Who: Pete, Sam and Paige
What: Getting Paige drunk. Celebrating Paige's birthday!
When: Tues, 12/28, evening.
Where: Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Kentucky
Rating: NC-17 for graphic violence and nudity Dunno... probably PG-13?

It was funny how even the big milestone birthdays stopped feeling so big once they actually happened. It was Paige's 21st birthday, but she didn't feel much different than she had at 20. The same had happened when she'd turned 18. It was nice that people thought it was a big deal and all, but really... it wasn't. Sam and Pete were going to take her out to a bar, but she was more excited that she'd get to just hang out with them than she was that she'd get to throw back shots legally.

Not that she wasn't a little bit excited about that as well. It just wasn't the main source of excitement. Pete had come in the night before, and they'd spent most of Tuesday giving him the grand tour of the town. Generally, it wouldn't have taken very long but since it wasn't just Sam and Paige giving him the tour, it had taken hours. Lewis had to show off every spot where he'd found a lizard or snake that Momma wouldn't in a million years let him take home with him, and Maggie'd had to tell him about where all of her friends lived. Lizzie and Mel had spent the whole time trying to be as charming and witty as possible for Pete's sake, which had amused Paige to no end, and even Jeb'd had a couple of things that he thought Pete absolutely needed to see that Paige thought were completely irrelevant.

After dinner, Momma had given all three of them the obligatory lectures on how they were to behave maturely while out. When she'd switched to explaining to Sam and Pete that not everyone they'd encounter would be as gentlemanly as they were, Paige had excused herself to get ready. It had only taken her about fifteen minutes, even with Ann all but hanging off of her leg, and after passing Ann off to Joelle, she'd headed out to wait by the truck.

"You'll have to direct me to a gas station on the way back, probably. I think I'm on a quarter tank, which should be fine for the night, but I'd rather be safe than sorry." The dark forest green Jeep Grand Cherokee was several years old, but the mileage was better than many of the other gas guzzlers he'd seen around Xavier's. It was his old faithful, having made the trip from the school to home and back again more times than he could count, and had proven itself more than capable of making the trip to Kentucky and back. Thankfully, Pete was also a careful and considerate owner, making sure it got what it needed when it needed it. The partnership had worked very well so far.

Also the leg room was great.

"If there's anything in the back seat just slide it over or if you want you're welcome to put it in back. I think I have some art supplies floating around there somewhere." He was fairly sure he'd gotten everything out of the backseat, but with the traffic coming and going and people riding with him in rotation, poking through what he had stored, he wasn't sure what was left out and what wasn't. He could have sworn he'd seen one of the girls going through his sketchbook earlier that day while riding into town, but he'd been more focused on making sure he followed the truck properly without getting lost.

"You guys can play around with the radio if you want, or put a cd in. I don't know what's in there now." He climbed into the driver's seat, starting the car up and letting it sit and warm up for a minute as he shuffled around for the windshield scraper to attack the layer of frost on the windows. When he was finished, he slid back in, set the scraper aside, and tossed his snowy gloves lightly toward the back seat, purposefully in Paige's direction. "Alright, which way when we get to the road?"

Sam would have offered to help, but it wasn't like there was more than one ice scraper, so he settled in (comfortably, which was rare in anyone else's car) instead and grinned back over his shoulder at Paige.

"What music you want, Pipsqueak? Figure you can at least pick that since I snaked shotgun," he offered instead, fishing around in Pete's music collection to offer her what selection there was. The radio stations would be a complete bust, what with the hills. Not to mention that anything they did manage to tune into for more than a minute at a time would be country of the most redneck variety possible, or religious.

While she figured that out he turned back to Pete. "Left out th'drive, then in towards town for a couple miles. I'll let you know afore we need t'turn again, but it'll be another left."

"Think I'll somehow manage to squeeze in there," she replied, surveying the almost completely spotless backseat. Nodding, she decided, "It'll be tight, but I think I can do it."

"What music's he got?" Paige leaned forward, arms resting on the backs of the two seats as she watched Sam rifle through the options. She took the offered CDs and flipped through them. It was mostly classic rock, which was all very much okay with her. She was in the process of extracting an Aerosmith CD when a pair of wet gloves came sailing at her, hitting her in the face and then dropping to her lap.

"Real mature, Pete," she rolled her eyes, holding the CD out between the two front seats so that whomever felt so inclined could put it in and turn it on. "Aerosmith good with everyone?"

Pete was more than happy to keep country music off their listening list for the duration of the drive, letting them rummage around his cds while he fastened his seat belt into place and adjusted his rearview mirror.

