I posted this a week or so ago and just realized that I posted it to my journal instead of no7_awz. Apologies to anyone who gets this twice. At least this time I think I've figured out how to get the cut/link thing to work.

Sh*t happens and then you step in it”

Deniz stared at the bundle of fur lying on his couch and wondered just what he might be letting himself in for.

Growing up, his Aunt Sophie always referred to a dog as a “canine companion”. She made all dogs seem as boring and sedentary as her stout and grumpy bulldog that waddled around demanding food or stretched out in the middle of the floor dead asleep, a living trip line for the unwary.

This animal next to him was definitely not, he thought, a “canine companion”. This was a dog; a big, lean teenager of a dog with bright eyes and floppy ears and an enthusiasm for life rarely seen in people.

Deniz had thought nothing of stopping for a few minutes to help catch a dog that was running loose far too close to traffic. It was just a dog that had been dumped by its owners or had run off but he couldn’t stand the thought of it getting hit by a car. Several hours later, when he had finally won the animal’s trust enough to be able to pick him up, something had changed. This wasn’t just *a* dog anymore, it felt like it was *his* dog. Scared and confused but liking people and trusting him just the same, this animal had somehow wormed its way into his heart and he was reluctant to part with it.

Two brown eyes regarded him warily but hopefully from the other end of the sofa and he knew he was lost. So when Roman came home that night, Deniz couldn’t help but say “Guess what, we’ve got a dog.”
