humor laced with a tiny bit of scorn. "Do I look like the sort of person who could ... escape to Alcatraz on a flying _bridge_?" he said.

"I do remember hearing about that little incident, though." he said, taking on a pondering air. "Mmm. Yes. Indeed." he mused. "Sit down, boy." he said, gesturing to the chair - which may have scampered just a tiny bit like a puppy to an easier angle for Doug to sit down.

It didn't take long to take the trip deli and back. Carmilla was sipping on what amounted to liquid wasabi. Her boss' lunch was in the bag she was carrying in her normal hand. Keep food away from poison, this was rule number one.

She wasn't expecting someone else to be there, "Hey, what the fuck is this?" she asked, swearing casually.

The chair moving - it couldn't have been his imagination - to let him sit easier made Doug's heart beat ten times faster in his chest. Excitement and trepidation mixing in him as he sat down and tucked his skateboard onto his lap, obeying and accepting the invitation.

His head turned at Carmilla's reappearance and he frowned, shoulders hunching in displeasure at her casual curing - taking it as some sort of accusation against him.

"None of your fucking business," Doug returned.

"Children." Max said reproachfully. "This young lady here with my lunch is Miss Black." he said, making the introduction. "She enjoys playing chess and exercising her command of English profanity." he said with mild amusement.

"Which, I have to point out is fucking perfect," Carmilla said, handing over the lunch, taking a stance that would be easy to change into punching the kid's face in if he tried anything. Judging from how thing he was, she wouldn't even have to let loose with the toxins.

"My command of English, anyway. And who you are is kinda my damn business," she said to Doug.

Doug could tell the woman was ready to hit him, kill him even, in defense of the old man. And he could also see the old man was enjoying the exchange more than he was upset at the content of the words used.

The young man shifted in the chair, moving himself to a better position to duck and roll should 'Miss Black' decide to wail on him. He ignored her last statement in lieu of muttering under his breath, "Your command of any language is as shitty as your hair."

Then he switched to German - the files had said he was from Germany - speaking directly to Max and hoping the woman couldn't understand them, "[german]I came to see you. I need to know, are you Magneto?[/german]"

Max blinked at that. "That name is dangerous, boy." he said in his Berlinische German. "Do not speak it, even in jest." he continued in the same language before switching back to English. "It would appear that we do have something in common, Mister ... Nemo" he said, keeping the wordplay going.

Nemo was, after all, Latin for "Nobody".

"What, do you mean the fish or the whale obsessed Captain?" Carmilla spoke up. "Because he looks more like the first, if you take my meaning."

"Non sum nemo! Non sum nullis! Non sum nihil!" He bit back at Max in anger. He wasn't 'nobody', he wasn't a 'no one', he wasn't nothing! He was a person and he wasn't going to be treated like some object. Not anymore.

"I came here to... to... I was looking for help from someone I thought would understand! Would know what it's like to be... to have them..." He stood, glaring at the ground, no longer sure what to do - leave or stay or where to go in either case.

"And the only whale around here is you, if you take my meaning," Doug turned and parroted angrily back at Carmilla.

"Ease down." Max said, frowning. "Of course you have your own identity." he said, starting to draw some conclusions. "You have, so far, neglected to tell us what your name is." he pointed out. "Rather than just continue to ignore this oversight, I took an opportunity to indulge in some wordplay."

His anger peaked and fizzled and the embarrassment was back. He hadn't meant to overlook that, he had just wanted to make sure this was Magneto first.

"I'm sorry... I didn't know if I had the right person, is all. I... it's hard to trust anyone right now... My name is Doug. Doug Ramsey."

He hugged his skateboard to his chest and started praying under his breath that he hadn't just walked into a trap and these two were a couple of very, very undercover secret agents out to catch anyone trying to contact Magneto.

Doug blinked for a moment, eyelashes fluttering as he took in the body language behind that question. He understood it on deeper level than he expected most would. A real name, an identity all one's own that none other could take, could have, could be.

Quietly and with frightened but wanting-to-trust eyes staring at Magneto's, he answered, "Cypher."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Cypher." he said, extending his hand for the younger man to take if he was so inclined. "Will you be staying for lunch?" he asked politely, then reached over to unwrap the wax paper from his sandwich. "Miss Black would be willing, I'm fairly certain, to make another run to the deli."

Doug shifted his skateboard so it was only occupying one arm and reached out to tentatively shake the extended hand. His fingers curled back to his chest at the offer of lunch and while he might have declined out of politeness in another setting, any reason to get rid of the girl right now was fine by him.

"Yes, thank you. Two of whatever. I have to eat a lot," He replied and then threw in as an afterthought, "please."

Carmilla wrapped her arms around her chest, the bandaged hand a fist with dark green fingers poking through, "Yeah, I'm going to buy lunch for a kid who called me a whale," she gave Doug, well, Cypher, a look, "I can do horrible things to you just by tapping you on the shoulder, so don't you get fucking smart with me."

Carmilla swore profusely under her breath, "Fine. But he's fucking paying me back for it or I'm breaking his god damned kneecaps with a rusty tire iron," she said, pushing herself away from the table and turning to make the trek BACK towards the deli. Without even finding out what the kid wanted.

He'd have to make deal with whatever she felt like feeding him.

"You are a God among insects, young man." he said with a small smile. "Never let anyone tell you otherwise." he said, finally unwrapping his sandwich and offering half to the young man.

"Now then, I believe you have something you wished to tell me..." he said, then took a bite of his half of the sandwich.