He started the jeep up and headed out in the direction he'd been told, leaning forward to pull the current cd in the player out, offering it to Sam. "Go ahead. Would you put this one into the case when the other one is out? It's probably not a good idea to look for the one this belongs to while I'm driving."

He was glad that it hadn't snowed that evening, keep the roads clear and easy to manage for the moment. "So, have you guys been to this place we're going many times before?" He glanced in the rear view mirror to glance at Paige as he spoke again. "I'm assuming you haven't, being all underaged and everything. Unless you were naughty."

Sam plucked the cd from Pete's hand and dug around in the cases until he found the right one, then put it and all the rejects away before returning his attention to the road.

"I ain't been at all, an' she better not've been, not if she knows what's good for her," he answered, mock-threatening as he glared teasingly back over his shoulder at Paige. "Josh's the one who's heard 'bout it, an' he better not've been either." Though with him it was harder to tell, and would probably be harder to find out too. "'less he was playin' with his band, anyhow," he added.

Paige passed the cases up to Sam so he could put them all away, then sat back, not bothering to move to either of the side seats. She'd be able to see the road and both of them better from the middle, anyway. She raised an eyebrow suggestively and opened her mouth to comment on Pete's naughty remark but Sam got to it first.

"No, I ain't ever been to this particular bar." She picked up a sketchbook that had been left on the back seat and tucked it into the pocket on the passenger's side seat back. "Jay probably has, though. Boy gets out more than his big brother."

She smiled sweetly in Sam's direction, then turned to look at Pete. "I don't think the place was even open last time Sam and I were home."

It took a few seconds for Pete to realize that when Sam said "Josh" he meant "Jay", though he'd heard the winged teenager called both over the past day or so. Part of him hoped Jay had a gig in the next few days so he could actually see the band in action.

"It wasn't open as in....it was closed for some reason, or it just hadn't moved in yet?" He wondered if bars actually closed, as most of them seemed to double as pubs and restaurants. If they served breakfast that pretty much covered the whole day, didn't it? Did that mean one could, in theory, spend several days in a row just hanging out at the bar without leaving and be perfectly fine? Was probably expensive as heck though. "You know, I think this is only going to be the third bar I've every been to. I mean, we go to Harry's a lot, but as far as act actually stepping inside a bar and drinking? Yeah, that's it."

It wasn't so much that Sam was being actively stubborn about Josh's new found desire to be called 'Jay', a lifetime's habit was just hard to break. Though...it might've been just a little bit of stubborn thrown in. A very little bit.

"Just opened up a month or two ago, I think," he supplied, just ahead of pointing out their next turn well in advance. "After this left it's a good ten miles of winding afore the next turn," he told Pete before getting back to the subject of the new bar, and bars in general.

"I ain't sure I've been to a whole lot more'n that," he admitted, brow furrowed slightly as he thought about it. "Harry's is it, for the most part, an' I've been to the bar here in town once," which he was definitely never going to do again. "An' that club a couple years back in the City," which had been so far out of his comfort zone it was almost painful. "...that might be it."

Paige sat back in the seat, nodding in agreement when Sam mentioned the date it had opened. "Yeah, from what Josh was sayin', it's only actually existed for a short while. Wasn't shut down for a rodent problem or anything like that."

"I been to a couple of places in the city," she shrugged. It wasn't a big deal. She wasn't exactly the party animal of her apartment, but she'd been dragged along to places before, even though she'd never left a bar drunk. Leaning up a little bit, she put a reassuring hand on her brother's shoulder. "Don't worry, Sammy, I was good. Not really a big party person."

Sitting back again, she looked up at Pete's reflection in the rear-view mirror and made a not at all subtle gesture of throwing back invisible drinks and swaying drunkenly.

"Gotcha." Pete nodded, taking the left and making his way in the direction he'd been dictated to go in. Travel was so much easier when other people knew where they were going. He also had the added benefit of having two of them, so even if they both decided to have a little too much to drink, between the pair they could probably get him back to the house just fine at the end of the evening. Maybe. Hopefully.

"I...actually don't go into the city as often as I probably should, considering how close we live to it." He sounded thoughtful at that, and a little disappointed. He had a car, a bunch of friends he could drag along with him, why didn't he get out more often? Catching Paige in the rear view mirror again, he widely grinned, trying not to laugh to draw too much attention to it. Sam didn't need to know how far out of the loop he was. "Well, we'll have to remedy that a little."

Of course she had. Sam rolled his eyes, but he was pretty much resigned to it. The only question was if she had a fake id, or if she went to places with her college friends that didn't card hot girls. He wasn't entirely sure which made him more uncomfortable. Didn't much matter now, though, seeing as how she was legal and all.

"Just make sure you don't ever lose track'a your drink," he issued the obligatory brotherly warning. Okay, the obligatory over-protective brotherly warning. "An' I don't think we need t'remedy it all that much," he added, shifting his attention to Pete with a grin. "Don't expect Momma'd think too highly of any of us if we bring her back plastered, even if she is legal now."

"And how you know people who live there," Paige added to Pete's statement. "Jubes and I have a perfectly good couch." There was really no excuse for either of the boys not coming to stay with them in the city from time to time.

"Yes, Sam," she intoned, smiling as she rolled her eyes. She laughed as Sam pointed out just how upset their Momma would be if she did return from the trip completely wasted. Amusing as the image was in her head, it was actually pretty terrifying. She knew for a fact that her mother wouldn't have any problem reprimanding all three of them loudly in front of her siblings. "I'm gonna just remind the both of you right now that I'm a grown woman and am completely capable of knowing when to say when."

"'Specially when there's the threat of Momma crackin' down on us after," she added, smiling.

"Well, if push comes to shove, we just toss her into a snowbank until she sobers up. The benefits of having a birthday in the winter, wouldn't you say Paige?" He glanced in the mirror again, wagging his eyebrows at his mock threat, though in reality he had absolutely no qualms with going through with it. Snowbank were soft enough, and he could be careful.

"If she wants pointers as the night goes on she can ask, but I'm sure she's capable of handling herself." With company, he mentally added. "All in all, I agree that we shouldn't make your mother mad. I don't think I get immunity as a guest when I'm supposed to be the old, responsible one."

Sam snorted in amusement at the image of wasted Paige trying to stagger her way out of a snowbank. Not that he figured it would come to that, but it was still funny. "No one wants to make Momma mad," he agreed, before pausing to direct Pete to their last turn, just around an unlit corner in the pitch black.

"We'll be heading into town soon," he assured him, grinning. "There's even a few street lights an' a whole handfull'a stop lights." Not that they could see any of that yet, for the folds in the hills and the curves in the road. It'd be coming up soon, though. "Welcome to the sticks."

"Y'all throw me in a snowbank, you'd best be having Sammy fly you away real fast because otherwise you're both going down." There was no way in hell she'd be able to actually take the two of them down, sober or drunk, but it was a fun threat anyway.

"I remember when we got the one light," she nodded, voice briefly taking on an exaggerated air of reverence. "It was a big deal. That's excitement here. Stop lights. All fancy with their three different colors. There was a good month after that where Daddy would just point it out every time we drove by."

"You guys didn't have stop lights before?" Pete sounded amazed by that, though he'd grown up in a pretty rural area as well. He didn't even know if what was left of the farming collective still existed, let alone had any more advanced technology.

Pete followed the directions, drove a little more, and finally pulled into the parking lot of the bar they were going to be hanging out in. Shutting the engine, he peered through the windshield at the various fluorescent beer and booze signs in the windows, always the biggest indicator that it sure was a bar.

"I think I might leave my coat in here. I know it's cold out, but it's only about twenty feet to the bar, and I have a habit of forgetting things when I'm distracted by people. If you guys are half as fun as I think you'll be that's probably going to be a good plan."

Sam just laughed at Pete's surprise. In his experience a lot of people just didn't have a clue how different things could be when you got back into the hills and away from the urban centers. He held his peace, though, watching the road until they were safely parked.

"Oh yeah, we're more fun than a barrel full'a monkeys," he assured Pete, tugging his own coat tighter shut as he pushed his door open on the cold. "We'll tag team you at pool an' wipe the table with you." He grinned.

"Remember how Sam welcomed you to the sticks?" She spread her arms, even though Pete probably couldn't fully see and appreciate the gesture. "Really. Welcome."

When the got to the bar, Paige slid toward the door, giving the other cars in the lot a once-over. Odds of her actually recognizing any of them were slim to none, but it was worth a shot anyway. "I feel like a barrel of monkeys wouldn't be all that much fun."

She popped the door open and hopped out, checking her pocket to make sure she'd actually remembered to bring her ID. "They got pool tables here? Maybe we could make some money while we're out."

"You probably will," Pete laughed, sliding out of the driver's seat and tugging his coat off, leaving it on the seat behind him as he locked up. "I'm notoriously awful at pool."

He regretted leaving the extra layers behind almost immediately, the cold chilling his arms. He shoved his hands into his pockets in an attempt to keep them warm for the short walk to the door, his broad shoulders scrunching up as he moved. "It's a barrel of monkeys, how could it not be fun?" He pulled his own wallet out of the back of his pocket to make sure he had his driver's license on hand. "You guys really want to spend the night hustling pool? Like I said, I'm not that good."

"What he said," Sam agreed, breath coming out in a frosty cloud in the cold night air. He didn't bother checking for his own ID. Not just because he knew he had it, but because he hadn't been carded anywhere since he was seventeen years old and had topped up over six feet.

"Paige, think where we are. Everyplace has pool tables. But I guess we can skip embarrassin' you at pool," he conceded to Pete as he pulled the door to the bar open. A wash of warm air, loud voices, and louder music met them as a wedge of light cut into the darkness around them. "After you, birthday girl." He grinned at Paige and gestured her through.

"Because monkeys smell," she answered simply. She smiled as Pete jammed his hands in his pockets, and moved up to elbow him in the arm as they walked. "Should've brought a coat, big guy."

The warm air from inside the bar hit her and she smiled up at Sam, giving him a thankful nod and heading on into the bar. She was disappointed that they didn't seem to have a bouncer stationed right at the door, but given the fact that it was the kind of place where most everyone knew each other anyway, it wasn't that big of a surprise. Unzipping her coat, she glanced up at her companions. "So... y'all are paying for me all night, right? That's how this works?"

"Lots of things that smell are fun." Pete retorted almost childishly as he stepped inside after Paige, leaning a hand back against the door so Sam could come in after them without it starting to close on him. "Like......um....." He couldn't think of anything right off the bat, but that didn't mean there weren't any. He could come up with a few later, when he was sitting, and warm, and had a couple drinks in him.

He held his hands out to take Paige's coat for her, as any gentleman would. Mama Rasputin would be proud. "That was the plan. At least, that was my plan."

"Like I wouldn't prob'ly end up doin' that anyway," he teased Paige, tugging gently at her hair as Pete took her coat all gentleman-like.

The place was about what Josh had described. New, clean, brightly lit, with pop music more like what you might hear in any bar in the city than most of the watering holes in the hills. It wasn't exactly crowded, but there were more than a few people propping up the bar and out on the dance floor, and another, smaller, crowd gathered around the pool tables in the back.

"First good sign, no sawdust on the floor," Sam teased before turning towards the bar, which looked like it actually had an assortment of hard liquor beyond the standard whiskey, vodka and tequila that was all many of the local places stocked. "So what d'you want to start with?"

"Thank you for continuing to live up to my mother's expectations." She smiled and handed her coat to Pete, then swatted at Sam's hand and turned to him. "You keep tuggin' on me, somethin's gonna fall off and what's underneath ain't gonna be pretty."

It probably wasn't a real threat, but it was something that could maybe work to get him to cut it out. Maybe.

"I dunno. I'm new at this," she nodded, smiling as she put on as innocent a face as she could muster. "Ain't sure I'd even know what any of those fancy drinks are called."

Pete, for his part, was slightly disappointed at how new and clean the place looked. He was expecting something gritty and dank, like the old bars he'd seen in the movies, with the flickering jukebox, and the dangling overhead lights that reminded him of the old cop shows when they were interrogating witnesses. Once again, he decided that he needed to stop watching so much television, and probably should also stop assuming that bars in the South were a lot like the movie Roadhouse.

He was surprised to find that there was an official little coat cubby near the doorway, and hung Paige's coat up easily. "When uncertain, order the vodka." The last word game with a wag of eyebrows and his thick natural accent, a grin forming. "Or if you want to start out with something that goes down easier you could do that too. Mud slides are pretty good. More sweet, less burning."

"That threat would'a worked better when you were twelve, Pipsqueak," he assured Paige as followed Pete over to the coat cubby and abandoned his own, gloves stuffed into one pocket.

"Don't you mean when looking to get plastered, order the vodka?" he clarified, grinning as Pete's accent went thick and broad over the short word. "Not that I'm any kinda expert," he admitted. He'd been talked into branching out from beer or whiskey once or twice, but he was pretty much a creature of habit. "Think mud slides were actually pretty good though," he added after a moment's thought.

Paige turned to smile at Sam, innocent look still on her face as he and Pete hung up the coats.

She laughed when Pete's accent changed on the word vodka, and she nodded at Sammy's response. "Yeah. Let's save the straight liquor for later. Like when I'm already too drunk to feel it burning."

"Mud slide works." She took a look around, surveying the seating options. "Barstools or table?"
